Networker's Maxim: Remember the Work

Scott Morgan staff writer for U.S. 1 interviewed Adam J. Kovitz for the November 7th edition.

Here' s a reprint of the article...

Networker's Maxim: Remember the Work

Adam Kovitz, by anyone's definition, is a smart man - an actual rocket scientist-turned-networking guru who almost single-handedly has accepted the responsibility of dragging some very tired old networking cliches into the 21st century. Simply "working the room" and collecting business cards and seeing old friends at the chamber of commerce meeting is no longer good enough. Networking today requires an investment.

The currency? Relationships.

"People aren't irrelevant," the 38-year-old Kovitz says from his suburban Philadelphia office. "Everything we want to achieve in this world has to be based on relationships to other people."

Those relationships, in turn, become what Kovitz refers to as "a constantly evolving portfolio of assets;" a living, breathing network of mutually beneficial relationships that, regardless of your business, make up what Kovitz considers the most important single measure of success - relationship capital.

"Financial capital is merely a reflection of relationship capital," he says. "You can't measure wealth without measuring relationships." He will describe ways to accumulate such a portfolio of business assets at a breakfast seminar entitled "Networking to Grow Your Business" for the Princeton Regional Chamber on Wednesday, November 14, at 7:30 a.m. at the Nassau Club, 6 Mercer Street. Cost: $30. Call 609-924-1776 (www.princetonchamber.org).

Another networking seminar in this time period will be on Monday, November 12, at 6 p.m. at Raritan Valley Community College's College Center in North Branch. Giulio Padovani will speak on "Networking Success." The event is free by registration. Call 908-526-1200, ext. 8934.

At his seminar Kovitz will delve less into the airy concepts of human relationships and more into the nuts and bolts of effective networking. For example:

Building a networking inventory, through which you know who your strongest assets are.

Ranking business relationships to find who are the most and least beneficial - and then finding ways to strengthen the weak spots.

Recognizing the tit for tat factor. Productive business relationships go both ways. If you can help someone else, that person can help you. This can be as simple as asking yourself, "Do I have a business that complements another?" A contractor who knows a real estate agent is in a good position to build a lasting relationship.

"It takes a certain psychology," Kovitz says, "certain `soft skills.' Most people would rather socialize, but they have to learn to use each other (as assets) to do business."

This, of course, takes work, and Kovitz makes no attempt to hide the second half of word "networking." Citing an increasingly popular refrain within the networking industry, Kovitz says, "It's not net-sitting; it's not net-eating. It's net-working."

And networking, he says, should not be viewed as yet another thing to take care of, but as an essential - indeed, the most essential - aspect of a business' operation.

"Networking is the way you build your business," he says, relating it to someone starting a new job. On the first day of work, he says, a new employee needs to know who to turn to in any situation - who is giving the work, who will be receiving the work and who takes care of trouble when it brews.

"That's all a network," he says. "It's working to figure all that out."

Kovitz's perspectives (and his growing success in the networking industry) are a combination of experience, hard work, book smarts, and heredity. After graduating from Penn State University with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1992, Kovitz, quite literally, shot for the stars. Working in jet propulsion and rocket science for General Electric in his hometown of East Windsor and for the U.S. Navy, Kovitz says he quickly developed a sense of how large organizations - like rockets - are comprised of very small parts.

Frivolous Facebook Fridays?

By Paul Barsch

Marketing Profs Daily Fix

T
he use of social networking tools hasn’t exactly taken off in the workplace as many employers are banning the use of Facebook, MySpace and other online communities as a time waster. However, one company is aggressively asking employees to use Facebook to build relationships with each other and customers. Will it work?

Recently, Business Week had a brief article titled, “Now Social Networking Fridays” that described one company’s attempt at using social networking tools to improve recruiting, networking and even employee morale. The company in question, Serena Software, has launched “Facebook Fridays” where employees are asked to spend one hour each Friday to “update their profiles, collaborate with colleagues and clients, and recruit for Serena.”

In other words, can users present a professional and polished image and still maintain a casual, friendly social network. The verdict is still out on this question, but so far Kickstart at least looks like it strikes a fair balance ...

Father of web 2.0 slams Google OpenSocial

Lack of data sharing means platform misses the mark

Tom Sanders in California, vnunet.com 08 Nov 2007

Tim O'Reilly, the father of the term 'web 2.0', has denounced Google's OpenSocial as "boring" and a "full blown disappointment".

OpenSocial offers a standard for applications on social networks that allow developers to market applications on any network supporting the standard. Early supporters include Plaxo, LinkedIn, MySpace and Google's Orkut.

The standard does not unlock data from the participating network, however, which might have allowed a MySpace user to exchange messages with a LinkedIn user, for example.

The service also will not allow the use of social search engines that let users locate friends across all networks.

Strategy: What Say You?

By Jay Deragon, Contributing Writer; Jay's Bio Email article to a friend

Think young, act BIG.

News Corp. Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch made a statement during the company’s annual meeting last week where he said: “We’re only at the beginning of two of the most profound social and economic trends of our age–globalization and digitalization,” rattling off a few of the company’s milestones of the past year.

Besides Fox Interactive and all the other News Corp properties, much of Murdoch’s emphasis was on the success of MySpace and the fact that it turned profitable within the past year. Murdoch’s often refers to the success of news Corp being centered around creativity aimed at the globalization and digitalization in the new economy. News Corp has been known and for “breaking away from the traditional and creating the new”.

Strategy Eleven: Moving into Legendary Status:
Going from the Ordinary to the Extraordinary

“Go beyond the ordinary and create the extraordinary” – Ron Sukenick

I had the chance a few years back to host a radio talk show. It was a weekly Saturday morning get together of people who would interact with the audience sharing ideas, information and other resources.

The topics focused on building business strategies to use to create the level of success for which we are looking.

About a year and a half into the show, I realized that the demands were getting greater and that people’s expectations were becoming unfulfilled.

An accomplished entrepreneur who’s sold more than one company he’s built from scratch for a few good coins, I spoke with him during a recent meeting of Duct Tape Marketing Authorized Coaches in Kansas City. I asked him to talk with me on the topic of how he builds relationships that build his business. What I got from talking with Matthew was quite revealing . . . and valuable. Enjoy!

Annual Conference of Council of Multiple Listing Service

By Scott R. Forcino P.C., Attorney at Law, Real Estate Editor Email article RSS feed

This month I attended an event in Seattle, Washington. It was an annual conference hosted by the Council of Multiple Listing Service. Speakers included highly recognized local and national professionals who address current real estate industry topics, including technology and legal updates. Some of these speakers were professors and some were attorneys in private practice or in the employ of the Federal Government. Also present was a tradeshow of thirty-five (35) MLS-related vendors.

Over ninety (90) association-executives/board officers came to the conference. They represented over 35 states and Canada. They dined over breakfast, lunch and dinner (realtors love to eat), attended workshops/educational seminars for most of the two (2) days. During breaks, these officers met the vendors who exhibited in the main lobby. This represented a great opportunity to learn more about the vendors’ offerings and services. Contracts were signed and follow-up dates were scheduled. These vendors all served the real estate industry and were technology-centric.

The Impact of Publications on Networking (Part 1)

By Matthew Best, Political Editor Matthew's Bio Email article to a friend

Here are a few questions for you – how do publications affect networking? Do networks affect publications? Which came first the publication or the network?

These are questions you probably hadn’t thought of, but are certainly interesting to ponder. I decided to tackle those very questions by looking at the world of political publications. I interviewed individuals from a traditional print publication and from an online publication. Also, to make this a balanced look, I interviewed individuals from both the left and right side of the political spectrum to see what their thoughts were. I think you’ll find the answers interesting.

Finding Target Companies to Network Into

By Jason Alba, Career Transition Editor Jason's Bio Email article RSS feed

I recently got an e-mail from Devin Thorpe of MidMarketMaven, who said "This list includes over 100 great companies for finding jobs." It had an attachment with the 100 companies that received awards and recognitions for fast-growing local companies from the Mountain West Capital Network (MWCN).

I would have loved to have a list like this handed to me with my last paycheck! Remember, when I got let go I was fairly new to the state, and didn’t know what companies I should approach. I would drive down the highway and list the companies that had signs, but there had to be thousands of companies that I would miss, right?

If the glove doesn’t fit...

By Danielle Lum, Hawaii Bureau Chief Danielle's Bio Email article RSS feed

I recently took the big step of quitting my 9-5 job and becoming my boss. After having a guaranteed paycheck for two decades, I now would have to hustle, find clients, and fulfill contracts to get paid. It was spooky to say the least.

One thing I had on my side was a great network of people who knew what I could do and were willing to be my first clients. Whew. But I knew that I had to find more clients and the way to do it was by building and expanding my network.

I had always stayed away from networking events in the past. I’m shy and reserved by nature, so while I was okay in small group situations, large gatherings always left me tongue tied and standing in a corner. Seriously, a root canal was preferable to being in a large group of people. But now my very livelihood depended on me getting out, meeting people, and selling myself.

China’s economy is unquestionably booming and it is near impossible to spend a week not being the recipient of a product that has not come out of China. I decided to take a road trip from Hong Kong to Guangzhou to visit the 102nd China Import and Export Fair to see just how China does business.

The first thing about travel in to China for business is it pays to have a local contact someone who can speak the languages, I say languages because Chinese generally speak either Cantonese (in the south) or Mandarin (in the north).

The Laws of Relationship Capital, Part 2: The Second Law

By Adam J. Kovitz, CEO, Editor-in-Chief Adam's Bio Email article RSS feed

A few months ago, I introduced TNNW readers to the concept of Relationship Capital in my article Can Relationship Capital Solve the World’s Problems? Last month, I introduced the First Law of Relationship Capital:

All organic entities (living or at one time having lived) possess and have the potential to create Relationship Capital

Like I’ve stated previously, "It is my hope through this series of articles to encourage discussion and debate amongst business leaders, academia, thought leaders and the socially and environmentally conscious who wish to benefit from networking. It is also my intention to discuss this at the "flying at 80,000 feet" as there is much more to each law than presented here."

The Second Law

The First Law deals with organisms that follow biological taxonomy, but what about non-organic things? Don’t we have relationships with cars, works of art and computers? The answer is undoubtedly "yes", but how does Relationship Capital work with non-organics? This is where the Second Law comes in:

Non-organic entities do not possess Relationship Capital, but reflect the collective Relationship Capital of those Relationship Capital-possessing entities who have relationships with them.
