Jon Ingham & Social capital

from Jon Ingham's blog "The Social Business: Social capital"
& his book

Strategic Human Capital Management: Creating Value Through People

Social or relational capital is an emergent property arising from the organisational system – the organisation and the people working in the organisation. Social capital includes the network of relationships and features of social life within an organisation, the knowledge tied up and shared in these relationships, the ability to work together with other people in value creation, the corporate culture, beliefs lived and values demonstrated by employees. It provides the glue that holds organisations together.

Web Addiction...

MOKCHEON, South Korea -- The compound -- part boot camp, part rehab center -- resembles programs around the world for troubled youths. Drill instructors drive young men through military-style obstacle courses, counselors lead group sessions, and there are even therapeutic workshops on pottery and drumming. But these young people are not battling alcohol or drugs. Rather, they have severe cases of what many in this country believe is a new and potentially deadly addiction: cyberspace

Deconstructing the business social network

Written by Bernard Lunn / November 20, 2007

I am the wrong age for Facebook or MySpace. But I happen to have a relative who is in the LA music scene, who gave me a tour from his perspective - and now I totally get it. A few decades ago that is where I would have hung out.

I am not looking for a social network. I cannot imagine choosing one single place as my only online hangout and I certainly don’t want the hassle of managing my identity and my relationships on multiple sites. However I am interested in how different tools give different pieces of the social networking puzzle; and what ties them together.

When I wrote about LinkedIn compared to Facebook, some Facebook enthusiasts pointed out that messaging within Facebook is better. I think that is true, but I don’t want to use messaging that is controlled by a site - and I think that is true for most people who grew up with the Internet before social networks evolved. It may be nothing more than habit, but habit matters a lot for adoption.

Leveraging Business Connections

As we continue to study the evolution of the social web for business evidence is all around us. While previously indicating that much of what we had found indicates the early stages of adoption additional evidence is beginning to appear which indicate a much larger comprehension of the opportunities for the social web to add significant value to the “business of business”.One of the benefits of a networked world is that friends, associates and like minded individuals feed one thinking and perspectives with references from around the net. Michael Pokocky was kind enough to send us the reference below:

The December 07 Edition of Scientific America just published an article titled “The Semantic Web In Action: Corporate applications are well under way, and consumer uses are emerging” By Lee Feigenbaum, Ivan Herman, Tonya Hongsermeier, Eric Neumann and Susie Stephens

“Six years ago in this magazine, Tim Berners-Lee, James Hendler and Ora Lassila unveiled a nascent vision of the Semantic Web: a highly interconnected network of data that could be easily accessed and understood by any desktop or handheld machine. They painted a future of intelligent software agents that would head out on the World Wide Web and automatically book flights and hotels for our trips, update our medical records and give us a single, customized answer to a particular question without our having to search for information or pore through results.”

Looking from the Outside In

from Jay Deragon's blog

As we examine the possibilities for business to leverage the medium of social networking we find numerous perspective that are limited to obvious silo opportunities. While there are certainly obvious benefits to use social networking for specific business functions the mediums functionality and feature capabilities have the potential to touch and enhance every business process and all relationships across all segments globally.

Businesses are just discovering the systemic nature of the medium and the media continues to drive home the message within business circles. Jennifer LeClaire of TechNewsWorld writes “The phenomenon of social networking for business purposes is a logical extension of personal networking. After all, businesses are merely people linked by common economic purpose, said Barry Kessel, managing director and chief client development officer at global marketing firm Wunderman.”

LinkedIn May Be Bought By Owner of MySpace

from Jason Jacobsohn's blog Networking Insight

LinkedinRumor has it that News Corp, owner of Facebook, may be buying LinkedIn. This would be very interesting if this happens because LinkedIn does compete with MySpace for social networking.

A big differentiator is that LinkedIn is strictly for professional networking while MySpace is more for networking with friends. LinkedIn definitely has a more serious side while MySpace is more fun.

Factors of the Relationship Matrix

from the blog corpuz

Factors of the Relationship Matrix

We are entering into a subject matter that is wide and deep. In our initial research we found little reference to a Relationship Matrix in context to the emergence of a networked world other than references to the movie the matrix.

As such this subject matter covers a series of analysis in context to the emergence of the relationship economy. The new economy is being facilitated by convergence of technological mediums aimed at enabling transactions of economic value through relationships.

First the definition of Relationship defined as connection or association; the condition of being related. Second the definition of Matrix defined as something within or from which something else originates, develops, or takes form. And third the definition of Factors defined as elements which actively contribute to the production of a result.

You may be a community freeloader...(a great Social Capital discussion)

"You May be a Community Freeloader if you..."

Balancing Your Social Capital Accounts

Now, I don’t want to reduce every interaction we human beings have with another person to being a transaction, but, in effect, it is. If I ask a friend for a favor, she is bound oblige. However, if I ask that same friend for ten favors, she may start to feel like I’ve depleted my ‘allowance’ on my account with her. Of course, with different people, we have more leeway. With our close friends and family we have loads of Social Capital to withdraw from and as our relationships get more casual, the less influence and favor we carry with others.

Safety Net-Workers Don’t Burn Bridges

Power Thought of the Week

By Patricia Parham, Ph.D., Contributing Writer Pat's Bio

Safety Net-Workers Don’t Burn Bridges

Occasionally, we get into sticky situations with people. Our tendency is to want to be “right” and make the other person “wrong.” Sometimes, it is more important to salvage the relationship, at the cost of not claiming “right”, even when we are. Oftentimes, it’s better to apologize, even if the other person’s perception is flawed. It takes a confident and secure networker to let truth speak for itself.

Networking Success

Success is Not Measured by the Number of Network Meetings You Attend

By Ivan Misner, Ph.D., Contributing Writer Ivan's Bio Email article RSS feed

Referral networking is more about farming than hunting! An overemphasis of running from one networking event to another looking for new relationships is a waste of time, money, and energy that you should be using to develop the relationships you’ve already started. It’s like running around knocking coconuts out of trees, when you should be planting coconut trees for the future. When we train people to network, we surprise them with one of the first things we tell them: Stop networking for a few moments! Stand still, look at what you have, prioritize it, database it, cull it, and then, rather than continue to work on only the “V” part of the VCP ProcessTM (visibility, credibility, profitability—see Business by Referral by Misner and Davis), devote more time to the “C” and the “P.” Credibility comes with a closer, deeper relationship, and profitability is the goal that can be maintained only through constant nurturing of that relationship for mutual benefit. It’s not “Nice to meet you; now I’ve got to go talk to someone over there,” it’s “How are you doing, and how can I help you achieve your goals?”

Vaulting Beyond Heavy Political Walls

By Ann Barczay Sloan, Women’s Networking Editor Ann's Bio Email article RSS feed

An extraordinary entrepreneur’s adventure

Some folks enjoy keeping up with major players and latest happenings in politics or finance or sports, or the arts and show biz in all its varieties. Though I too follow some of these - for several years I’ve also been fascinated with the innovations and pioneering men and women in the Internet Marketing field.

One day, an unusual story came to my attention. In one of the well-known marketers’ blogs I read about a remarkable young woman - only age 20 or so - who lives in Iran and yet has managed to start her own internet marketing enterprise and has already achieved a measure of success. And all this in spite of being a woman in an Islamic country, having to learn and work fundamentally on her own, plus being hampered by restrictive government regulations. But now her story was out and other IM writers were raising quite a viral buzz about this young entrepreneur over the internet.

I’m fascinated – and determined to find out more!

I quickly subscribed to Ladan’s newsletter, eager to see her information products and also to learn of her latest activities. My curiosity was piqued as I wondered what her daily life in that repressive environment might be like. I especially wondered how she had managed to succeed this far - in spite of the strictures on individual and business activities imposed by the current Iranian regime.

In a flash I decided an interview with Ladan would be a great piece for readers of The National Networker. I also realized that obtaining such an interview to begin with would be (in my humble opinion) a great coup for myself as a writer and TNNW Women’s Networking Editor.

It turned out to be really simple: I wrote Ladan and asked if I could interview her via e-mail. As I see (from her writings) that she’s a great a believer in the power of networking, I knew the magic word “networking” would get her attention!

Ladan responded quickly and graciously. She answered my questions openly – and I am happy to share them with you, our TNNW readers. So – here we are!

As you read her words, you will remember that English is not Ladan’s mother tongue – yet she communicates clearly and with great confidence. I have deliberately not changed her “voice” nor edited out the charm of the way she uses our language.

Networking with Heart

By Linsy Guerrero, Social Networking Editor Linsy's Bio Email article RSS feed

Networking can be beneficial for many obvious reasons; to gain contacts, earn new business, make friends, seek employment, just to name a few. There is a reason that some individuals network that is not often discussed, perhaps because it is networking in an uncommon form. Plain and simple, it is networking for a charitable cause. The social networks that come together for charitable organizations and events create an enormous community of their own, combining so many other established communities already. They bring together people of different genders, religions, ages, ethnic backgrounds, socio-economic status, and regardless of the differences, everyone is their supporting a cause (and usually one very close to their heart). I had the fortunate opportunity to take part in an amazing event for the first time recently this year. For those of you who have never had the chance to participate in one of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3 day walks around the country, I would like to take you inside one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

The Story of the Eagle... and Change

By Candy Webb, Network Marketing Editor Candy's Bio Email article RSS feed

I had been thinking about the topic of “change” as a fitting piece for one of our upcoming articles, because as with most successful business ventures, in network marketing some personal change in skill set, organization and discipline must occur to reach the top. And then just as these things frequently occur, I heard a story that made it all come together. Many of you know I have been very involved in Women’s Empowerment Workshops over the years, and last weekend was the fourth such event this year in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I was asked to speak on Developing Business Leaders in Network Marketing. The speakers were all wonderful, some really useful points were made and I hope we sparked a “change” for the women there. One presenter used a story I had heard many years before but never had written it down (which was a mistake) and I was delighted to get it again. It’s a true story, the story of that great American symbol – The American Bald Eagle. As you read this, FEEL the power of change.

SF New Tech Meetup

By Lydia Sugarman, Entrepreneurial Editor Lydia's Bio Email article RSS feed

I’m a dedicated entrepreneur; more specifically I am a dedicated Internet entrepreneur. I think we can all agree that the Internet, the World Wide Web, and all the attendant “toys” have profoundly altered the way we connect with people, build relationships, and do business. Everything from email, IM, and Skype to Facebook to the hardware to access these tools have insinuated themselves into the fabric of our daily lives.

One thing never changes and that is the relationship itself that we build with each person we meet. When we “meet” someone through LinkedIn or via an email introduction, the desire, the need to connect with that other person is very basic, instinctual.

This goes toward explaining why people in the Internet industry create so many opportunities to get together in the physical world. All the conferences, pre-parties, post-parties, Meetup, Lunch2.0, Spontaneous Drinking, and then, there’s SF New Tech Meetup every month which kind of combines all the above and more.

A Gold Star for Networking

By Peter Biadasz, Southern Plains Bureau Chief Peter's Bio Email article RSS feed

It is so much fun meeting networkers who want to take their networking lives to the next level. Beth Davis, founder of Gold Star Referral Clubs, is taking herself and anyone who will follow to higher levels in the business networking arena. She and her husband, Todd, assistant area directors and seasoned networkers who had been area directors for an international business networking organization. They were recognized for inviting the most visitors for their organizations as well as for speaking talent and were instructors for networking success programs. Wanting to take their networking lives to the next level they found themselves one day networking with Rob Bandy, CEO of SearchtheNation.com. Rob asked Beth, “Why don’t you start a networking group yourself? We can list them on Search the Nation… I can put a little gold star by the names of all the members.” That was the moment that Gold Star Referral Clubs went from thought to concept. A few months later, it became a reality.

The Inspired "Sub"

Inspiring NetWorkers

By Mark Sturgell, Great Lakes Bureau Chief Email article RSS feed

So you have joined a networking group, paid the dues and made the commitment to attend the weekly meetings. But you soon realize that you cannot attend every week - a key membership requirement. What now? Can you find a substitute - a "sub" - to go in your place? What does that mean, "in your place"? What should it mean? Is finding the "right" sub something you should treat lightly? Do you belong to a networking group that requires attendance? I hope so. Without regular attendance you cannot really be a good referral source, friend or anything else. Without shared time, space and information others cannot really know you, and they won't be very good referral sources, defeating your purpose for joining. How should others measure your commitment to the common cause if you are not present and if others cannot depend on your active participation?
