For those who know Harvey, he's a quiet, unassuming guy...until you get onto his favorite subject: "creativity"...then you can't get him to stop! I found Harvey's enthusiasm for creativity as strong as mine for networking...and he's just a lovable guy. It was for this reason, I asked him to write a column for us combining our two favorite subjects and thus his monthly column, "Creativity in Networking" was launched in October, 2005 and it's been a regular mainstay of TNNW since then. He was reliable, getting me his article well before the deadline every month. I knew something was up this past month, when I never received his usual contribution, and it wasn't until a few days ago that I heard in an email message from his wife that he wanted me to know that he was in the hospital and could not get anything to me this month. Needless to say I was, and still am concerned for my friend and wish he and his family my sincerest wishes for his speedy recovery. So for all you Harvey fans out there, please join me in saying...CAN'T WAIT TO HAVE YOU BACK HARVEY!!!
When I started The National Networker back in February, 2005, I knew I had a decent idea, but had no clue as to how it would really look three and a half years later. In fact, the very first issue had no articles whatsoever! The following month, though, I felt compelled to write something and I did, but it wasn't until August that I realized that TNNW was bigger than myself and allowed others to join me. One of my first writers was Harvey Mathason.

The Art of Managing Yourself
“Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of.”
- Benjamin Franklin
Everything in life happens in a framework of time. In order to network effectively, you need to have the time to network. The most important thing for you to do is to establish a meaning in life, to establish a mission, and to create something you love to do. Your mission becomes something you organize time around.
One thing to realize is that time management is not the goal. No, you can’t manage time. You can only manage yourself. Before mentioning the details of managing yourself, I would like to say that management should not be overly-rigid. You should spend a portion of the day being spontaneous, having fun, and doing things you love other than work. Of course your time should be balanced between work, family life, and time spent with your friends.

Creativity in NetWorking
By Harvey Mathason, Contributing Writer
Six degrees of separation is a concept promoted by the actor Kevin Bacon. It means that if a person is one “step” away from each person that he or she knows and two “steps” away from each person who is known by one of the people he or she knows, then everyone is no more than six “steps” away from each person on Earth or a population of 6.6 billion people.
My son Brian is a member of an Honorary Society that meets to have dinner with astronauts. He has a plaque with their signatures. I noticed two, Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell. Buzz Aldrin is the second man to land on the moon and Jim Lovell is the person honored in the movie Apollo 13. Jim Lovell invited Tom Hanks, the star of the movie, to his home. Although the information I learned about Lovell is minimal, it’s certainly information that I am highly unlikely to learn on google.
For whatever it’s worth, I was delighted to think I was only one degree of separation away from the second man on the moon and the astronaut responsible for the Apollo 13 movie. Knowing me would then place you two degrees of separation from the second man on the moon and the astronaut responsible for Apollo 13...
