Apocalypse, Later | A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER

Apocalypse, Later

by Adam J. Kovitz

The beloved comic strip character, Charlie Brown, whilst perched atop the pitcher's mound, about to deliver the game's last defining pitch would often contemplate that no matter what happens, he would either be the "hero" or the "goat".  In that brief moment of anticipation prior to the pitch, while his adrenaline was running at the highest, an entire world of possibilities existed.  Then the pitch would come...time, as they say to "put up" or "shut up".  Inevitably, as would always happen for bad-luck Charlie Brown, he would emerge ever the goat.

In business, as in life, many of us entrepreneurs face this every day.  We all end up putting ourselves out there...our hearts, our souls, our energies, our efforts and our reputations.  The prize is always the big payday...we emerge as visionaries, make our fortunes, give back to those that helped us get to where we are, sell our companies, invest in others, live happily ever after...

...or we go down in flames.

High risk...high reward...the nature of the game.

Certainly Family Radio's 89-year old founder, Harold Camping, has been through this now...twice:  once in 1994, and just this past Saturday as he predicted the end of the world (according to his calculations).  Moreover, Mr. Camping has been through this in a very public way.

According to a recent article in CBS News, Mr. Camping, when questioned about his failed prediction, unlike other public personalities used to facing such public scrutiny, had no "spin" or PR to either make it seem like he was misquoted (a recent "just because I said it then and it was erroneous so therefore it shouldn't be counted as fact or taken seriously"-type of excuse comes to mind) or that it was something that he meant to do as a publicity stunt.

He simply seemed humbled and was quoted as being "flabbergasted" and went on to say that "It has been a really tough weekend".  At least it seemed honest to me...a bit refreshing.

And while the weekend might have been tough for him, imagine how it must have felt for the families who believed in his message and left their jobs, sold their homes, bought RVs and traveled across the country to experience an end that never seemed to come.

I think many entrepreneurs who have grown their businesses by sheer faith and belief who've attracted their own followings of believers have experienced this.  We constantly walk the considerably thin line between our dreams of a better world with our products and services within it and the harsh realities of economics, less than stellar employees and competitive forces.

We all want to be the stars of our own movies where we do hit it big - prove to the doubters of the past that it couldn't be done and be hoisted atop the shoulders of adoring fans.

We never want to be the goat.  We never want to be written off as insane and without a clue.  We never want to be the punchline of others derisive jokes.

So Mr. Camping...I certainly did not and do not share your faith, your beliefs or your ideas, but I do salute you in your failure (perhaps it is only temporary?) and in your avid belief that what you were doing was right enough at the time.

In fact as we in the United States near our weekend Memorial Holiday I salute all failures; the misguided ones, the justified ones, the noble ones, the ones that came so very close to being huge successes and all the others out there.  I ask all my fellow entrepreneurs for a moment of silence as we place garlands of flowers on the graves of the millions of ideas that have since passed on in and rest in the the figurative cemetery of business failures worldwide.

For the wise amongst us, let us keep such humbling memories alive as they provide lessons and fertilizer for future successes for we have all played the roles of hero and goat and will continue to do so as long as there's a human race.

To all of our readers in the U.S., have a happy and relaxing Memorial Day.  To all else, enjoy your weekend!

Speaking of taking off, TNNWC's Publishing and Informational Services Division will be taking their customary 5th week of the month off.  This means that The National Networker Weekly Newsletter and The BLUE TUESDAY Report will not be published next week, and will resume in June on the 6th and 7th, respectively.

All my best,

Adam

Rob Brown, British Networking Personality, Joins TNNWC | A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER

Rob Brown, British Networking Personality, Joins TNNWC

by Adam J. Kovitz

Rob Brown knows a thing or two about networking and entrepreneurship, and this week we're delighted to have him join the writing staff at The National Networker Weekly Newsletter (TNNW) this week.  Rob comes from Nottingham, England (home of Robin Hood) and works as a motivational speaker and is the founder of the Global Networking Council.

As announced in last week's edition of TNNW, I was recently interviewed by Mr. Brown on his "Conversations That Count" program in an episode, entitled: "The Theory of Networking with Adam Kovitz", which can be heard in its entirety (approximately 18 minutes) at http://2.tnnw.co/adamandrobbrowntalk.

Speaking of which, Rob's regular monthly column with TNNW is aptly titled Conversations That Count, in which different networking concepts will be spotlighted each month and backed-up with Rob's fantastically-popular interviews with various networking personalities (this month features our aforementioned interview) .

While TNNW has changed over the years and taken on a more broad audience and subject matter that deals with all aspects of entrepreneurship, it's still refreshing for one such as myself to get back to my networking roots.  It is still a necessary skill for entrepreneurs and I am grateful to Mr. Brown for reminding me of that.

All my best,

Adam

DAVE CLARKE: Sticky Marketing

Dave Clarke
by Dave Clarke

A couple of years ago Grant Leboff wrote the best selling business book 'Sales Therapy: Effective Selling for the Small Business Owner'. Grant has now followed that up with a new book, 'Sticky Marketing: Why Everything in Marketing Has Changed and What to do About It'. The new book shot to the No.1 ranking of 'Sales and Marketing' on Amazon.co.uk within 4 days of its January release!

A few weeks ago I chatted with Grant about the new book.

1. Why write this second book, Grant?

"The onset of the Web and new technology has meant that the principles of marketing, which had been the same for nigh on 200 years and had not changed very much since the invention of the T.V, have now been completely turned on their head. There are many people focusing on the new tools e.g. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube etc. and how to get the best out of them. Fundamentally, however, Marketing has moved from being tactical to being strategic. That means to merely look at the tools is not enough. To make marketing work today, one has to really understand the changes in buyer behaviour and the new principles which underpin all successful marketing now. I felt there was a gap in the market for a book like this and it is the area that the book really addresses."

2. What’s the reason for the title, Sticky Marketing?

"Fundamentally, marketing works when it provides value for the prospect. The challenge for business today is that what consumers found valuable 20 years ago is no longer providing the same value. Merely shouting messages at individuals provided some interest in a world where it was relatively difficult to access information. Today, when we have so much information at our disposal, that can be accessed from a device in our pocket, this is no longer the case. Value now has to be more substantial and has to engage a prospect. This is because today all companies are in 'a battle for attention'. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain people's attention and keep it over any length of time. 'Sticky Marketing' was a way of describing this phenomena. Today, we need marketing that provides value, over a long period. Thus, it is engaging prospects and encouraging them to re-engage in the future. In other words it is marketing that sticks, or 'Sticky Marketing'."

3. What's the most important thing you want people to take from reading the book?

"I think there are many fundamentals that people need to grasp in order for their marketing efforts to be successful. However, I would sum up the book in one sentence. In his famous Presidential speech of 1961 JFK said, 'Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for you country'. Borrowing this famous quote, I would say today, 'Don't ask what your marketing can do for you but what it can do for your customer'. If you can get that right, other aspects will start to fall into place."

4. So what next for you, Grant?

"I am very fortunate that life is very exciting right now. We launched a brand new web portal stickymarketing.com in January which, over time, will deliver really useful information, hints and tips for those accessing the site. Sticky Marketing TV goes live, on the site, on Feb 28th this year. We have some incredible guests on the show. Finally, we are launching a Global franchise for the marketing strategy, consultancy and mentoring services that we deliver. Anyone interested can find out more, and contact us, through the website stickymarketing.com."

Until next time...

Good Networking!
