BEYOND NETWORKING: BEING: The Power of Making the Connection

Ron Sukenick
Beyond Networking: Being with Ron Sukenick

The Power of Making the Connection

In the book The Power of Flow, Charlene Belitz and Meg Lundstrom share ideas on how you transform your life with meaningful coincidence. They talk about a day in which you make every green light and slip effortlessly into a parking spot in the most crowded part of town.

You make a to-call list, and the people on it call you first. You turn on the radio just in time to hear the exact information you need. As you think about a new career direction, you bump into a friend you haven’t seen in years, who tells you of an exciting job opportunity.

These coincidences are called synchronicity, and according to Belitz and Lundstom are sure signs that you’re in the flow; we say that you’re in tune with making the connection.

Making the connection is hard to define. It’s a higher force at work that seems to help align intention with outcome.

Regardless of how you describe the term, psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi says it well when he defines being in the flow as “optimal experience, a state of concentration so focused that it amounts to absolute absorption in an activity.”

Synchronicity is the coming together of inner and outer events in a way that cannot be explained by cause and effect, and that is meaningful to the observer.

Synchronous events are possible each and every day.

The more aware we are of our self and our surroundings, the more likely it is that making the connection will occur. Possessing certain internal characteristics will help strengthen the possibilities for these synchronistic connections to take place.

Commitment: Your commitment to your own growth and expansion keeps you tuned in to what is constantly possible.

Mutuality: You want for the other as you want for yourself. Mutual regard and mutual success permeates the exchange.

Courage: You are willing to take the risk to reach out to others.

Focus: You remember your aim as you move throughout your day.

Passion: An intense, driving feeling moves through and with you.

Immediacy: You have the quality or state of being “ready,” of being able to respond in the moment.

Openness: You are receptive to ideas and people’s feelings.

Positivism: You focus on the positive in ways you connect rather than individual differences that disconnect.

Giving to the World: Promoting the best possible outcome for your partner separate from your self.

Connecting the Dots

Connecting the dots from a relationship “feeling” standpoint is intangible. It’s the synchronicity described above, calling for focus, clarity, and direction, as we move toward mutual results.

The Law of Gravity states that every particle in the universe is attracted to every other particle! Gravity is what organizes things on the microscopic level. It’s what holds things together—the solar system, the galaxy, the universe. What dynamic causes this to occur on a human level? Perhaps it is the same gravitational pulls, metabolic attraction and biological forces that operate on a universal level.

We are part of an interdependent and ever changing community. I feel a connection we’ve said from time to time when we’ve met someone personally or professionally who we would like to know further. This feeling takes us into the relationship and helps us move toward connection: a feeling energy that illuminates the path before us, causes excitement, and even feels mysterious or mystical. We cannot argue with it! Who are you? Who am I? What is possible between us? Now, you might be wondering if I am talking about a personal connection here. Yes, AND this feeling energy is present in business relationships as well.

BEYOND NETWORKING: BEING: Are You a Person Who Excels in Telling Anecdotes?

Beyond Networking: Being with Ron Sukenick

Are you a good talker?

If so, you may be a bona fide Networking raconteur. And if not, you might consider becoming one.

From all my years of networking and connecting with people, the greatest tool of all time has been my ability to share and tell stories to others when connecting.

Never thought of yourself as being a raconteur, have you?

There have always been two kinds of people that exist in the world of networking.
  1. The one’s that tell the story

  2. And the one’s that buy into it.

Which one are you?

It’s quite often when I meet people, it’s the same old stuff. Hello. How are you. What do you do etc.

While all that stuff is pretty straightforward, simple, and considered to be small talk, why not tell a story of something that inspires you, or a story you heard from someone else that inspired you?

People love stories. And people love it when others listen to the stories they are telling.

Storytelling is the conveying of events in words, images and sounds often by improvisation or embellishment. Stories or narratives have been shared in every culture as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation and in order to instill moral values.

If you think my idea of telling stories is a good idea, and want to gain a better understanding of it, I’d suggest that you visit - The National Storytelling Network (NSN) who serves individuals and organizations that use the power of storytelling in all its forms. http://www.storynet.org/

Oh by the way, Raconteur" has been part of the English vocabulary since at least 1828.

BEYOND NETWORKING: BEING: Making the Most from Your Networking Efforts As You Move Into the Year 2011

Beyond Networking: Being with Ron Sukenick

As I move closer to any new year, I always have a tendency to self reflect and ask the following question:

What can I do to create a bigger impact in how I network, and at the same time, support the networking efforts of others.

Listed below are some suggestions you might consider paying attention to.

Here are my 15 top suggestions for greater networking success in 2011

1. Invest more TIME with people (do 121’s with the people you are meeting) The biggest investment you will make in building relationships and building your business is TIME. Simply stated, the more you know and understand others, the more likely that relationship will flourish.

2. Become PURPOSE driven – If relationships are going to be at the fore-front of your networking activities, then you first have to strengthen your relationship with self. Self reflection, reason for being, purpose driven and vision is an important part of that process. If you don’t take the time to sit back and work on yourself, who will?

3. Create unparallel VISIBILITY – The bottom line for more business in 2011 is simply becoming more visible. That means getting targeted with face to face and on-line social networks. While Face book is a cool place to hang out, consider strengthening your profile and connection base on such sites as Face book & LinkedIn to make more of a professional impact worldwide. Also, take a closer look at the micro sites that are more geographic to the area where you are marketing your services and creating impact. Some examples are –
www.SmallerIndiana.com (central Indiana) www.biznik.com (pacific northwest) etc. Do you have any regionally social site you should be a part of?

4. Develop relationship strategies – Everyone talks about relationships. Now you can do something about it. A relationship strategy is anything that you can do that adds value to others. Strategies put you in command and control of your relationship mindset. Don’t just talk about it. Do something about it. Develop your strategies today. (if you would like a list of 15 top relationships strategies to begin working with), visit www.ronsukenick.com and under resources, feel free to download for FREE the Relationship Strategies Blueprint.

If you need help in getting them implemented, don’t hesitate to give me a call.

5. Relentlessly Follow-UP – -Think about some of the recent networking events you attended and ask yourself the following questions:

a/ From the 10-15 people you might of met, how many actually followed up with you by sending a note in the mail, an e-mail, or a phone call and said – “What a pleasure it was meeting you at the recent any-town Chamber of Commerce event”?

b/ In fact, ask yourself the same question – How many did you actually follow up with a note, an e-mail, or even a phone call?

See what I mean? I told you so. Nobody is following up with anybody.

If you need a simple follow-up system that works every-time send an e-mail to rs@ronsukenick.com and I’ll send you what I call the “Magic of 6”.

What’s great about it is that it works every-time.

6. Be in a hurry – The biggest driving force in our country and in fact the world continues to be speed. People want what they want. And the want it NOW!

Take the moment and dance with it. Don’t wait to get better connected. And don’t wait to provide the support that’s needed now by the many people your meeting.

7. Find ways to become more useful and resourceful to others - Simply stated, whatever you have done to satisfy anyone yesterday, it won’t be enough to satisfy them tomorrow. I want to suggest that you immediately look for no less than 6 ways that you can become more useful and resourceful to others. Let me give you a hint. Keep meeting people. The more people you know that know what to do next, and know how to get things done, the more useful and resource you will be.

8. Increase you frequency of interaction – Increased interaction brings increased cooperation with others. To many times people fail to follow up with people their meeting. If you can get up to 6 interactions with anyone, it’s likely you’ll have a good beginning for a relationship that will never end. See my suggestion # 5 for more comments to support this suggestion.

9. Share your referral club experience – There are many people in business today that are not happy with the amount of business they are doing, the amount of profits they are earning, and the amount of sales they are making.

That’s the very reason why business referral groups like Gold Star, BNI, and LeTips are achieving the success their having.

When you find a group of dedicated business professionals that meet weekly in a structured agenda, with the sole purpose of building relationships, and passing referral to one another, it’s a sure win.

10. Connect the Dots as often as you can (making the most from the Small World Phenomena) – When was the last time you heard that infamous expression – It’s such a Small World Isn’t It? – Keep in mind that the power in your networking efforts is always in the connection.

Did you know that the connection between you and the people your meeting, is never between you and the people your meeting? It’s between you, them, and something else that you have in common. If you want to learn more about this process, e-mail me for my article – “It’s such a small world isn’t it?”

11. Increase the rewardingness – If you want people to act the way you want them to act, you have to increase the rewards of being and doing business with you. Whether it’s knowing more people, becoming a better listener, or even just putting in a toll free number to reach you, people will always respond to something they like and appreciate. Keep the rewards coming.

12. Take the Joy of Interaction to higher levels – Let’s face it. The reason why you love this thing called networking is clearly because of what I call – The Joy of Interaction. Isn’t it fun? I didn’t say it was productive. I just said its fun. So when you’re out interacting with others, consider bringing the following characteristics to the table – fun, excitement, passion, creativity, dependability, responsibility and support.

13. Go after the relationship, not just the sale – This is the very reason why most people find networking so in-effective. There going after the sale. When looking to build your business, think relationship first.

14. Don’t manage people (manage the system) – Systems build business and are more predictable and reliable. In a networking environment, it’s very difficult to get people to do what you want them to do, and if you could, it would have to be with their own willingness to get it done. My suggestion is that you stick to a predictable system that works every time.
If interested, go to YouTube and search for the Ron Sukenick Toaster story. It’s a metaphor for how you can build relationship with the use of a system. You will love it.

15. Listen three times as much – When you speak, you learn what you know. When you listen, you learn what others know. The power has always been in the listening. Here’s a good question you should ask yourself – When was the last time anyone said – Thanks for taking the time to listen? If it’s been while, go back to work and become a great listener.

In fact, great listeners, have great connections.

So when all is said and done, Stay focused.

Challenge your thinking and underlying beliefs, be more strategic, go after the relationship, connect the dots, make the connection, and always take the moment and dance with it.
