UK: Networking Activity on the Increase

by Dave Clarke
UK Bureau Chief

'Recession lifts social networking site LinkedIn' reported Fortune magazine recently. The article reports Linkedin making profits and quotes Charlene Li, founder of the research outfit Altimeter Group saying "The number one way you find a job is through referral and LinkedIn is the biggest referral network out there,"

Activity on the big social networks and media like Facebook and Twitter is increasing rapidly and that is reflected amongst UK users. I am asked repeatedly "How do I use Twitter & Social Networks?". To answer some of the questions I have written '10 tips for building business with the effective use of offline & online networks' and developed a seminar on the subject.

Just click on the Logo above for a no-strings TEST DRIVE

So is the demand for 'offline' networking keeping pace? I can report that the demand in our own network is increasing and I hear the same reported in recent conversations with people I know running other UK groups including BRX, BNI, 4Networking, and BoB Clubs.

A good indicator is the increase in number and activity on some UK based websites and events promoting the different styles and opportunities for networking. To paraphrase Charlene (above). The number one way to generate business is through referral and networking groups provide the biggest opportunity to do that.

To check out UK wide networking opportunities and find the best group for you visit the following sites.

Business Scene which features networking and business events. Search by postcode to find events locally or when you are on the move.

My Networking PA lists networking events by region or sector.

find networking events lists by region & town/city.

Good Networking!

When It Comes To Referrals, Quality Beats Quantity…Hands Down!

Networking Success

By Ivan Misner, Ph.D., Contributing Writer

While it is indeed true that you want to get a good number of referrals, it is true only up to a point. Taking it to the extreme, you can get as many referrals as you could conceivably handle, but if nearly all of them are of low quality—hard to close or not very valuable when closed—you’re no better off than if you simply sat at your desk and spent all day cold-calling. The same is true if you get so many referrals that you can’t handle them at the level of quality and professionalism your prospects and your referral sources expect.

Of course, at the other extreme, you might get too few referrals to keep your business healthy and growing. You might close a high percentage of them and provide top-notch service, but if you’re not getting new referrals, your business may be stagnant and in danger of starving.

Where you want to be is somewhere between these two extremes. You want a decent number of referrals, but not more than you can comfortably handle, and you want to be able to close a good percentage of them for substantial amounts of business. You also need to have the time and the ability to turn marginal referrals into high-quality referrals using your sales skills—and this is something you’re not as capable of doing if you’re desperate with worry about the number of rejections you’re chalking up.

Women Are Doing Business, Building Connections by Networking in the Northern Plains

By Robert Stanke, Northern Plains Bureau Chief Robert's Bio Email article RSS feed Share on facebook

It is no secret that it takes some serious networking and relationship building to build and successfully run a business anywhere in the world. Business owners need buyers (repeat buyers are the best) and the way to get them is to get their name out there among peers. What amazes me is that different groups of individuals have really banded together to advance business dealings, and relationships, over the past 20 years. Minorities, veterans, and perhaps one of the biggest of these groups – women, have made huge advancements in networking to both win business and build lasting professional relationships. During the course of my research, it was absolutely amazing to see all the websites, tools, networking groups, and services that business women are using to advance careers and bottom lines.

So this month, I wanted to take some time and share with you how women in the Northern Plains are doing business and building connections by networking. I will share some thoughts from Wendy Kram, the owner of Entrespect, Inc., who I got the opportunity to share a cup of coffee with. Wendy is among those who are helping women business owners advance in the marketplace, and she had interesting viewpoints to share with The National Networker. Finally, I have gathered some great links to some of the wonderful organizations that put a focus on women and networking.

NY Xpo for Business Show

By Ruth Gatling, Mid-Atlantic Bureau Chief Email article RSS feed Share on facebook

On November 28th I traveled into Manhattan to go to the 2007 NY Xpo for Business Show at the Jacob Javitz center. What a show! There where about 600 booths and over 30 free seminars. As a matter of fact, the show itself was free. That’s right, no admission fee.

The event started with the New York Times kick-off breakfast with keynote speaker Michael Rogers, New York Times’ Futurist-in-residence. He spoke about the advancement of technology, the challenges and opportunities for small and mid-size businesses to take advantage of the technology to get in front of prospects and customers and what to look forward to in the future.

Small Group Has Big Mission

By Glen Gould, Southeast Bureau Chief

Glen's Bio Email article RSS feed Share on facebook

If you were to bring together business and community leaders in a small group setting and provide breakfast in a convenient and attractive environment, one might argue that you would have the recipe for a successful business networking organization. If you added interesting and knowledgeable speakers and packed the program full of opportunities to meet people, learn skills and grow both personally and professionally, you’d have an atypical networking group. But add in a mission, something that the entire group could focus on and you’d have an extraordinary opportunity. In short, you’d have the Atlanta Community Breakfast.

The Atlanta Community Breakfast is a network of individuals who are interested in exploring issues of success, personal leadership, and life-balance as they relate to our personal, professional and spiritual lives. It is a weekly breakfast in a convenient, attractive location where business and community leaders can grow in their faith and mentor others while networking with and meeting like minded individuals.

Still Don't Believe You Can Monetize Networking?

According to a recent article in "Advertising Age" Magazine, a recent analysis was done by PQ Media stating that marketers spent $1 billion on Word-of-Mouth Advertising in 2006. 2006? That was last year!

The article later goes on to state that a recent Nielsen Global survey of over 26,000 people showed that 78% of the participants relied more upon "recommendations from consumers". This number was 15% higher than newspapers; the second most trusted source.

What does this mean? Aside from the obvious fact that the advertising/marketing industry is moving away from traditional forms of advertising, it also means that the companies it serves is doing the same. Are you one of them?

Most experts agree that the current business-scape is changing rapidly, leading to corporate anxiety for some and amazing opportunities for others. At TNNW, we will continue to keep you posted on the latest developments in the emerging Relationship Economy.

As always, I look forward to networking with you...

Networking with Skype

By MIKE O'NEIL, Technology Editor

There is nothing quite like a story that is hot off the grill. That would be this one and I think a lot of people can relate to the problem – your cell phone goes out on an important out of state business trip. What do you do?

At Integrated Alliances we do business networking events and communications are the key to having everyone be happy about the outcome. A lack of communication can sink an event very quickly and can do so in front of lots of eyeballs. What happens when...
