LASTING IMPRESSIONS: Michael Jackson Died Today, June 25, 2009

Lasting Impressions with Sian Lindemann

I don’t often speak about the super “star” complement of artists, for as today, it is often such a wide gap between those who are emerging and someone like Michael Jackson who has been triumphant at the “top” of his game.

There is “often” no way one can actually relate to the plight of someone so extremely gifted.

The uniqueness of an artist like Michael Jackson is so rarely achieved. And thus, why is it, when someone like him achieves the “golden ring” is it so hard to remain in a position of “elite status?”

We, as humans, are the problem.

Currently, we aspire, as a culture, to achieve success, joy, creative self- expression, individualism, freedom, and we revere those who achieve that position…Then why is it, that once particular individuals achieve that status, we attempt to drag them into the mud. It is clearly the 180 degree opposite and define the worst qualities of mankind, rising to the surface to diminish someone like him, via greed, fear, lust, and the rest of the seven deadly sins.

I am personally not a “bible thumping” religious person. But it seems every person through out history who has achieved a state of operating in “inherent” goodness, is crucified.

Jesus, Buddha, Ghandi, Martin Luther King, John F Kennedy, John Lennon, Elvis, and lastly, Michael Jackson. Certainly there are others who have achieved, fame and success in a variety of different endeavors, and in this case, the arts.

I am reminded today of the bible quote and I will have to paraphrase….”First we must become as little children, before we can enter the kingdom of heaven”…..Michael Jackson did, a true “pure heart,” as I, for one, do not believe that any of the accusations imposed on Michael Jackson, were true.

I believe that greed and envy were the intentions of those that accused him of misbehavior…I do not know, I do not care. Acquitted in a court of law, Michael Jackson walked free. Who are human beings to judge him so harshly, where for 40 + years, Michael Jackson was an inherent sound track backing up each of our generation’s existence, influencing music, dance, media, video, movies, and interracial acceptance.

I am so terribly saddened today, not by the fact that Mr. Jackson has found peace, but by the ongoing and continued media frenzy that follows him even after his death.

Peace on this earth is found not in the ability to have like -mindedness…but in acceptance and reverence of the essential need for differences. It is the only way in which we learn from one another, the value of our humanity, the value of the earth on which we reside, and the extraordinary gift, of which we are a part, called “life.”

Extended Thanksgiving, 2008 – Make a Wish

By Sian Lindemann Arts & Entertainment Editor

Make A Wish… IMMEDIATE RESPONSE REQUESTED

When we were still days away from celebrating Thanksgiving 2008, I was grateful already. In fact for the last month or so, I have been giving daily thanks for the apparent breakthroughs I am having in my business and in my services provided to my clients….AND in the sales we have developed for them…..i.e., LOTS of art sales, in what appears or is being spirited as a really bad economy.

I am smiling A LOT.

I HAD a planned topic for an article for this month, but after a 90 minute “mind altering” Educational Teleseminar, with Master Mentor Alex Mandossian, I am changing this month’s format, and making a request.

I want to open the platform to ask YOU, our readers, to think about, and to respond to the following…

1) DO you have more prospects than paid customers on your list?”
2) DO you wish to monetize those prospects into paid customers?
3) WOULD you like me to show you how to do this in 90 minutes or less?

If your answers to these questions are “YES!’, than I invite you to participate in a FREE TELESEMINAR that will assist you to define HOW to go about creating the kind of results you wish to achieve as an artist.

If you would “wish” to participate and have the opportunity to attend this FREE TELESEMINAR, then I make a simple request…

ASK me a question. Ask me your burning, and passionate question, from which selected questions will be answered on the FREE TELESEMINAR.

Email your questions to Sian Lindemann at Sunstar@q.com before the close of business (Central Time) on December 18th, and you will be automatically invited to attend this FREE TELESEMINAR, co – produced and sponsored by THE NATIONAL NETWORKER.

By the way, it's not really a network if I don’t allow you to network within the network, so please… Join me……You will be advised of the date and time for this FREE TELESEMINAR, by private invitation…and I look forward to “seeing” you on the call.

Thank you so much for participating with THE NATIONAL NETWORKER this year and I wish you the BEST and most abundant extended Thanksgiving and holiday season.

What Role Does Mentoring Play in Your Networking?

By Terry Bean
Social Networking Editor

How did you learn how to network? Who helped you figure out which social networking websites are worth your time? Do you ever see someone committing networking "sins" and guide them to a better networking future?

It is said that “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear”.

Networking comes very naturally to some. Others find it the most challenging portion of their business development activities. Let’s not overlook all of the flavors in between. The same phenomena exist in the online networking world too.

The better we all get at networking, the better all of our networking will be.

I recently sat in a referral marketing class as a student. It was interesting to be on the opposite side of the teacher/student relationship. I have been formally teaching networking skills for nine years. This was the first class I had taken on the subject in seven. I was there and open to learning some new things. Guess what? I actually learned.

I think for many of us it is harder to be the mentee as opposed to the mentor, especially once we have achieved some success. Have you ever met someone from whom you couldn’t learn anything new? (The correct answer is no).

If you are a face to face networking expert, please offer to help those who aren’t as good. Maybe setup a quick class, write a blog post or do some one on one time. We always talk about “givers gain”, this is but one more opportunity for you to give.

For those folks who spend most of their networking time online, this may be a great chance for you to connect more locally. Additionally, this may be a great way for you to share your online expertise with someone who will make good use of it.

As I look back at the evolution of my networking career there are several people I would like to thank. Fortunately, I am nice so I shall save you a lot of time and cull the list drastically. From a face to face perspective, Frank Agin of www.amspirit.com In Columbus, Ohio had the biggest impact on me. Thank you, Frank. On the online front, Vincent Wright has helped me see the path. Thank you, Vincent. It is because of the knowledge I have gained from these two men that I get to thank the 1900+ members of www.motorcityconnect.com. Thank you all.

So, I want to know, hopefully, we all want to know. Who shows you the path AND to whom are you showing it? This is your chance to help all of our networking efforts.

Defining Moments, Part 1: “The Art of Networking Art”

By Sian Lindemann
Arts & Entertainment Editor

“Bob Emser is an international sculptor, having shown on 4 continents, 7 countries and in 27 states in the U.S. His extensive body of work, dating back to 1978, can be seen in cities and municipalities, sculpture parks, museums and institutions of higher learning. During his 30 year career he has served as a visiting artist and has taught at several universities, held a tenured professorship, and founded a not-for-profit art center that is still in existence. He has also served as executive director of Chicago’s international sculpture exhibition, Pier Walk. Currently he is the president of Chicago Sculpture International, the local affiliate of International Sculpture Center, on whose Board of Directors he sits. Emser focuses his full time efforts creating sculptures for public and private places.”

Artist / Sculptor/ Bob Emser

The Defining Moment

Bob Emser has no problem in maintaining a constant stream commissions. He is booked two years in advance, and from our conversation nearly two months ago, he talked with me about “The Defining Moment” that changed his life and his career.

While for some years living in a “state “ of reverence for artists he admired, respected, and wished to emulate, Bob remained in awe and in separation from those individuals.

Bob made a command decision.

It was at this time that he rented a tux, hopped a plane, and placed himself in the room of those sculptors who were being featured and were gathered at a major event in New York City. The event, was the (ISC) International Sculpture Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Now he was one AMONG those whose lives and works he had admired. It was a significant change in his thinking.

If he wanted to be considered as one of the best, he had to mingle and associate with those who were considered the best, and become a “peer.”

http://www.sculpture.org/documents/awards/life.shtml

He is a member of the ISC and that is how he got invited to the event, and anyone can attend who is willing to pay the $500 a plate fee.

The first year was 2003 and he has attended every year since. He is now on the Board of Directors of this organization.

It changed his life. No longer separating himself, but becoming an active participant in this organization, and interacting with those whose achievements and talents he revered, he had become known and is now equally respected by those same people.

And look at the work….It IS spectacular.

Prairie Wind 2 / Bob Emser

The Art of Artist Networking

“Networking events for artists are merely a forum for meeting people and establishing relationships – what you do from there is really up to the artist. It’s unrealistic to think that you’re going to sell your art just by being part of a professional arts association.”

“The key is what you do with the relationships that you develop, how your cultivate them, and the process is a slow one. It may take several years for a relationship to turn into an art sale.”

“Unfortunately, many artists are not taught to foster these types of relationships – they need to learn the process. Here are a few tips…

  • Don’t just join an organization, BECOME a part of its leadership
  • You have more impact by being the person inviting the speaker than by sitting in the audience.
  • Keep track of your “touches” with a person you want to build a relationship with (It never happens from just one !)
  • In order to be counted you have to SHOW UP. Attend Gallery openings, conferences, and receptions.”

No Limit / Bob Emser, Sculptor

Leadership in One’s Industry

The conversation with Bob Emser continues to support the advocacy that I have stated over the last year and a half, writing for The National Networker.

Be IT now. It really is up to the artist to command their career, and as a teacher, mentor or leader in one’s industry, it offers many more opportunities to the individual to have access to those that can help one forward one’s career.

Clear Solutions for the Blue Planet...tm

Clear Solutions for the Blue Planet…tm

By Sian Lindemann, TNNW Arts Editor

Courtney Milne…Earth from Space?

It is evident that a significant trend is present as it relates to marketing. The desire to create an advocacy of some kind that supports ECO-ART, a GREEN directive, or an environmental cause, is not only popular but is also a needed endeavor. Who better to demonstrate this end result than the artists themselves, who I believe have an intimate connection with the “spirit” of the earth, its plight, and thus, give voice to the cause of preservation of our natural environment.

Most artists that I have worked with over the years, have expressed in some way, a desire to demonstrate the quintessential connection between man and nature.

It is primarily a good thought. The actualization of that thought needs clear understanding for the viewer through the imagery.

It would be possible for each artist to identify this agenda as it relates to “tag” lines or “slogans” as it relates to a particular body of work, and by the way, all necessary to “TRADEMARK” with one’s attorney.

“Clear Solutions for the Blue Planet”, is just that kind of reference, and is a project of the National Living Arts Foundation.

“Clear Solutions” is an advocacy on the power of perspective. While viewing the image, above, “Earth from Space”…there is an automatic assumption that the image is indeed a photo captured from aboard the space station or a shuttle mission. However, it is an image captured by artist / photographer, Courtney Milne and Courtney has never been a part of the space program, of course. The image is actually a photo of the Canadian landscape, taken with a fish eye lens, and turned upside down.

It offers a direct challenge to the viewer to “consider” an alternate perspective, if only through art, the image clearly defines, that changing one’s perspective is as simple as turning an image in an alternate way. Or changing one’s mind, a very simple act.

In Courtney’s “Pool of Possibilities Collection,” 35,000 images depict that one subject may have a number of alternative views….each are beautiful, each are unique, and each are valuable and “essential” to “entire” collection.

In the thought of how one might participate in our global concerns for “ending hunger,” “preserving wildlife,” conserving “water,” and the like, how might you consider your next body of work, your next installation, your next art exhibition, to include these considerations?

It is a direct question that I ask our readers to consider.

If you Google Masaru Emoto www.masaru-emoto.net , Japanese Scientist and author of “Messages from Water,” you will discover the scientifically proven studies of Mr. Emoto, in reference to the structural changes that occur with simple prayer over waters that have been documented to have been polluted.

It is a rather miraculous study. In the words of Masaru Emoto, “One man cannot change the world but one man can deliver the message to change the world. We believe it is 'The Message from Water.'”

It would be worthy of your time to investigate this perspective, for in the future delivery of your art forms to market, what additional considerations could you have to inspire this kind of thinking?

We are asking the same question, with “Clear Solutions for the Blue Planet.” If thought and prayer can literally change the structural component of water crystals, then what impact can you have in your thought, action, and art forms to perpetuate this kind of new thinking?

The reaction of the waters is not a new process. It has always been with us….but for humanity to have garnered understanding of human impact on our earth, then we can change the way we think, how we take action, and undeniably have an impact on positive transition into preservation of our natural resources, water being one of the primary necessities for our ongoing existence here on earth.

“Clear Solutions for the Blue Planet” is asking of our readers a similar process….what can you do? What can you create, artistically, to demonstrate this thought as it relates to the preservation, conservation, and purification of waters on earth, one, so that there is always enough, and secondly, that it is always available in a pure form for our consumption.

“Clear Solutions for the Blue Planet,” is willing to be a project that will promote, sell and represent artists who can create a clearly defined representation of this consideration…How does your art identify, for me, and for the viewer, an absolute understanding of the “messages from water.”

Networking among our readers I would like to receive content for this program that we can utilize as a promotional and fundraising program, to create the following

1) Funding that underwrites water based programs that will create new technologies, or provide sources of clean water to developing countries

2) Sculptural Design for public installations of water feature based art, sculpture and water “fun” features in parks and public venues throughout the world.

3) Art works, jewelry, glass, sculpture, photography, film, or music, that clearly identifies this desired result, and offers clear perspective on what is possible.

4) Anything else I have not mentioned here, nor have I thought of, but that you have “dreamed” up.

I look forward to hearing from each and every one of you…and I thank you for your willingness to participate in “Clear Solutions for the Blue Planet.”

The Year for Social Responsibility in the Arts

By Sian Lindemann, TNNW Arts Editor

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all of our readers at The National Networker. I hope that you had a most delightful holiday season, and that you look upon the new year, 2008, with refreshed motivation.

Courtney Milne Productions Fine Art Photography
“Carefulness”
From The Pool of Possibilities E Calendar

I am thinking differently about my articles this year, provided to The National Networker. Looking back over the collection of past articles, I attempted to provide access, description, and reference to those artists, painters, photographers and the like, who are garnering a significant income from their work. I also provided the insight and methods on HOW they achieved those results.

Those articles and that information has NOT, markedly increased readership of The Arts and Entertainment Department at TNNW….and I wonder why.

If I were an artist needing edification as to “knowing” that income can be produced in this industry, and if networking among specific arts organizations, is not how any of 2007’s artists have secured their success, then I would ask you the artist, WHY you would not subscribe to our publication to be made aware that financial success in very attainable in this industry.

It only provides the assumption that “income” and sales are not the primary reason that one wishes to have a career in the arts. Income is a bonus to actively pursuing one’s career, yet the discovery that income as a primary result is not very often what motivates an artist to produce.

I picked up two books over the holiday, and wish to share their source with you. Both had a profound impact on my thinking as I enter 2008. The first is a book that was published in 1991 and is titled…

“The Re-Enchantment of Art” by Suzi Gablik

The author, Suzi Gablik speaks specifically to the following need.

“Suzi Gablik's book Has Modernism Failed (1984) described an enervated contemporary art scene. She depicted the post-modernist art world as one in which the revolutionary impetus of modern art had degenerated into a market-driven form of parody and calculated indifference.

In The Re-Enchantment of Art (1991) she puts forward the more optimistic idea that there is indeed hope for the future, but it depends on the spiritual and ethical renewal of our culture, including 'a revitalized sense of community, an enlarged ecological perspective, and greater access to the mythic and archetypal underpinnings of spiritual life. '

Re-reading this in 2007, one has to wonder how much progress has been made towards this 'spiritual and ethical renewal of our culture.”

I find it interesting that in addition to Suzi’s concern to consider the complete spiritual and ethical renewal for our culture, she also speaks about the need to find a “socially responsible” reason for which to create and sell original works.

“I JUST love it when I discover new information that is now advocated in a recently published manuscript, something which I have been advocating for 30 years.” Sian Lindemann

The other book that I discovered is titled,

“Jumping Through the Hoops, Autobiographical Stories by Modern Chinese Women Writers”
Edited by Jing M.Wang

On the other side of the spectrum, here is revealed, and I have only read the Introduction, the reflection of a number of women, who as recent at 1945 were not even able to write in the first person, relative to their “life stories,” based on the culturally imposed limitations regarding personal freedom in the Chinese culture.

We are so incredibly lucky here in the United States, with the freedoms we experience, and that we so readily take for granted, to pursue and to actualize our “individual” dreams and ambitions….and we are so spoiled as to the treasure that is to do so.

So in light of these two discoveries, two great texts, fabulously probing questions, I am dedicating the New Year’s roster of articles to those artists, groups and methods who advocate Social Responsibility, the pursuit of spiritual renewal, and those whom take significant risk in so doing.

Wishing you a most delightful New Year.

Networking with Non Profits

By Sian Lindemann, Arts Editor
Sian's Bio Email article RSS feed Share on facebook

AHA !!!

I have long been an advocate that artists ARE “the bank”. The artist might be on the verge of starvation, broke, living simply, eating badly, or anything close to what we call the compromised edge, AND if a Non Profit organization asks them to donate a painting to an auction that will underwrite a fundraiser for a Children’s Hospital, an arts education program, a cancer research center, or as in the case with Hurricane Katrina ... the artists from New Orleans traveled around the country playing the traditional music for which New Orleans is known, purely to raise money for their own home town. They did not have to be adopted, placed, housed, fed, or anything like that ... they are a resilient group of people and that is one of the major reasons that I JUST love them all so much ... the artist always finds a means to procure what ever is needed. It’s just that state of challenge that encourages them to create, and to continue to GIVE.

In the case, with being asked to donate a painting ... and being completely broke, the artist finds a way to procure the canvas, the paint, the framing, AND they deliver ... The work is often, auctioned for a lesser price than the value of the work ... Hmmm?

I’ve seen it happen many, many times. It continues to blow my mind, especially knowing what I know, and knowing HOW to procure sales on behalf of an individual artist, and their unique works.

So, I decided to do something about it ... One artist at a time.

I have recently engaged a contract with Courtney Milne Productions, and artist / photographer Courtney Milne ... (see Past Articles, Courtney Milne, Photographer As Mystic)...

Living Arts National Foundation

By Sian Lindemann, Arts Editor Sian's Bio Email article RSS feed

In the wake of September 11, 2001, Sian Lindemann struggled to place a higher purpose, some sense of explanation, to the unimaginable tragedy. Like many Americans, and indeed many citizens of the global community, Sian sought to create a positive result out of the stunning disaster.

A lifelong artist, Sian knew the potential impact of beauty on individuals, on communities and on the world. Artistic expression transcends logic, defies explanation and extracts our inner-most held beliefs and values. Art compels ordinary citizens to commit acts of remarkable generosity and selflessness. Art levels the playing field, revealing in even the most diverse groups commonalities in spirit and mutual regard for the human experience.
