This week, it was my pleasure to be able to speak at Social Media Lab, (on Facebook), a one-day conference at the Universita IULM, in the South-west of Milan. Professor Francesco D'Orazio assembled the event to kick-start a Milanese social scene based around technology and in particular Web 2.0 and Social Networking, having seen the galvanising effect on innovation that regular social events in London has brought about. Francesco put together a formidable panel of speakers drawn from the UK and Italy, covering a wide range of topics centred around the opportunities that Web 2.0 provides...

Safety Net-Workers are Opportunists
Power Thought of the Week
By Patricia Parham, Ph.D., Contributing Writer
We often network with specific goals in mind. And, sometimes we overlook possibilities that the universe is offering because of our single-minded devotion to our stated agenda. Listen for unexpected “gifts” that may accrue from networking and consider how these people, materials or ideas might support you in unexpected and profitable ways. For example, in networking for clients, I was steered to a large, auditioned chorus which has brought work, extended family, and joy into my life.

Creativity in NetWorking
By Harvey Mathason, Contributing Writer
Six degrees of separation is a concept promoted by the actor Kevin Bacon. It means that if a person is one “step” away from each person that he or she knows and two “steps” away from each person who is known by one of the people he or she knows, then everyone is no more than six “steps” away from each person on Earth or a population of 6.6 billion people.
My son Brian is a member of an Honorary Society that meets to have dinner with astronauts. He has a plaque with their signatures. I noticed two, Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell. Buzz Aldrin is the second man to land on the moon and Jim Lovell is the person honored in the movie Apollo 13. Jim Lovell invited Tom Hanks, the star of the movie, to his home. Although the information I learned about Lovell is minimal, it’s certainly information that I am highly unlikely to learn on google.
For whatever it’s worth, I was delighted to think I was only one degree of separation away from the second man on the moon and the astronaut responsible for the Apollo 13 movie. Knowing me would then place you two degrees of separation from the second man on the moon and the astronaut responsible for Apollo 13...

Networking with Skype
By MIKE O'NEIL, Technology Editor
There is nothing quite like a story that is hot off the grill. That would be this one and I think a lot of people can relate to the problem – your cell phone goes out on an important out of state business trip. What do you do?
At Integrated Alliances we do business networking events and communications are the key to having everyone be happy about the outcome. A lack of communication can sink an event very quickly and can do so in front of lots of eyeballs. What happens when...Forward/Share This Article With Colleagues And Social Media:

David Weinberger: Let’s Start ‘Un-Managing’ Our Information
from the FastForward blog
by Joe McKendrick
November 27, 2007 at 12:46 pm
“In order to get maximum value from this ever-growing collection of ideas and information, in a real sense you have to un-manage it. It’s by un-managing it, by allowing everybody who touches it to add to the connections, to add their own links, ideas, reviews, bad ideas, good ideas, insights—that’s how the collection grows. Just as with the Web itself, it cannot scale sufficiently if it’s too centrally managed.”
-David Weinberger
David Weinberger, who I had the pleasure of meeting at FastForward’s San Diego confab earlier this year, and who’s work has graced these pages (Hylton provides a list here), recently discussed his latest book, Everything is Miscellaneous, with the editors at KnowledgeWorld...

Almost a decade ago, I met the following gentleman because of our involvement in the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and of a connection I had with his wife. Meet Greg Maes, Supplier Diversity Small Business Coordinator Supply Chain Management for Chevron Global Upstream (a Chevron U.S.A. Inc. Division Company).
Maria Elena: Thanks for taking the time to meet with me Greg! I know what a hectic travel schedule you keep. You recently won an award, congratulations! What is the official name of the award?
Greg: Corporate Advocate of the Year 2007 for the Women Business Enterprise Alliance. I accepted the award at their annual banquet in Houston, Texas.

franticindustries discusses extreme measures to deal with piracy
They Don’t Even Do This When You Kill People
If you download something that might turn out to be pirated in France, you will lose the right to use the internet. On the other hand, if you drive recklessly, or too fast in France, which might result in someone’s death or serious injury, you get a fine, or even prison time, but you don’t permanently lose the right to drive...What about users who don’t know they’re downloading pirated material? What about hackers breaking into WLANs and pirating stuff just to get accounts terminated? Huge companies like Google and Universal can’t agree on what is pirated, how to stop it, how to monitor it, but sure, the little guy has to know all this or else his internet pipe gets cut off...
If you haven't yet visited franticindustries.com, you're missing a lot!

The State of Networking in the Northern Plains
The State of Networking in the Northern Plains
By Robert Stanke, Northern Plains Bureau Chief
Welcome to the Northern Plains, fellow networkers! Welcome to the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Home of the Sioux State, and Mount Rushmore (I am still a believer those four guys are up there because they were awesome networkers…). Land of Cornhusker and Hawkeye networkers, respectively. And believe it or not – networking is alive and well! It’s not just happening at the major hubs of business.
It is happening at professional networking meetings, on college campuses, in local city chamber of commerce meeting rooms, at small town coffee shops, in the stands of minor league ball parks, and the local corner diner. The best part of all this networking is everyone is doing it. Individuals of all professions and all walks of life are finding ways to make connections and help one another. Sure, most people might not think of it specifically as "networking" like perhaps you and I may, but that is exactly what it is. Here in the Northern Plains, we just put our own little twist on it.

Networking with the Better Business Bureau
By BETTE DAOUST, Ph.D., Southwest Bureau Chief Bette's Bio Email article RSS feed Networking with the Better Business Bureau
When you think of the Better Business Bureau, what comes to mind? Probably a place for consumers to place their complaints and a place where businesses answer those complaints. You are also likely to think about the benefits of being a Better Business Bureau member such as credibility. But did you know that this is rapidly changing in many aspects? Did you know that the Better Business Bureau is rebranding and some of the initiatives will better serve businesses? It is starting to be evident across the US and Canada, however, there is one Better Business Bureau office that is really striving to make big changes to connect and help the small business. I am so fortunate to be a part of the Golden Gate Better Business Bureau and work with them in connecting businesses.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting with Oliver Picher, PR and marketing guru and creator of the blog, FunWithNetworking. It was well worth a trip to Philly to have the chance to sit down face to face with a master networker.
I got involved in networking as many of us do, to build my business. I was surprised to discover that this wasn’t the case for Oliver.

ICO Warns Kids About Social Networks’ Side Effects
ICO Warns Kids About Social Networks’ Side Effects
by Anne Shaw
On Friday, a British privacy watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office, announced the findings of a recent survey...
Surprisingly or not, more than 70 percent of people aged 14 to 21 would not want a potential employer to read the information they posted on a social networking web site, while more than 60 percent of them do not think that this information could be “found” by the online search engines. What’s probably even more risky is that young Internet users accept persons they do not know to become their “virtual friends”; no less than 70 percent of young people seem not to be concerned of strangers seeing the information they posted.

The future of social networking is creepy
The term “creeping” is fondly used to describe friends in your social network (like facebook) who don’t actually communicate directly with you, but who know everything about you.
This is because they have been checking out your profile page, looking at your last set of vacation pictures, comparing their social calendar with your event page and looking at the newest applications you’ve installed on your profile.Forward/Share This Article With Colleagues And Social Media:

Mapping Crowds and Data
from Jay Deragon's blog
Relationship Capital...
The prolific growth of social networks and related activities is creating a rich pool of data for business purposes. For example, Facebook’s Ad Marketing program, which shares news of users’ online purchases, is seen as revealing private information. The purpose of the Facebook ad marketing program is to bring on line advertising to the next level by providing rich targeted data about user preferences and affinities to products and services.
Reactions to the sharing of what is labeled “private information” has created a flurry of opinions within the blogosphere and mostly negative. However, most of what we as individuals do on the web has been mined for years and our “private information” has been exposed for a very long time.
Jay is also a contributing writer for The National Networker. Visit his page titled "What Say You?"
