Have doom and gloom taken a temporary holiday? | A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER

Have doom and gloom taken a temporary holiday?

by Adam J. Kovitz

Entrepreneurs, by nature, are used to the wild up and down nature of being in the business of high risk/high reward, but even those amongst us with the highest of intestinal fortitude have been challenged in recent weeks due to several factors:
1.)  The knock-down, dragged out legislative battle over over the raising of the U.S. debt ceiling
2.)  The unprecedented downgrade of the U.S. treasury bond rating from AAA to AA+ by one of the three major ratings agencies (S&P)
3.)  A deflated housing market that is showing slow (if any) signs of recovery
4.)  Unemployment averaging 9%, which does not include underemployment, recently graduated from college but not employed and those who have just given up looking
5.)  China, the up-and-coming economic world power who holds on to a substantial portion of U.S. debt warning us to watch ourselves and our "addiction to debt"
6.)  The major earthquake and nuclear disaster in Japan a few months ago
7.)  Europe has been having their own economic instabilities and there's rioting in London.

But I've been shocked over the past few days, things haven't looked as dark as they have in the news and media.  It's almost as if we've been conditioned to take our daily dose of doom and gloom and simply eat it, but now it's being withheld from us.  What the heck?

Just when I expect to see a major environmental, meteorological, political and/or economic catastrophe in the news, I am seeing that perhaps hell, has indeed, been frozen over:
1.)  One of the world's wealthiest men begging Congress to tax him and "his kind" even more (Stop Coddling the Super-Rich)
2.)  Consumers are getting better at curbing their own addiction to debt (Household debt falls slightly)
3.)  Foreclosures rates are falling (Foreclosures fall for 10th straight month)
4.)  China and the U.S. have more of a symbiotic relationship than either would care to admit (China's not doing us a favor)
5.)  There are less people claiming unemployment (Claims for unemployment aid fall to a four-month low)

Is this the start of the major turnaround in our global economic crisis?  Can we all start breaking out in "Happy Days are Here Again"?

Or...

Are doom and gloom just doing the summer thing that most everyone else is and simply taking a temporary holiday?  Perhaps with the economy the way it is, they might even be taking a "stay-cation".

Either way...it's a nice change of pace after the long rash of doomsday-esque headlines.

As entrepreneurs, we need to find victories, no matter how small or seemingly-inconsequential, wherever and whenever we can.

All my best,

Adam

A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER: Should We be Happy with the "New Normal"?

Should We be Happy with the "New Normal"?

by Adam J. Kovitz

There have been many articles I've seen recently (most notably Five 'new normals that will really stick) about our current economic situation and the so-called "New Normals" to which we must adapt.

One such "New Normal" is Long-term Unemployment. According to the National Jobs for All Coalition, the official unemployment rate for July, 2010 was 9.5% (up 0.1% from July, 2009), resulting in 14.6 million U.S. citizens without jobs and collecting benefits. When you factor in the underemployed - 8.5 million and those working part time or those whose benefits have run out and are no longer counted - 5.9 million. Bottom line: a staggering 20 million people (18.2% of the labor force) are not working. There are roughly 10 job seekers for every open position available.

Even if economists are right in their predictions that unemployment will drop to 8.7% by the end of 2011 and 6.8% by 2013, it would mean adding 300,000 jobs per month for 3 years according to a University of Maryland Business professor.

So from where will these jobs come and what will those without jobs do to support their families until such time as they get a job?

There are many folks that still believe that they can get a job in the corporate sector - perhaps for a company that's fortunate enough to be "too big to fail". Good luck...it's a buyers market out there and they can afford to be brutally particular. I, myself, have found working for these types of companies to be life-sucking, demoralizing and just plain wrong for me - I like my freedom and refuse to sell my soul. Of course, the other problem is that many of these companies will continue to be under pressure by stakeholders to produce healthy profits. What better way to do so than by cutting jobs if you can't get more blood revenue from your corporate stones?

Is working for the government any better? Sure...they may have jobs, but many of them are temporary (like the U.S. Census Bureau). There is also the monotony the lack of creativity and the usual red tape that one must deal with.

My advice to those who are waiting for their dream job to magically appear is this...you have 3 options:

1.) Try to continue to find a job - remember the definition of insanity - doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. If you're hoping that someone else will create your dream job for you, you will be waiting a very long time. If quiet desperation is your thing, go for it. Accepting of the "New Normal"? Yep.

2.) Do nothing - giving up, letting your benefits run out (if you still have them), losing your house, losing hope, losing yourself. Sure...it's an option, and requires the least amount of effort. Accepting of the "New Normal"? Yep.

3.) Create your own dream job by starting your own business or joining another emerging enterprise - will it be difficult? Yes. Will you have to rely upon others? Yes. Will you live your life in quiet desperation? Possibly. Is there a chance you will fail? Only if you give up. Is this the only possible way to win and gain your freedom? I certainly think so. Accepting of the "New Normal"? No friggin' way!

To me, option #3 is the only option, and a winning one especially if us emerging enterprises work together. It's part of the solution and not a continuance or acceptance of the status quo.

In my own entrepreneurial journey that has involved countless hours of relationship building, personal agonies and triumphs (sometimes all within the same day!), and a lot of "luck", I have found those who would stand beside me and pitch in - it's wonderful when that happens.

I suggest you do your own soul searching and see which of the three options you may have tried and to what degree of success you have had.

In the meantime, if you choose Option 3 (and considering this is a publication for entrepreneurs and emerging enterprises you probably have), I know some great organizations who are willing to stand beside you and help you achieve greater success. There's always room at our table for those who simply cannot accept the "New Normal".

Moving on...

MANAGING YOUR CAREER: Shifting Couple Relationships

Managing Your Career with Estelle H. Rauch, LSCW, CGP

Extended unemployment for the primary breadwinner can be accompanied by lowered self-esteem, loss of position within the family, and in the most severe instances, of mental health. Psychotherapists working with couples overwhelmed with the problems associated with this crisis at times neglect the potentially serious impact on the lives of their dependent children.

'Jamie,' 14, whispered to me, "Can I talk to you," when I emerged with her parents following their session. After receiving her parents' permission, I listened as Jaime guiltily reported her father's nightly drinking, parents' loud fighting, and her own beginning bulimia and self-cutting behavior - all to reduce her unmanageable tension.

Matthew, 9, in another family, drew such disturbing pictures in his 3rd grade class that his teacher referred the family to the community's mental health clinic. Parents were both out of work, their home in foreclosure. His father had left the family to return to his parents' home in Georgia, where the man had found some off-the-books work with relatives. No one had helped either Matthew or his 4 year old sister comprehend the rapidly deteriorating family situation.

During the recent severe economic downturn, I have worked with several families struggling with consequences following extended unemployment. I try to help each person appreciate the pain, fear and often displaced frustration and anger undermining self-esteem and ultimately poisoning the family environment. Therapy's objective: to reduce fear and dangerous behaviors while activating each individual's healthy energy for problem-solving, while paying serious attention to the children, who, in my opinion, should always be a part of therapeutic thinking, and at times, of intervention.

WRITE TO EXCITE: Need A (Better) Job? Write!

Write to Excite with Peter Biadasz

In the past 3 months we have discussed your talent, your passion and controversy (Male or Female – Which is Superior?). Now we move onto a more personal topic, your job, or lack thereof.

If you find yourself unemployed, underemployed or just unhappy in your job/career you can utilize writing as a tool to drive you to the next level of success. No matter how you define success you will find that improving your writing skills in one or more of these areas will enrich your life both professionally and personally.

1 – Your Resume - It is amazing how many bad resumes exist amongst those who call themselves professionals. Many people think that their resume is merely a list of past employers and job responsibilities. Please remember that your resume is a marketing piece and that he product/service is YOU! When you or I buy a product or service we are buying results; we buy to answer “what’s in it for me?” Knowing that employers “buy” the same way, add to your resume your accomplishments. Lets face it, we all know what job titles are, what we don’t know is how you excelled in your job and how you added value to your position, your company and its employees. Review your resume today and add your accomplishments. You may find a better job as a result.

2 - Thank-you letters – Everyone likes to receive sincere thank-you letters. It makes us feel special, loved and alive with a purpose. People want to work with people who are not only competent, but make those around them feel good about themselves. Knowing this, I challenge you to write a thank-you note (not e-mail) and mail it to someone different everyday for 30 days. Thank you e-mails are ok, but do not have as much value as the experience of going to the mailbox, seeing that someone sent you some mail, holding an envelope addressed to you, opening up the envelope with anticipation and reading a signed than-you note. Add some joy to someone’s life today and write a thank-you note to those who have added joy to your life.

3 – Letters/e-mails to friends and family – Sometimes it is just good to get caught up with those that are important to us. We have all had the thought of getting in contact with someone “when things slow down”; but they never do slow down, do they? It is a reality that some people still feel very alone in spite have having so many people in their lives. Take some time everyday to write, e-mail or contact someone through social online media to caught up in what is going on in there life and let them know how you are doing. By doing so both of you both will be all the richer.

4 – Goals – Want to decrease your frustration level? Write out your goals. It is amazing how many people embark on this journey called life without their roadmap, which are their goals. Take a few minutes and write down 5 things that you want to accomplish in the next 6 months, both professionally and personally. In my public speaking life I give goal planning workshops, and we may devote an article to that. But in the mean time write down how you want your life to look, as well as a plan to achieve each goal.

5 - What you have always wanted to write – Take some time and write a piece you have always wanted to write; an article, poem, fiction or non-fiction book, etc. Get it out of your system and you may learn much in the process. My first article led to a book, which led now to 15 books and many more articles, and even to owning a publishing company, all in a few short years. You just never know where your first written piece will lead.

You will find that your writing will help you feel better about yourself and help others feel better about you. These attitudes combined with the learned in writing will be of great benefit as you word toward finding your dream job or profession. When you don’t know what to do, write to excite!

BECAUSE I CAN: Ending Slavery in the U.S. and Abroad

Because I Can with Adam J. Kovitz

“So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains and we never even know we have the key.”

- from “Already Gone” by Jack Tempchin and Robert Arnold Strandlund

When many of us think of slavery, we look back to the darker parts of our history like during the founding of the United States when slavery, as an institution, was considered integral to our very economy, especially in the southern states which relied upon a more agrarian society through the production of tobacco, indigo and cotton. For a while in the early years, there were heady debates over the morality of keeping slaves but nothing constructive was done about it until the Civil War brought everything to a head. During this time, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and Congress later ratified the Thirteenth Amendment, effectively freeing the slaves and abolishing the practice of slavery in the United States.

We would like to think that we’ve come so far as a society, but as a concerned world citizen, networker, Relationship Capital thought leader and Futurist I look at seemingly disparate data, attempt to synthesize it and am alarmed at what I see. I continue to see slavery (in the classic sense) being used as an economic tool in other parts of the world, as well as insidious variations on the same ugly theme still being regularly employed and culturally elsewhere, including right here in the U.S.

But why should I speak out about this issue?

Because I can. And even more importantly, because I should.

Slavery and Human Trafficking

In a recent blogpost by former U.S. State Department Ambassador and Executive Director of the Polaris Project Mark Lagon on the Change.org Human Trafficking Blog, he suggests that “Steel and biofuels from Brazil, rubber and shrimp from Thailand, cotton from Uzbekistan” are all under suspect for such practices in their production. More alarmingly, these goods are produced for major G8 countries, including the U.S. He goes on to urge the U.S. Government Department of Labor to create a list of such countries and products for consumers so that we may be empowered to make the decision not to purchase such goods.

The most frustrating part of the post is that despite a mandate from Congress in 2005 for the Department to produce the list, to this date it is still not a reality. Why? Because the Department of Labor does not want to offend any countries or companies implicated. Really?

An even more gruesome example on the same blog is a post by Amanda Kloer who talks about “baby farms” in Nigeria and India in which young teen girls, sometimes trafficked or tricked, sometimes of their own will, are paid to have babies, which are then sold into slavery.

Bottom Line: There is profit in dehumanization, and where there’s profit, there’s power and an economy. The more profit and power amassed, the greater the need to feed it further with the enslavement and dehumanization of larger numbers.

“Civilized” Slavery in the U.S.

Before I get into why I believe legalized slavery still exists in the U.S., I wanted to share the following with you:

  1. Dictionary.com defines slavery as “A condition of hard work and subjection”.
  2. In a recent New York Times article, the unemployment rate as of July, 2009 is 9.5% and the underemployment rate is at 16.5% (underemployment also takes into account those working part-time due to loss in hours or lack of full time job availability). Neither of these figures take into account those whose benefits have run out and still cannot find a job.
  3. A recent CNNMoney.com article on job satisfaction reports that 54% of currently-employed Americans plan to find another job once the recession is over and as much as 71% for those aged 18-29.
  4. Wall Street Journal reported that most Americans are “Drowning in Mortgage Debt” and that 20% of all mortgages on U.S. single-family homes exceed the estimated current value.
  5. According to an article in the Washington Post, several Wall St. investment banks, after receiving their bailout money (thanks to American taxpayers), are going back to business as usual by compensating their executives and other employees with billions of dollars – at levels even higher than before the bailout.

What does the above point to? To me it says that as long as lobbyists are paid by big business to influence legislators and government buckles under pressure to prevent legislature from passing meaningful, enforceable laws that reign in the “business as usual” mentality that is working hard to preserve the status quo that benefits the privileged few in the short term, we are headed – quickly – toward an unsustainable and disastrous chapter in the history of Humankind.

Why?

Because the more big business is allowed to act irresponsibly, the more the masses suffer.

Why?

Because big business answers only to an unconditional financial bottom line. This bottom line is devoid of humanity, and any shred of reinvestment in Humanity or Society-At-Large is seen as a sign of weakness. What does this mean?

People suffer. When the American people experience a corrosion of the fundamental middle-class due to unemployment, they cannot pay their expenses. When this happens, there is more reliance upon a slow-moving, unresponsive government to help them out. In the meantime, people get hungry, they get scared, and they get desperate. The situation is inherently divisive, with an increasing disparity between the growing ranks of the poor, and the insulated rich. The poor, in effect, become financially enslaved by the rich.

Breeding Ground for Revolution

In a climate such as this, revolution becomes a real possibility. Marie Antoinette said, “If the poor have no bread, then let them eat cake.” This callous remark, smacking of depraved indifference to the plight of the poor people (who, ironically, have always filled the silos of the rich), let to her famous beheading.

The fundamental status quo as an economic “default setting” in the U.S., as well as in many parts of this world must change. It breeds violence and misery. It foments revolution. It is a recursive, self-perpetuating cancer which requires education, advocacy and activism to change. The governments of the world are so profoundly enmeshed in it that they are compromised.

Ultimately, if a very violent final chapter in the book of all Human History is to be avoided, investments in human dignity must be perceived as positive and rewarded, and investments in slavery and suffering must be either taxed or otherwise punished if the pendulum over us is to be stilled. An economic system that embraces its own humanity, is fully transparent to all citizens and is inherently sustainable must be adopted. A positive movement in this direction has to be started at a grassroots level.

We believe that our ever-increasing core of faithful Subscribers is comprised of fundamentally good people. They are blessed with the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. They are receptive, and by virtue of their works, Humanitarian. They have inherent flexibility and adaptability. Our Subscribers have riches that they have not yet fully drawn upon. THE NATIONAL NETWORKER calls upon you to invest a generous portion of your networking and relationship-capital building skills and efforts in benevolent activism. The dividends are great beyond measure. Any failure to use our gifts to do what large, conflicted, compromised and slow-moving government bodies just cannot do makes us a party to our own eventual enslavement and the enslavement of our children and subsequent generations.

Poverty, and a lack of a lawful means to escape it, is indeed a form of slavery. The fear and insecurity that accompany systematic dehumanization are a form of enslavement as well.

Our Subscribers are great people with great promise. We are a multinational nation in heart and mind and cyberspace. We can, if we choose to work together, eliminate slavery from the entrenched short-sightedness of the status quo.

Why?

Because we can.

Until next month...
