KENSEL TRACY: The Aboriginal Human Resource Council is Good For Business in Canada

by Kensel Tracy

When one talks with Aboriginal Kelly Lindsey,MBA, the President and CEO of the Aboriginal Human Resource Council,(AHRC) you can’t help but marvel at what Kelly is doing for Aboriginals in Canada. The AHRC is responsible for getting employers in Canada to consider hiring Canada’s Aboriginal people in a variety of industry segments. These industries include: forestry, banking, mining, the oil industry and other industries all across Canada.

The who’s who of Canadian companies such as Royal Bank of Canada, Bank of Montreal, Cameco, SNC Lavilen, Syncrude, TD Bank, CIBC and IBM all are working the council to help train, develop, hire and build an Aboriginal work force in Canada. With over one million Aboriginal people now living and working throughout the country the AHRC has a mission to break cycle which has stereo typed Aboriginals throughout history and now provides opportunities for Aboriginals to enter the workforce and make meaningful contributions in helping organizations to grow and prosper.

The council was formed in 1998 as a national not-for-profit organization. Today, as a thriving social enterprise, it is a national Canadian based organization based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, with a mandate to advance the full labour market participation of Aboriginal Peoples in Canada and Indigenous Peoples around the world.

AHRC products, services and networks are designed to help organizations understand the value of inclusion while advancing workplace strategies. Their transformed workplaces position them to become employers-of-choice for the growing and diverse supply of well-trained, highly motivated Indigenous workers. AHRC programs also help members of the Indigenous community obtain essential skills, design career paths and get connected to inclusive employers.

AHRC pursues a mandate and conducts its business through connections, partnerships and mutually beneficial solutions that build bridges between the business, union, Indigenous, education and government communities. AHRC also has a proven track record as an ISO 9001:2008 accredited organization that is proud to deliver service excellence and leadership in Indigenous workplace inclusion.

To support the various programs, Federal and provincial government partners invest in AHRC’s work through applied projects and research to advance the many facets of inclusion. AHRC has a growing group of Leadership Circle partners includes leading Canadian and international companies that are committed to Indigenous workplace inclusion – forging new solutions with the council.

AHRC’s Leadership Circle partners access the organization’s products and services to develop inclusive workplace practices and share these among the peer network. They also act as a sounding board for new product development and important human resource issues and trends. Along with its governance champions and board members, they play an active role in the organization’s strategic direction to build a more inclusive world; starting in the workplace.

The AHRC also has a charitable arm that raises funds to advance Aboriginal Peoples in Canada and Indigenous Peoples in the world of work.

When Networking, Don't Be The Mouth

By Danielle Lum

Hawaii Bureau Chief

I was invited to attend a meeting. There were about 15 people there, of which I knew maybe three people. A great networking opportunity ever I've seen one!

The beginning of the meeting was open networking around a tray of sushi, shrimp and chips and dips. In networking fashion I met people, made connections and traded business cards.

I met some very nice people, and enjoyed the give and take of "what do you do?" and "how is your business doing in this economy?"

Enter The Mouth.

We all know The Mouth. You know, the person who won't stop talking about him or herself. How many times have we wanted to run, screaming, in the other direction when we see The Mouth coming? I know I can't count that high.

Anyway, I was in a two-way conversation when The Mouth edged her way into our sphere. We were talking about our businesses and people we knew in comment; there was give and take. She listened to me. I listened to her. It was quite pleasant actually.

It all changed when The Mouth joined us. The conversation switched to The Mouth. What The Mouth does, how great The Mouth is, how The Mouth single-handedly whipped Hawaii's economy into shape. I swear she didn't take a breath long enough for either of us to speak.

I was happy when the meeting got started because I finally had a way to politely excuse myself from The Mouth.

True to form, though, The Mouth dominated the meeting. She told of her experiences, viewpoint, and opinions. It was exhausting, and actually lengthened the meeting by at least 30 minutes. I could see rolling eyes around the meeting table as The Mouth droned on and on.

So today's lesson is simple: Don't Be The Mouth

Networking is about making connections. Finding what you have in common so the next time you see the person you're positively memorable. It means talking, asking questions, and more importantly, listening to the answers. Let the person you're connecting with be part of the conversation. Be a participant in the conversation, not the dominator.

You may be great at what you do, or you might be the expert on the topic of conversation. However, bombarding others with your brilliance at a networking function will earn you The Mouth status. If you really need to make a point or feel your insights or expertise would be valuable for the person with whom you are talking, arrange a follow up meeting or coffee.

You will make a better first impression and you'll get a second chance to make a connection.

I find that the people who leave me with the best impression are those who can hold a balance conversation. They ask as many questions as they answer and talk as much as they listen. It's easy to talk with them. Effortless. Connecting is easy because they make it easy to do so.

The choice is yours. Do you want to be The Mouth or leave a favorable impression.

Networking with the Better Business Bureau

By BETTE DAOUST, Ph.D., Southwest Bureau Chief Bette's Bio Email article RSS feed

When you think of the Better Business Bureau, what comes to mind? Probably a place for consumers to place their complaints and a place where businesses answer those complaints. You are also likely to think about the benefits of being a Better Business Bureau member such as credibility. But did you know that this is rapidly changing in many aspects? Did you know that the Better Business Bureau is rebranding and some of the initiatives will better serve businesses? It is starting to be evident across the US and Canada, however, there is one Better Business Bureau office that is really striving to make big changes to connect and help the small business. I am so fortunate to be a part of the Golden Gate Better Business Bureau and work with them in connecting businesses.
