How the networking revolution has redefined our language

Networking has taken a big leap over the past several years and has become more commonplace within our lives, with a vast plethora of social media tools available to us - many of them free.  In the wake of this revolution, media giants have risen and fallen, along with some governments as well, and an entire generation has grown up in an era like no other.


It's no wonder then that recently the 12th Edition of the Oxford Concise Dictionary was released (commemorating its 100 years of linguistic existence) and 400 new words were introduced.


Among the new words, are several that are a direct result of the networking revolution, for better or worse - take a look:


cyberbullying: n. the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature.
retweet: v. (on the social networking service Twitter) repost or forward (a message posted by another user). n. a reposted or forwarded message on Twitter.
sexting: n. informal the sending of sexually explicit photographs or messages via mobile phone.
textspeak: n. language regarded as characteristic of text messages, consisting of abbreviations, acronyms, initials, emoticons, etc..
woot: exclam. informal (especially in electronic communication) used to express elation, enthusiasm, or triumph.


These words join previous new entries "LOL" and "OMG" (added in February, 2011) that indicate a highly-connected, high-speed world filled with 140-character info blasts to our friends, customers, clients, connections, etc.


So for those of you networking lingui-files out there who obsess over games like Scrabble and Boggle, you have some neat new words to add to your repertoire, backed by the one hundred-year, rock-solid reputation of the Oxford English Dictionary.  


Yet one more way to appreciate the world of networking - viva la revolution!

Your Attention Please | THE SLOGANATOR

Have you ever felt that your message fell on deaf ears? You send an email, leave a voice mail, text someone or even have a face to face conversation and you feel like there is no one listening? It happens more often than we would like to admit because we live in a world of constant distraction and it is hard to stand out from the crowd.

How do you know if your message is being heard? Here are a few ways to keep you messages to a minimum and still get the attention of the person you want to reach:

• Emails: Keep them short and sweet – when sending an email message, make sure the subject line is direct, to the point and attention getting enough for your email to be read. Then keep your message brief, interesting and NOT a sales pitch. Put yourself in the position of the reader of the message and ask yourself if you would find it interesting enough to read. Guy Kawasaki, in his book Enchantment, suggests that we keep our emails to no more than 6 sentences. I have also heard of people who try to keep it so the whole email can be read in the window of a blackberry without having to scroll. Good advice.

• Voicemails: Keep your voicemail to no more than 15 to 30 seconds and speak clearly. Make your message compelling enough so that your call will be returned. Keep your voice upbeat, be specific and make sure to leave your phone number so your call can be returned.

• Text messages: Short and sweet is the secret. Use them with those that you know are texters and be sure to get to the point fast. Watch out for typos and put yourself in the position of the person receiving the text – would your text be welcomed or deleted?

• Live conversation: Watch for body language, wandering eyes and fidgeting. Keep your conversations lively, interactive and make them dialogues, not monologues. If you feel you are not being heard, you probably aren’t. Be aware of personal space and watch your topics. Remember that you rarely get a second chance to make a good first impression so make your conversation count.

In the world of social media, smart phones, emails and more, it is hard to really get someone’s attention. If you have something to say that you want heard, remember that less is more and creativity counts. Next time you leave someone a voice mail message or even create your outgoing message, keep it short and sweet. Treat other’s people’s time like the valuable resource it is and you will be heard. Warning! Co-Creation Hazard Ahead | CEO SPACE


Brainstorming and collaborating frequently produces superior work. For that reason, it is not surprising that many creative works, in the art and literature world, as well as in the business world, are the result of co-creation. Unfortunately, it is common for disputes to arise over co-created materials. That is not to say you shouldn't collaborate. It is, however, essential that the collaborators agree upon the terms of the arrangement.

Whether you have a business partner, a co-inventor on a new product, or a co-author on a book, blog, or other writing, you should take some simple steps to avoid future disagreements over ownership. As human beings, we typically perceive our contribution to a project as being the most valuable. The financier always believes the key to the company's success is the financial capital, the visionary always believes it is the ideas and the person rolling up their sleeves to do the work believes that success is the result of hard work. Of course, a more objective observer knows that all of those were the ingredients of success.

The laws governing intellectual property do dictate the rights owned by co-authors and co-inventors, but those laws do not necessarily match the intentions of the parties. If two authors work together to author a book, they become joint owners in the copyright to the book. Unless the writing was separated in some easily discernible way, both authors own 50 percent of the work and each have all of the rights that a single author would have. For example, if both authors contributed to every chapter and worked together to decide on wording, there is no way to differentiate between their work and therefore no method to divide the copyright. On the other hand, if each author wrote certain chapters of the book and those chapters could be separated without destroying the work, then there might be a way to divide the copyright. Typically, that is not the case. The applicable federal law states that "a 'joint work' is a work prepared by two or more authors with the intention that their contributions be merged into inseparable or interdependent parts of a unitary whole."

Similarly, joint inventors on a patent each have all of the rights of an inventor. There is usually no easy or accurate way to separate out the contribution of each inventor to the invention.

Co-authorship and co-inventorship can be problematic because both creators have the right to commercialize and monetize the product and can easily and frequently do, interfere with one another's efforts if there is a lack of cooperation.

When co-authorship is contemplated, my recommendation to my clients is that they enter into a written assignment of the copyright to avoid joint ownership of the copyright. One of the authors can assign their rights to the other author in exchange for compensation, recognition, and other negotiated terms. If the co-authors cannot agree on one owner, they can both assign the copyright to a company in which they both have an ownership interest. The company, such as a limited liability company, should be governed by a written agreement between the owners. That agreement should include the rights and obligations of the respective members, how to deal with contingencies such as the death of one of the owners, buyout provisions by one owner of the other's interest as well as other operational matters.

When a creation is only owned by only one person or one entity, there is a clearer direction for commercialization of the work and there are far fewer disputes over the respective rights and obligations of the parties. The next time you are collaborating on a project that involves intellectual property, make sure you discuss ownership of the resulting product and consider consulting an intellectual property attorney to assist you in memorializing your agreements and assigning the ownership to a single person or entity. The cost of this preventative step will be a fraction of the cost of resolving a dispute later.

Are You Listening??? | BNI

Regardless of which marketing/sales vehicle you use, you have a problem. You might be doing print ads or direct mail or email or presenting to a BNI chapter…doesn’t matter. The problem that you have in the year 2011 is that people generally are not LISTENING. Yup, as Seth Godin suggests, you are being ignored. Depending on which expert you listen to, an estimated 3000 to 3500 marketing messages vie for people’s attention daily. How do they cope with that? They tune it out, of course.

This is fine if you are the consumer, but what if you are the business owner trying desperately to get your message to the right audience about the great product or service you have? Is your effort hopeless?

What if I told you I had a solution to the’ tuning out’ problem? What if there was one simple thing you could do, no matter what vehicle you used to send the message that would increase the number of people who actually read or listened to it? Would you be interested in that solution?

Actually the solution was in what I just did to get you to read this paragraph. In a word- ‘curiosity’. Building curiosity in the people you are ‘talking’ to is probably one of the best ways to get them to pay attention. If a question is intriguing to the listener, they will hang on your every word. A person may or may not buy or refer after hearing your message, but we know for sure that they cannot make that decision until they first GET the message.

A good writer understands this and hiring an expert copy writer for a big marketing project is usually a good idea. But there will be situations where that is not possible and it is up to you to become better at it. I find that I can learn a lot from the stories in newspapers. Recently I picked up my local paper, THE VALLEY BREEZE. Publisher Tom Ward writes an editorial in each issue of this weekly paper and his headline in this issue asked: “Are our freedoms nearing ‘extinction’?” (Valley Breeze, Editorial Section, June 30, 2011). The question drew me in. Will the changes the country is going through affect our freedoms? A good question, so I read on. The next part of the article was a wonderful quote by Ronald Reagan:

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.” -Ronald Reagan, 40th president of the United States

The rest of the article was well-written and thought-provoking. You may have even noticed that I tried to use a similar format in this article. The point here is that you can take a lesson from the article you liked when writing or speaking for your business. You might start by asking that intriguing question. The very best question is the one that is actually already being asked inside the mind of the listener. If the medium is appropriate, you might consider adding a quote to give more insight as to where your message is heading. The quote, especially from a known person or expert, also adds a bit of credibility to the piece (especially if you are not a known expert yourself).

Lastly, remember that your message should be relevant to NOW…why did you choose that message to be delivered now? In Tom Ward’s case, he wrote the article in Fourth of July issue of his newspaper. That is what I call ‘public timing’. In other words, the birthday of our country is being celebrated so the country (and what we stand for) is automatically on the minds of many of his readers. When he asks about freedoms in our country, well that type of question may resonate. This stuff happens in marketing and advertising all the time. Since I am writing this at the end of July, you can bet that in a month or so we will be seeing those ‘back to school’ themes all over the place. And the reason of course, is that it works. Timing, as they say, is ‘everything’! So here are three things you can use to make sure your message is heard:
  1. Build curiosity- the best question to ask is the one already in the mind of your audience.
  2. Build credibility- if someone of note has a statement or fact that backs you up, use it.
  3. Base your message on current events -or the time of the year to make it relevant and already in the ‘public consciousness’.
Remember, it is your job to entice people to REALLY listen. Most marketing messages fall on deaf ears because they are boring. Eradicate boring and watch your business grow!
