POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Power of Compassion, Part 4

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Problem Solving with Compassion

Many times, you see a logical solution to a problem that's begging you to implement it. When everyone in the organization drags their feet and are reluctant to progress, it's time to study the implications for all stakeholders. Be aware of dismissing one or more constituencies. That only slows down the process. Instead have compassion and use workshops, trade shows, and professional meetings as opportunities to grapple with important professional issues. For more powerful impact, use logic and compassion to make better decisions and take action to resolve problems.

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Power of Compassion, Part 3

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Powerfully Compassionate

It is equally important to work on projects about which you are passionate in areas of your greatest competence. Serve on special committees, task forces, and interest groups which capitalize on both. Network contacts then become familiar with you at your best. Work done expeditiously and well is always noteworthy. Exposure showcases talent and gives people an opportunity to consider how your compassion might benefit them and their projects. Begin to work more powerfully through networks.

Creative Compassion
Working through networks to solve problems and address issues of people and organizations about whom you care deeply, unleashes creative energy. Civic groups, advisory boards and social clubs often spearhead works to address sticky community issues. Attempts to solve complex problems may yield simple and elegant solutions and projected costly interventions may be resolved efficiently and frugally when you think outside of the box and consider answers from unexpected people in your network.

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Wise Dominion, Part 1

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Vision, Values and Principles
Networks, a precious commodity governed by the beliefs, values, and principles held dear. In this year of transition, take time to do a values check. Core values of adults rarely change, however, the priorities among them shift with short-term goals and unexpected circumstances. Name and define the top three goals for your networks. Prioritize them for 2010. How might these translate into principles that guide operations and strategies specific to creating what you want in 2010?

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Blueprint for 2010, Part 4

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Blueprint Flexibility

How does the design for your network antahkarana appear in your mind? Is there a point of equilibrium and stability? Do you envision this network evolving steadily and continuously? Perhaps your antahkarana is revolutionary, periodically shaking things up into re-configurations? The most powerful antahkarana will probably contain elements of each of these in specific network configurations. For example, the foundation may be stable, the boundaries evolving and the outputs revolutionary. What will make your network antahkarana the most powerful?

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Blueprint for 2010, Part 2

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Virtual Networks are like Family Blueprints

In your virtual networking, create the powerful family that you would have strengthen, nurture, challenge and discipline you. In the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s, many Baby Boomers were transient, moving multiple times and far away from nuclear families. They would create family wherever they went. In this century, electronics help create virtual families internationally while maintaining close physical contact with families of origin. From wherever you are, family can be created anywhere. That’s power!

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Blueprint for 2010, Part 3

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Systems Blueprints

Systems theory says that organizations influence their environment and vice-versa. As the hub of several intact networks of contacts, you are influenced by each and each is, in turn, influenced by you and the other networks. Have you designed your networks to include polarities, exploring extremes; ignoring centers and, perhaps, canceling each other out? Are your networks basically replicas of each other with different content? Do your networks complement each other; building upon one another and causing each other to stretch and grow? Intentionally create powerful networks.

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Holiday Social Networking, Part 4

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Receive Graciously

As much as the end of the year is about giving, it is about receiving -- reaping the fruits of your labor for the year. Always acknowledge and appreciate the gift, as well as the giver of the gift. Politeness is a quality we look for, even in virtual space with all of its short-hand and speed. Be specific in your praise and gratitude – these show sincerity. Receiving graciously also paves the way for greater gifts. How? Receiving graciously completes a cycle which opens the way for a new cycle to begin. Happy New Year!

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Holiday Social Networking, Part 3

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Give the Gift of Generosity

Lending a helping hand on social networks creates new opportunities – for friends, for motivated leads, and for referrals, especially during this very busy holiday season. Solve the “easy” problems, not the complex ones that reveal your corporate secrets. Generosity indicates caring and these small successes pave the way for bigger requests that lead to contracts and larger and more complex projects. Generosity is a powerful catalyst in social networks.

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Holiday Social Networking, Part 2

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Power Networking is Heart to Heart

Do you shy away from sharing personal things on your social networks? Or are you more open on-line than when meeting people face-to-face? Powerful social networks are born of relationships. The trend is for people to want to do business with people that they know. Build friendships by sharing information about you and accepting and reinforcing what others share. Then, share a little more. Give and take has a different rhythm in virtual space; still the rhythm is there and from it, friendships are born.

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Holiday Social Networking, Part 1

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Reach Out to New Target Audiences

The holidays are an opportunity to celebrate and meet new people – virtually. Powerful social networking during the holidays may involve getting to know a new group of people on-line. Use the advance search features of social networking sites to identify new target audiences, those who are not like you, but who need the services that you offer. While you may not discuss your business directly, you can help your new friends solve problems that they share. Start the sharing that builds relationships.

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Using Media to Power Network, Part 1

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Options

We have so many ways to stay in touch these days that it’s helpful to be intentional about our choices. When must we see or talk to people by phone or Skype? When are public pages and chat rooms the most appropriate places to keep in touch? Are there still times when networking is best done face-to-face? Yes, to negotiate intricate contracts and resolve emotionally-charged disputes. In general the more complex the message, the better it is to look the person in the eye to generate win-win solutions.

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Building Powerful Relationships, Part 4

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Showing Appreciation for Favors Received

Find unique ways to express appreciation for a favor received. Occasionally, it means responding in kind. Rarely is an email, twitter or E-card compelling – they’re fast, cheap and easy and take little thought. More often a written note or a singing telegram or a box of golf tees has the potential to surprise and delight one who has gifted you. Personal artistic creations, such as poems or pictures, can be tailored to strike the right chord of gratitude. Be creative!

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Agency and Networks, Part 4

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Emotional Agency and Networks

Networks provide emotional and social support. Emergencies and low periods often trigger the desire to engage with others who have experienced similar situations. Sometimes, a coach or spiritual counselor affirms and guides one through challenging times. New networks develop to help people deal with contemporary issues, i.e., care for aging parents, children dealing with divorce, and post traumatic stress syndrome. The most simple of these share strategies for coping and give emotional support.
