WRITE TO EXCITE!: Developing Your Fictional Characters

Write to Excite! with Peter Biadasz

Being an author is one of the most exciting ways to be an entrepreneur. Let’s continue a discussion for those entrepreneurs who like to specialize in making things up, fiction writers.

In April you were shown how to write fiction immediately (You Can Write Fiction Today! http://thenationalnetworker.blogspot.com/2010/03/write-to-excite-write-fiction-today.html). Lately I have been teaching character development, as well as writing a fiction book, so I thought I would share a few thoughts on how to make the most of those fictional characters you are designing and placing in your stories.

As a quick reminder, there are, in my opinion, three major types of fiction writing:

1 – Writing Fiction Based On A True Story – This is one of the easiest ways to start writing fiction. Simply take a true event in your life which you deem as significant and feel passionate about, write it factually as it occurred and then re-write it in the way you really wanted it to happen or in a fashion that is either more dramatic or more relatable to others.

2 – Writing Fiction That Could Be Real (but isn’t) – This is similar to writing fiction based on a true story, but without starting with a factual frame of reference.

3 – Writing Fantasy Fiction – If you want to create a totally new world here is your chance. By writing fantasy the only rule is that there are no rules. The laws of science, or any other laws for that matter, do not matter because you can create new ones, both scientifically and legally. The challenge in writing fantasy is to be original.

To develop your characters, regardless of the type of fiction you are writing, you must have a clear idea of who they are and how they fit into the geographic locations and time periods in which you are writing about. The WORST way to develop a character is to develop him/her/it as you write the story. The BEST way to develop a character is to make a file on him/her/it from birth to death before you start writing your fiction work. You want to know the character so well you could sit down and have an interview or dinner with them. If your character is very real to you, then you can convey how real the character is to your reader.

Take the time and consider how your character was conceived, born, progressed through early childhood (friends, school, foods, etc), made it through full childhood into the teen years, the struggles (or lack thereof) in the teen years, early adulthood, adulthood, vocations, emotions, family, middle age, old age, death, eulogies, etc. Even if a particular character in your story is only being referenced too in a short part of their life, knowing their full life story will add depth and realness to your character. Plus, by fully developing each of your characters you will find that you have many more options with regard to your story lines(s).

Finally, unless you are writing just for your entertainment, when developing your characters please remember to be sure they are characters your target audience will relate too. After all, your target audience will be the ones spending their money to buy your book, or maybe even seeing the movie based on your book.

You may want to start a file of significant events, and characteristics from those who have crossed your path in the past or other people of note. In my own current fictional book, many of the characters are a combination of traits from several of my family, friends and others. These combinations make for some very interesting and relatable characters.

Feel free to post your comments about character development at the bottom of this article. I hope that as a writer you not only expand the scope of your writing by further developing your characters, but also find more passion in your life as a result of your writings.

WRITE TO EXCITE!: Write About Your Vacation For Fun And Profit

Write to Excite with Peter Biadasz

We all love to take vacations! There exists an amazingly wide variety of vacations choices available. From cruises to faraway lands, from skiing to skydiving, from warm weather to the coldest of cold, it always surprises me as to how two people can have such a different experience going to the same place, sometimes at even the same exact time. Having said that, if you ever want to have some fun writing, write about your vacations.

When writing about your vacations get the reader involved in your adventures as much as possible. Let your readers experience the newness of being in a place for the first time, the emotions you felt, the sounds surrounding you, smells of the air and the tastes of the foods and drinks in your travels. Write in such a way that the reader feels as though they are on the vacation with you, but also want to experience it for themselves someday.

There are three ways you can write about your vacation experiences:

1 – Write About A Past Vacation: This is a great way to develop your writing style. Start by picking your favorite vacation of all time and write about it in a way that not only recalls the reasons why it was such a memorable time, but also in a way that others will enjoy reading about your experiences. Let others that went on those vacations with you read your accounts to let you know if you left out any vital information in your recollections. Also ask them to critique your writing style and be open for any constructive criticism of your work. This will only make you a better writer.

2 – Write About The Vacation You Are Taking Right Now: During your next vacation make extensive notes in every aspect of your trip; from deciding where to go, planning and then the trip itself. You may even want to write about any follow-up or after the trip thoughts. Be sure to not leave out any detail and have a great time.

3 – Write About Your Dream Vacation: If you really want to stretch your horizons write about your dream vacation. This may not only be a great emotional release for you, but might actually give you some ideas and goals for a future trip. Enjoy the experience. Remember, no dream is too big and the budget is limitless.

If you are feeling especially ambitious you may want to be paid to write your travel experiences. There are many opportunities out there and I encourage you to contact your favorite travel agent, chamber of commerce, convention and visitor’s bureau or editor of the publications that you utilize to enhance your travel experiences. These contacts can inform you of the reviews that they rely on the most to ensure that their customers are happiest on their vacations. Contact the editors of these sources to inquire the process to be considered to write for their publication.

If you want to share your experiences for the greater common good for free you may want to start a travel blog. This can be utilized both during and after your travels. In addition, you can invite others to record their travel experiences on your blog.

Feel free to post your vacations stories and experiences at the bottom of this article. I hope that as a writer you not only expand the scope of your writing by performing these exercises, but also find more enjoyment from your vacations.

WRITE TO EXCITE: Can Speakers Write Books?

Write to Excite with Peter Biadasz

(This article is an edited excerpt from my book, Write Your First Book – How To Start, Finish And Publish The Inside Of You).

Public speaking is what launched me into becoming an author. As a result, I have much admiration and respect for those who place themselves in front of groups of people and share substantive information. I enjoy working with speakers, pastors and teachers assisting them in turning their information into books. Your book will assist you in taking your presentations to a higher level of success, add to your credibility, and add to your income via back of the room sales.

After deciding to become a published author and by understanding the process of transforming the massive amount of information that a speaker accumulates over time into a book, you can save yourself from much frustration and save time.

The steps to convert your speech or presentation into a book are:
1. Transform your recorded message to a transcript.
2. Convert your transcript to a book manuscript.
3. Proof and edit your manuscript.
4. Design your book.
5. Publish your book – printing and distribution.
6. Promote your boo.

Each step can be performed by your and your resources, or you can pay a company like Total Publishing for any or all of the process. Either way, your goal is to get your message out to a public waiting to see it.

Let’s look at each step of the process:

1. Transform your recorded message to a transcript.
This involves transcribing the recoded message into a word document. Standard format is letter size, double spaced with 1 inch margins. You will need to decide if one or several of your presentations will give you the size of book you desire. A speaking series makes for an excellent book.

2. Convert your transcript to a book manuscript.
Usually a person with an editorial background can assist you to in taking the many pages of your transcript and format into something that looks like a book.

3. Proof and edit your manuscript
Both you and several sets of trusted eyes should review the work for readability, grammar, spelling punctuation, etc. It helps if someone from your target audience can also review the book. This will let you know if there was a topic either left out or not discussed properly. In addition, it would not hurt to have an industry professional examine your work.

4. Design your book.
I have much information regarding things to consider when designing your book. For the sake of the length of this article, make sure the cover graphic design and interior typeset will appeal to your target audience.

5. Publish your book – printing and distribution.
I could write a long article on this phase of your project. Working with a publisher that cares for you and your book is important. When you have a strong working relationship many other important things seem to fall into place. By remembering that this is a business and communication must be kept open to be effective, you should enjoy a productive relationship with your publisher. After all, we all want to sell more books.

6. Promote your book.
My speech on this topic it titled, "Marketing Your Book For Fun And Profit." Let the world know you now have a book to offer to them. If, in your speaking endeavors, you have gathered a following and are promoting your book, even before it is published, you have positioned yourself for success. Market some during any day ending in “Y” and you will reap the benefits. As I always say in jest, "Remember, writing a book is good, but selling a book is gooder; and yes we do offer editing services."

Having now seen how easy it is to transform your presentations into a book, I challenge you to today take those recordings, notes and files of information and begin, finish and publish what you are most passionate about.

Feel free to post your comments about turning your speeches into published book at the bottom of this article.

WRITE TO EXCITE: Write Fiction Today!

Write to Excite with Peter Biadasz

As President of Total Publishing and Media, I am constantly approached by authors claiming that their book manuscript will be the next New York Times best seller and that their book will land them on one of the coveted spots on Oprah. Because I am an author first, with 15 books to my credit, the advice I usually give to these aspiring writers is to not worry about the best sellers lists or public appearances, but to perfect the craft of writing to express the passion and expertise that lies within them.

As I discuss in Write Your First Book, there are three phases to the successful author experience: writing, publishing and marketing. To reach one’s goals all three phases must be mastered and accomplished in that order. Thus, the mission of this column, “Write To Excite” to explain the first step of the process in becoming a successful author. If you want to discuss the publishing or marketing phases, I would love to talk with you. Feel free to utilize my contact information at the end of this article.

This month we are going to take a look at writing fiction. There are several ways to approach fiction writing. I will discuss just a few.

Writing Fiction Based On A Tue Story
In my opinion, writing fiction based on a true story this is one of the easiest ways to start writing fiction. Simply take a true event in your life which you deem significant and feel passionate about. Write it factually as it occurred and then rewrite it in the way you really wanted it to happen, or in a fashion that is either more dramatic or more relatable to others. You can even rewrite the rewrite several different ways, depending on the target audience you want to reach.

Before you go to bed tonight make a list of events either in your life or that you have been exposed to that you may want to fictionalize. Then pick an event from the list and have fun with the writing process. Let your imagination run wild. No idea is a bad idea. You can always edit later.

Writing Fiction That Could Be Real (but isn’t)
This is similar to writing fiction based on a true story, but starting without a factual frame of reference. After performing the first writing exercise above several times, writing fiction without a factual basis becomes easier. Start with any scenario and just expand it to a logical conclusion. This form of writing allows the world be the way you want it to be.

Writing Fantasy Fiction
If you want to create a totally new world here is your chance. By writing fantasy the only rule is that there are no rules. Actually, the laws of science, or any other laws for that matter, do not matter because you can create new ones, both scientifically and legally. The challenge in writing fantasy is to be original.

I once had a writer come to me with what he thought was a great idea for a fantasy book. He expressed it to me with much passion and in amazing detail. After his presentation he sat in eager anticipation of my opinion. After weighing my words for a few seconds all I could ask was “Doesn’t that sound a lot like Star Wars?” He quickly agreed and I encouraged him to expand the world in which to write fantasy, or try another form of fiction.

Make the decision to write some fiction today. The hurdle I had to overcome in dabbling in the fiction realm is that I even though I publish fiction and non-fiction works, all of the books I had authored were non-fiction. Once I overcame the sense that I was telling a lie when writing fiction, the words flowed very easily.

Feel free to post your comments about writing fiction at the bottom of this article. I hope that as a writer, you not only expand the scope of your writing by performing the exercises mentioned above, but also find more passion in your life as a result of your writings.

ADAM J. KOVITZ: A Note From the Chairman
Can Games Change the World?

“YES, YES, a thousand times YES: games can change the world---for better or for worse. I advocate for the former, naturally. Thanks for a great article.”
Sandy McKee

TERI AULPH: Beyond the Cubicle - Corporate Culture
Dear Boss...

“Well written to make a dramatic impact on what employees value. We can talk all day long about what we think they want...but at the end of the day, they want to be recognized and valued. Very well done! I am using this with my executive team today.”
Jonas Fuller

RICK ITZKOWICH: Being There When It Counts
The Opportunity for Change

“… I would like to point out that one reason the economy and the "gestalt" are so unsettled right now is we are still trying to solve new problems with old mindsets.

Take marketing. Everyone is always trying to sell me stuff I don't want for money I don't have-- and almost NEVER looking to be of service. (Rick excepted.) I am so sick of "marketing" I want to live in a cave. The TV is a lie machine. "Happy cows live in California". "Health care reform is socialism."

Similar lies.

Yes, we need to change. Now how?”

Carroll

“Rick, good article and pretty accurate. I think some people might prefer a "bad" situation rather than an "unknown" situation, so they fight any kind of change or reinvention. I think that's why some bad marriages/relationships continue. Kudos to you and your company for recognizing this and taking steps to change. Hope (and expect) you'll be successful! Take care,”
Barry Slotten
Commercial Realty Advisers

“I totally agree. In the field of healthcare, our attachment to the status quo is literally killing us. The only way we can survive individually and collectively is to be (very) open to change - in our diets, our movement patterns and our reliance (or not) on medications. “
Madsisson

“Great article, Rick. Change is happening at the speed of light. Imagine what I'm dealing with as a web designer! Not only is the technology changing on a daily basis, but the economy has thrown a monkey wrench into the works. Not an easy environment for running a business, especially for a baby boomer. We either go with the flow, or wither on the vine.”
Beth Sobiloff
BNI Assistant Director, SE Mass

“Rick -- Right on!

There is a tendency, bordering on a genetic disposition, to maintain 'status quo'.

Problem is, as you've pointed out, change is so such a constant that if there is a 'status quo', it doesn't last very long.

"Change or Die". A bit blunt but honest comment. Thank you for bringing this up and sharing it here.”

Bill Doerr, CCO
SellMore Marketing

“Thank you for sending me the article and I could not agree more. Change is a constant we either have to be flexible, open minded, adapt, evolve or die. It is like Darwin and the Origin of the Species. “
Patricia Stanley Martinez

“Thank you for sharing Rick

nice insight and very appropriate for the times we are living, no matter our area of expertise!

I have some quotes about change that i want to share with you:

Nothing endures but change.
Heraclitus

We must always change, renew, and rejuvenate ourselves; otherwise we harden.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Heraclitus
Nothing endures but change.

Have a nice and happy day!

Kind Regards”

Adelino Sousa

“Rick thanks for the opportunity to read and respond to your article. I recently saw something that I latched onto. A business coach had it on his website: "Life is change, growth is optional". I wish I could remember the name of the person where I saw it.

I'm in the marketing and business development area of the company I work for. I travel to 15 to 18 conferences and conventions per year. About a six months ago it dawned on me I was being very ineffective with my time But, how do I still maintain a presence if I'm not traveling or put another way, how do I travel and increase my presence.

After considering my options I decided to get into social media. Except I knew nothing about it.So at the young age of 61 I dove in and I'm learning. I have a long way to go, but along the way I mentally took "The Box" that I had used as a frame of reference for everything I do, took it out to the back yard, and imagined blowing it up! No more in the box thinking! No more it has to be the way I think it ought to be!

The trip is unsettling. Trying to get others to buy into the idea is even more unsettling. But in truth, life is change and growth is optional. And many times we don't want to change because we fail to see that on the other side of that change there is real growth. A friend gave me a "saying" that his father used to repeat. Perhaps it's appropriate for this:

The Set Of The Soul

One Ship Sails East
While Another Sails West
On The Self Same Breezes Blow.
It’s The Set Of The Sail
And Not The Gale
That Bids Them Where To Go.
Like The Voyage Of Ships
Is The Journey Of Life
As We Journey Here Below.
It’s The Set Of The Soul
That Determines Our Goal
And Not The Storms Or The Strife

Life will send us trials of the kind we have seen over the last 24 to 30 months in this country. But, I believe that If we set ourselves to grown and to embrace change we can come out on the other side stronger, healthier, better.

Have a great day. Thanks for the article, it was great.”

Rhae Swisher

DR. IVAN MISNER: Network Like a Pro
Referral Marketing: Top Ten Ways Others Can Promote You

“Good article. It's always good to have who or the type of business you're looking for introductions to in mind anytime you're out networking and that could be your answer.”
Melissa Conkling

BRENDA KRUEGER HUFFMAN: The Point
Remember Bush 41’s “Read my lips, no new taxes” fate? Does President Obama?

“Brenda,

I agree with you completely. The amount of waste is enormous. The only thing that MORE will do is the exact same thing that LESS is doing except MORE of it. So when you waste the money you have, getting more money means MORE waste. If on the other hand you save your money, getting more would mean more savings.

There is an organization called CAGW - Citizens Against Government Waste that does a very good job in exposing all the pork and fighting it. I wish there would be more organizations such as that one instead of so many special interests ones. “
Rick Itzkowich

ANDY LOPATA: Connecting is Not Enough
Ten Tips to get your referral message across (Part Two)

"Andy,

As always, you give some very concrete practical pieces of advise that are easy to implement. Thank you.”
Rick Itzkowich

“Along my travels I stumbled on the point that there are two parts to "customer service", the customer and the service. Simple but profound. We're all customers, so it's not a leap to step out of your role and relate to your own, customers. Do it then ask: are you interesting or helpful enough to talk about?

Bill brings up a timely point. Word of mouth marketing is not new and will always be something to "hope for". The difference now is it seems to be the only? effective way to rise above the shouting competitors. To be effective however it requires a strategy and systematic process.

@Rick You mention a very fundamental point. People prefer to do business with others they like and trust. Without that folks might be talking to you, but they're not talking about you. “

Nothrock

“Andy,

Great insights. Thank you.

I especially appreciate your comment in #10 about 'managing the experience' people have of you.

That's so important and so often ignored.

In social psychology there's a concept known as 'Impression Management'. That's where "What you DO speaks so loudly I can't hear what you SAY".

Once again, you've shared some real gems.

Thank you!"
Bill Doerr

BILL DOERR: Sales and Marketing
The Marketing Shift

Bill,

“What resonated most with me is Part1 - Know/Like/Trust. The Referral Institute has the VCP model which stands for Visibility-Credibility-Profitability. Simply stated, people need to know who you are, they need to trust you and only then will they either do business directly from you or refer you business.

Too many people want to go from Visibility to Profitability without passing through Credibility.

Thank you for reinforcing this very powerful concept.”

Rick Itzkowich
Creator of QuoteActions

DICK BROWN: Venture Finance - Reality Versus Rumor
Angel Investors - What They Are, Part I

“Mr. Brown, You mentioned that "Most [wealthy individuals] expect a handsome ROI over a relatively short period of time." What period of time is that? Thank you. “
Beth Barany

Beth,

Relative to your question about the ROI wealthy "angels" would like to realize. The "magic number" so often quoted is "5-10 times the original investment in 3-5 years".

People always think this is outrageously high since no one ever includes "for their real winners." Angels and VC's take high risks and hope that for each 10 investments they'll have 1 or 2 that will perform to this level to cover all companies that never go anywhere and their losers. On average, Angels and VC's see 8% to 30% PA returns depending on a host of variables.

Thanks for your question.

Best!

Dick Brown, President

WRITE TO EXCITE: Write Romance, Or Whatever, Into Your Relationships!

Write to Excite with Peter Biadasz

We started this year by looking into the future and discussed how to write 2010 into reality. (What Do You Want In 2010?). Last month we wrote about what your greatest successes and victories as a networker (Your Networking Success Story) – and thanks for the great feedback. This month we will look at romance or relationships (depending on how you feel about “all that”) and spice it up.

Okay, I am approaching this topic as a male, which means that I may be starting with a handicap. (I can hear my girlfriend laughing now.) But it is what it is!

FICTION – Write an article, poem or book describing your ideal relationship. Describe every aspect of your perfect partner – height, weight, temperament, redeeming qualities, profession, extended family, occupation, income, etc. Also discuss what you do together socially, personally, etc. Go for it! No detail is too small. Tell us how this person makes you feel when you are with him or her, and the loss you experience in their absence. This person is your fantasy come true, at least on paper. Write until you are satisfied, then write some more.

Hopefully, you will find that person in your real life.

As a publisher I know that fiction romance is a huge category of books and articles. What amazed me is that the primary readership is females in bad relationships looking for an escape, or females in no relationship fantasizing about the “other side.” My female friends gave me an earful about this.

NON-FICTION – Is your primary relationship a 10? If it is, I am so happy for you. I want to publish and read your book on the topic. If it not a 10, then one of the best ways to better any relationship is to talk about it with your partner. Before you have “the talk,” write down what you want to say. Not only will writing down what you want to say serve as a great memory jogger when the discussion gets emotional, but by reading it before you say it, you may better understand the reasonableness, or lack thereof, regarding your expectations.

Be as thorough as possible, keeping in mind your target audience, the one you have in your life whom you love and want to build up by presenting your written masterpiece to them. For every negative point, there should be a solution as well as praise. Remember, this is supposed to be a constructive piece that betters your relationship, not a piece to be presented as a break-up.

Or maybe you just don’t share the piece with your partner.

If you are currently not in a relationship, place your ideal relationship expectations on paper in the details described above. Pardon the allegory, but it is much easier to find all the things you are looking for in the grocery store if you have a list. There is nothing worse that cooking a complex dish only to learn that you left a few key ingredients out of the recipe. As you write, enjoy the trip down each aisle of the grocery store of fulfilling relationships.

WRITE TO EXCITE: Your Networking Success Story

Write to Excite with Peter Biadasz

Networking Success Stories
Last month you looked into your future and decided how to write 2010 into reality. This month’s writing endeavor deals with your victories as a networker. Why not write about what your greatest successes have been while networking?

Writing about your journey as a networker can help you accomplish many things. These can include:

1 - A positive reminder of accomplishments that can lift your spirits during those dry times or reinforce your attitude as you go to a new networking meeting,.

2 - Help you appreciate relationships that you fostered as you expand your network,

3 - Act as material if you ever speak on the topic of networking. Remember, the best speakers are the best story-tellers,

4 - Be a source of material for future articles or a book you may want to write. Trust me, even of you do not want to write anything now, you may want to in the future. If someone had told me “way back when” that keeping track of information would result in me writing 15 books and numerous articles I would have laughed very loud. Now I laugh out of appreciation for having documented my life as a networker.

Having said that, here are a few of my networking success stories:

*Real Estate and small appliances – I am blessed to have several great realtors in my network. One day several years ago one of the realtors called, having just sold the home of a couple that would be moving out of the area and did not want to move their washer and dryer. He called me because as a networker I might know someone who may want to buy the appliances. I was able to call another realtor who had just sold a house to a first time homebuyer who did not have a washer/dyer. We had them sold in 20 minutes. Let me just say that when those 2 realtors need my products, they bought from me, no questions asked. I love networking!

*Find a good networking group - Networking is how I found my weekly networking group. When I formally got into the world of sales it was one of my customers that invited me into his networking group. That group started me on the road to teaching and writing about networking. When I moved half way across the country, my new boss asked me join his networking group because he “did not have time” for it. I am grateful for those 2 invites. They changed my professional life in major positive ways.

*Co-conspirators - All of the co-authors of any book I have co-authored have come through networking. When writing on a topic, I have found that by having a complete network, you will have someone who has passion and expertise on almost any relevant topic. How complete is your network?

*And the biggest one of all – The way I “met” Adam Kovitz, publisher of The National Networker, many years ago, was by someone mutual to both of our networks. Even though I have talked to and worked with Adam much for quite awhile, we have yet to be in the same room at the same time to actually meet face to face. Maybe in 2010….

If you would like, share your networking victories with us in the comment area below this article. Bragging is OK if it is for the common good! I look forward to hearing from you.

WRITE TO EXCITE! What Do You Want In 2010?

Write to Excite! with Peter Biadasz

In the past few months we have discussed your talent, your passion, controversy (Male or Female – Which is Superior?, your employment situation (Need A (Better) Job? Write! and closed the year out remembering the best Holiday Season of your life. Let’s now look to the future and how you can write 2010 into reality.

We all have a dream of what we want in the future. Sometimes it’s a car, job, spouse, more money, boat, or vacation, amongst other things. I have always heard that “a goal is nothing more than a dream with a deadline”. Knowing this, why not write down your dreams and see which ones you can make come true in 2010.

There is nothing more fun than WRITING ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT. It is as simple as titling an article – “What I want In 2010”, and writing on the following topics:

•Both the personal and professional sides of life
•Your spiritual life
•Your physical well being
•Your personality and character traits
•Your assets and liabilities (financially, personally and professionally)
•Your contributions to those around you and society in general
•Your income

You can talk about each area as much or as little as you want. When you have finished writing take a look and see if that is really what you want to be and have in 2010 and modify/edit as needed.

I would then share your article with a few trusted souls to assist you in achieving your goals. It would also be wise to review them in April, July and October of 2010 to rejoice in your accomplishments and make sure you are on track to complete the mightier tasks.

If you would like, feel free to comment below on your greatest goals and accomplishments. Finally, let me know what your greatest victory was in 2009.

WRITE TO EXCITE: What Was The Best Holiday Season Of Your Life?

Write to Excite with Peter Biadasz

In the past 4 months we have discussed your talent, your passion, controversy (Male or Female – Which is Superior?) and even your employment situation (Need A (Better) Job? Write!). Now, in December, we take a walk down memory lane to discuss the best Holiday Season you have ever had in your life.

After finding a topic to write about, in this case the best Holiday Season you have ever had in your life, you should decide what type of piece you are writing. Whether it is an article, poem, blog, book, article or screenplay, make a commitment to write the best piece you are capable of producing.

Next, go through your life, year by year, and decide which Holiday season, or seasons, were the most outstanding. Take some time to figure out why they meant so much to you. Remember the emotions you felt during that time. Take note of the sounds of the activities, the smells of those times, and the feel of the weather. Make note of the people involved. You might even remember some people and names you had long forgotten about, or so you thought. This might be a great time to re-connect.

Next write your piece. Don’t just be factual, but share with us the emotions you felt during the best Holiday Season you have ever had in your life. Make the reader laugh with you. Help us taste the food, smell those Holiday smells and put us in the same room with you. If we are outside help us to feel the air temperature and wind. What were the sounds of that special Holiday season? Give us the details, expressing them with great adjectives.

After editing your masterpiece for grammar, punctuation, phrasing, spelling, wordiness and quality of language, feel free to share it with those who helped make your Holiday so special. Having done that, feel free to share the work with the rest of us. Post it, publish it, and even place an excerpt in the comments section below this article.

But most of all treasure it. You have documented a very special part of your life; one that you can reflect on for the rest of your life and use in planning for future Holiday seasons. After all, you may unknowingly create a special memory for someone special to you.

WRITE TO EXCITE: Need A (Better) Job? Write!

Write to Excite with Peter Biadasz

In the past 3 months we have discussed your talent, your passion and controversy (Male or Female – Which is Superior?). Now we move onto a more personal topic, your job, or lack thereof.

If you find yourself unemployed, underemployed or just unhappy in your job/career you can utilize writing as a tool to drive you to the next level of success. No matter how you define success you will find that improving your writing skills in one or more of these areas will enrich your life both professionally and personally.

1 – Your Resume - It is amazing how many bad resumes exist amongst those who call themselves professionals. Many people think that their resume is merely a list of past employers and job responsibilities. Please remember that your resume is a marketing piece and that he product/service is YOU! When you or I buy a product or service we are buying results; we buy to answer “what’s in it for me?” Knowing that employers “buy” the same way, add to your resume your accomplishments. Lets face it, we all know what job titles are, what we don’t know is how you excelled in your job and how you added value to your position, your company and its employees. Review your resume today and add your accomplishments. You may find a better job as a result.

2 - Thank-you letters – Everyone likes to receive sincere thank-you letters. It makes us feel special, loved and alive with a purpose. People want to work with people who are not only competent, but make those around them feel good about themselves. Knowing this, I challenge you to write a thank-you note (not e-mail) and mail it to someone different everyday for 30 days. Thank you e-mails are ok, but do not have as much value as the experience of going to the mailbox, seeing that someone sent you some mail, holding an envelope addressed to you, opening up the envelope with anticipation and reading a signed than-you note. Add some joy to someone’s life today and write a thank-you note to those who have added joy to your life.

3 – Letters/e-mails to friends and family – Sometimes it is just good to get caught up with those that are important to us. We have all had the thought of getting in contact with someone “when things slow down”; but they never do slow down, do they? It is a reality that some people still feel very alone in spite have having so many people in their lives. Take some time everyday to write, e-mail or contact someone through social online media to caught up in what is going on in there life and let them know how you are doing. By doing so both of you both will be all the richer.

4 – Goals – Want to decrease your frustration level? Write out your goals. It is amazing how many people embark on this journey called life without their roadmap, which are their goals. Take a few minutes and write down 5 things that you want to accomplish in the next 6 months, both professionally and personally. In my public speaking life I give goal planning workshops, and we may devote an article to that. But in the mean time write down how you want your life to look, as well as a plan to achieve each goal.

5 - What you have always wanted to write – Take some time and write a piece you have always wanted to write; an article, poem, fiction or non-fiction book, etc. Get it out of your system and you may learn much in the process. My first article led to a book, which led now to 15 books and many more articles, and even to owning a publishing company, all in a few short years. You just never know where your first written piece will lead.

You will find that your writing will help you feel better about yourself and help others feel better about you. These attitudes combined with the learned in writing will be of great benefit as you word toward finding your dream job or profession. When you don’t know what to do, write to excite!

WRITE TO EXCITE: Male or Female – Which is Superior?

Write to Excite with Peter Biadasz

In the past 2 months we have discussed your talent and your passion. This month I am going to actually give you something to write about. This column is called “Write to Excite”, and nothing can excite passion more than controversy. However, as a writer there is a right and wrong way to approach sensitive subjects.

No matter what you write, the first step is to research the subject. On any topic you can take a logical or an emotional approach in your presentation. However, the more thorough your research, the more information you have to work with to better your work. Research the topic by going to the internet, read the appropriate books and magazines, and interview those who are most knowledgeable and/or opinionated about the topic on which you are writing.

The next step is to decide which target audience or audiences you are writing too. In the topic noted in the title, Male or Female – Which is Superior? , you will obviously write a different book/article/poem/etc. targeted to men that you would to woman. A different approach would also be taken when writing to couples versus recently divorced people. Hopefully, you will take a different approach when writing the piece for the significant other in your life.

Then decide your approach to the piece; will it be serious or satire? ; will it be a tear jerker or comedy? ; will it inform or incite? ; these questions, and others, must be answered before you start writing the piece. Also, decide how long you want the piece to be and establish a timeline for completion. We writers seem to work better with a deadline.

So now I ask you - Male or Female – Which is Superior? Perform your research, decide who your target audience is, understand the type of piece you want to write, decide on your approach, commit to a deadline….and do it!!!

After you write the piece, if you like, let me know your opinion - Male or Female – Which is Superior?

Always write to excite!

WRITE TO EXCITE: What Is Your Passion?

Write to Excite with Peter Biadasz

In last months article we discussed your talent (You Have A Talent!) If you feel that your talent is writing; an article, email, blog, book, screenplay, poem, etc., then you are in the right place to learn how to write something to either excite yourself or someone else. If you feel you are alone in the desire to write something you are in big company. Studies have shown that 70% of people in the USA want to write a book, but just don’t know how to get started. Working with first time authors keeps me busy. Many times people will say they have and idea and do not know what to do next to develop the idea into a book, etc. Sometime someone will offer that they have written a piece and do not know what to do next. It in these scenarios that I thrive.

I have always heard that you should write what you know and something you have a passion for. Passion is defined by Merriam-Webster as “an intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction, and a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept.” Reflect on the things in your life that you are passionate about. Now begin to make a list of them now as you read this article. One of the mistakes that many people make it to write about something that other people are passionate about, thinking they are playing to a certain audience. When you write what you are passionate about the passion comes through in your writings, be it a blog, book or article, rather than a flat writing exercise to please another person. We are raised to write what we are required to do for a grade in school. Now you have the opportunity to write what you want for the reasons that you desire.

After you have listed your passions, rank the list in orders of passion strength and knowledge of each topic. Pick one of the top 3 on your list and start the writing process.

You may not even know what you are going to write; book, article, blog, etc. That is ok. Just start to list all the ideas you have on the topic you have chosen. No idea is too small or too big to list. After you have completed your list of ideas go to the internet, to a book store or library, to see what else on your topic may have been written. By doing this you are not only researching your passion, but identifying what unique perspective you bring to the topic.

Now that you have identified your passion, listed your ideas and performed some research; write an article, blog or book. Be careful to not write and edit at the same time. Writing involves the creative side of the brain while editing involves the other side of the brain. Write the price in its entirety and then go back and edit. By following this process you will find writing less frustrating.
After all, you should enjoy the writing experience. Enjoy the experience!

If you have any questions about this writing process feel free to contact me at the e-mail address listed below.

WRITE TO EXCITE: You Have A Talent!

Write to Excite with Peter Biadasz

“You have a talent” is something you may have heard many times in your life. The problem is, many times the person making the comment to you is a well meaning family member or friend just trying to make you feel better, yet leaving you with a feel good moment (maybe), and offering no information on what your talent may be or how to develop that talent for the good of either yourself or others.

This column, "Write to Excite!", will offer you information which will not only assist in discovering your talents and abilities, but guide you as to how to develop them for the benefit of yourself, and if you choose, the benefit of others. Of course the slant will be towards the written word, but you may find that some of the principles I discuss have some universal applications. Plus, one of the best ways to broadcast your talent to your network is through the written word, be it a book, article or blog.

It has been my experience that people do not do things for one of two reasons – either they don’t want to – or – they don’t know how. Studies have shown that 70% of people want to write a book, but have yet to do it. I can show you how to write a book and recently wrote a book on that topic, Write Your First Book, How To Start, Finish and Publish The Book Inside Of You.

First let me share with you the road I traveled to get to where I am now. Maybe you can relate to some, or all, of my journey.

I always knew I was a creative person. In other words, making things up was always easy. My parents helped me to channel my energies into music and certain school subjects. I play a variety of musical instruments, with trumpet being my principle noise maker, I mean - vehicle to express myself. As a result of my musical activities, which have lasted several decades, I have had the chance to meet some great people, go to some amazing places, and add joy to the lives of others. I also wrote three song for my sister’s wedding. I still play my trumpet in some of my public speaking presentations; really wakes the crowd up and keeps their attention.

But in light of what appeared to be success, I was still very frustrated. I knew I still had much unused potential. At one point someone in my “network” invited me to their networking group. I accepted the invitation and then asked, “What is a networking group?”. Even though I had been networking all of my life, I had no idea that groups existed in which the sole purpose was to assist in growing each other’s businesses.

I joined the group and started passing leads in earnest, because that is what they said I was supposed to do. Three months later I was elected President of the group because I was passing the most leads. I was now standing in front of a room of successful professionals and, as their President; I was expected to lead them.

This was my welcome to public speaking. Not only did this make me sick at the time, but I had to figure out what I was going to say to these people every week for one year. After asking myself – “Why would anyone come to a Peter Biadasz meeting?” I made a decision. The decision was to become an expert in the art of people networking.

I studied networking; spoke on it weekly, first to my networking group, then other groups, then seminars and on. It was great! When someone asked for my book as a follow-up to the great information I had just shared I told them I was not a writer and that they should take good notes. Eventually an editor had me transform my speeches into a series of articles, which led to, now 15 books on various topics, as well as a publishing company. I “met” Adam J. Kovitz about the time my first book was released and became one of, if not his first, TNNW bureau chief. (I write “met” because even though we have talked a gazillion times on the phone and I write monthly for his publication, we have never been in the same room at the same time.)

What is my talent? At this point I would say it is sharing information with people for the betterment of everybody.

You have a talent! This month I ask you, What is your talent? Write it down right now. What steps can you take to develop that talent? Write those steps down now (why wait?)

Read this column every month and you will be equipped to do what you have always wanted to do, especially with the written word. You too can "Write to Excite!"

U.S., SOUTHERN PLAINS: Still Remembering The Alamo

By Peter Biadasz, U.S., Southern Plains Bureau Chief
(Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico)

In the February, 2007 edition of The National Networker I had the honor of introducing to you The Alamo Executives Association (AEA) in San Antonio, Texas. Just before I called its Executive Director, Diane Nichols, to write this update, I perused through their website to see what changes may have occurred since I last visited with them. I was both surprised and please when I saw my own smiling face looking back at me from the “About Us” section of their website. You see, they proudly posted the article from the February, 2007 edition and have utilized it as a method to promote their group. Very wise use of publicity! I don’t want to say that the article can be credited with their recent successes, but not many networking groups in this country can boast having as a member an individual who has owned both an NBA and NFL franchise, but AEA can boast of this success, as well as many others,.

AEA, started in 1989, is still noted to be impressive, honest, close, fantastic, brilliant, and fun while still meeting every Tuesday morning from 7:00 – 8:30. Passing leads as well as information is still the group’s forte. In addition, members have experienced an increased growth in sales through member recommendations of products and services. AEA is an exclusive organization of business owners and executives from non-competing businesses in the San Antonio area. AEA’s exclusivity provides a non-competing atmosphere that allows for open discussion and exchanges to occur.

The group’s stated purpose is to increase its members’ sales of goods and services through the exchange of information and leads. It seems to be working well. According to Ms. Nichols, the group has transacted now over $73,000,000 since its inception and has grown to 48 members. These numbers are the result of lead passing standards set by AEA. At each weekly meeting members are required to submit an average of at least one business lead or referral to another member.

Total business to date in 2009 stands at $953,310.00

One of the biggest notes within the group is how many of the members are nationally ranked within their industries. It is understood that each member is responsible for and credited with the success of the membership. Besides the weekly meetings, the group still enjoys outside activities together. Most involve food as well as going to area attractions. There are quarterly mixers, a big bowling night, the annual Retama Park Party and the annual trek to Austin on board a luxury motor coach to enjoy the hilarious Esther's Follies (which offers hilarious satire on all the news makers and events fit to parody). Delicious potluck parties are also held periodically at various members’ homes.

This seems like a very balanced and successful networking group. In fact, it has been called the “premier group in San Antonio” in which the members truly “believe in each other”. Membership is by invitation only.

U.S. SOUTHERN PLAINS: Houston’s One Stop Networking Source – Part II

By Peter Biadasz
Southern Plains Bureau Chief
(Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico)

In January of 2007 I introduced you to Houston Networking News, or HNN, which has as its slogan – “Your Source for Business Networking”. HNN supports the networking activities of more than 350 organizations while their networking calendar contains more than 600 networking activities each month in the Houston, Texas metropolitan area. The HNN calendar also contains the unique HNN events that are being held each month. No matter where you find yourself in virtually any part of Houston on any week day, there is probably a business networking event that you can attend. As an “information central” source it is a timesaver in researching the best place to be to grow our business and expand our network most efficiently.

In addition, HNN sponsors a yearly expo that involves a hundred exhibitors and a thousand attendees. Not only is the expo a great place to showcase products and services but an excellent place to network. The event includes seminar speakers such as Dr. Ivan Misner, founder and chairman of Business Networking International (BNI), but also has a business luncheon and designated networking areas. The event is planned with the success of every participant in mind.

HNN was founded in 2003 to provide business professionals a collective source for all business networking activities in the Greater Houston area. Because of the initial positive response to HNN and the expressed desire for HNN members to network with each other, HNN developed and conducts a series of their own business networking functions, in addition to supporting those of other organizations. They have become a unique organization that appeals to the business and social needs of ANY business professional interested in networking in Houston.

According to R.D. Yoder, President of HNN, his organization is “driven to help others with regards to business to business networking.” Mr. Yoder also hosts “Business Networking and Houston”, a radio show focused on Networking in Houston. The show airs on AM-650, CNN Radio, Wednesday and Thursday at noon, CST. Tune in for great information and a variety of business related topics. You can also listen to the show live at CNN650.com

HNN has many ways to assist in the growth of companies as well as offer vehicles for personal growth. While being not only committed to their members, but also to the overall Houston business community, HNN can show you how business networking will help in achieving goals, build ones bottom line and develop lasting business and personal relationships. You can also follow HNN on LinkedIn, Facebook andTwitter
HNN currently has over 5,000 member contacts with their website www.HoustonNetworkingNews.com getting approximately 250,000 hits per month from interested Houston business professionals. The HNN website offers tremendous flexibility to members. The site home page and HNN calendar is updated regularly to reflect the upcoming events and to describe the happenings from past events. The networking calendar lists networking events in Houston each month as well as online registration for these events. For those who wish to communicate directly with other HNN members, the website offers private messaging capability. Finally, it offers members the capability to communicate with other members on specific topics of interest through user forums. Sponsors can also advertise on the website through click-through logo placement.

As a complement to the web site and networking events, HNN also publishes a weekly e-newsletter to Houston business professionals. This newsletter provides information on key events as well as networking hints and other pertinent information. While the HNN website and events are the key ingredients that allow the HNN members to communicate with each other, the newsletter is the glue that binds the organization together. It keeps everyone knowledgeable of the upcoming events of interest. Each newsletter contains information on upcoming HNN events, a networking tip of the week , a quote of the week, job opportunities for interested readers, featured event of the week (from the business development organizations supported by HNN) , as well as focused audience for advertisers.

HNN has many different events each month to appeal to a wide and diverse audience. Gatherings are held in the evening, noon and breakfast. They are held at different venues each month and are open to members and non-members of HNN. Each meeting will have on average 60 to 100 people in attendance.
