PEOPLE, POWER AND POSSIBILITIES: Networking Isn't Just for Sales People

People, Power and Possibilities with Donna Fisher

Sure, networking is a vital sales tool for connecting with people to create a pipeline of sales prospects. However, everyone from executive assistant to computer analyst can utilize networking to be more effective with their work.

What if you thought of your organization as a series of interconnected networks rather than a top-down hierarchy? Imagine that you and every other individual in the company is the center of his or her own network, which interconnects with countless other individuals and their networks. The resources available throughout a corporate network provide effective ways to address issues, solve problems, create new initiatives and network with others in different departments, different locations and even different divisions.

When people relate to one another as part of the same network and work for the good of everyone and the overall business goal, then they are more likely to get together to talk through ideas, build positive relationships, share certain skills and resources, and produce powerful results.

What happens when you start to think of your company as a network of individuals rather than a hierarchy of jobs? Do you start to relate to people differently? Do you start to have different conversations geared around topics that lead to enhanced results? Do you feel more comfortable calling on others for help and support?

Networking within a company involves sharing best practices, brainstorming for great solutions and being resources throughout the corporate network. Networking is an important productivity skill for everyone!

PEOPLE, POWER AND POSSIBILITIES: Listen Up!

People, Power and Possibilities with Donna Fisher

True listening creates connection! Not the kind of listening where you're partially hearing what someone is saying while thinking about what you're going to say. Listening creates connection when you give your full attention to someone and are mentally engaged in what they are saying.

True listening requires the ability to focus on someone else and give up being self-focused or self-oriented. The mentality required to be a true listener involves the following:

A. Give people delighted attention. Whether you agree with what someone is saying or not, imagine simply be pleased to be in conversation with them to learn more about what they think and feel.

B. Be curious and interested in knowing more about the person and you will be just naturally more engaged in the conversation.

C. Don't rush people. Be patient and show people that they are important and that you really do want to hear what they have to say.

D. Stay present to the conversation. It is very easy for the mind to wander; and yet, very important to stay focused.

E. Pick up on the non-verbal communication so that you can understand all of what's being communicated.

F. Listen for an opportunity to be of service. Rather than just listening "to" someone, listen "for" information that will help you better understand how to be a resource for this person.

I don't believe that people are inherently good or bad listeners. Instead, I believe that it all has to do with our habits. Enhancing your listening skills is as simple as integrating some of the ideas from above into new habits in your way of being with people.

It is through listening that you connect. People in our culture are hungry to be really heard and will really appreciate someone who truly listens.

PEOPLE, POWER AND POSSIBILITIES: Where You Hang Your Hat

People, Power and Possibilities with Donna Fisher

When you're in job transition and didn't choose to be, it can be difficult to see the positive side of the situation. And yet, I have seen so many situations where a job loss led to a great new opportunity. Job transition is the time to reflect, reidentify your career goals, and use the job transition to move forward with courage and conviction.

When going through a job transition, remember that who you are as a person has not changed, even if your work status has. The only thing that's changed is "where you hang your hat". You are still the trained, skilled professional with experience and value. Don't let what is going on mean something that it doesn't, don't lose your sense of self, don't apologize for the situation and don't over explain the situation.

Maintain your professional confidence and strength. Compnies merge, downsize, are bought, close and reorganize all the time. When that happens and you end up out of work, it's not personal. And it's not necessarily bad. Look for the opportunity. Brainstorm with friends. Explore ways to use your talents and skills in new and different career paths. Be open to new possibilties as you network with people.

Don't take a job transition personally and don't let it change the confidence, self-esteem, and self-respect that you have for yourself and your skills.

PEOPLE, POWER AND POSSIBILITIES: Give It Up

People, Power and Possibilities with Donna Fisher

At our "Women Who Rock" event last week, women were asked to give up the things that hold them back. Because if you're going to "rock" then you've got to give up holding back, downplaying your strengths, and doubting yourself.

Give It Up! Give up the hesitation to follow your heart. Give up the negative self-talk that is habitual useless chatter. Give up speaking words of disempowerment (to yourself and others). Give up hiding, downplaying and dismissing your magnificence!

We can only be of greatest value to one another when we truly value ourselves. When you truly value yourself, you will naturally share more of what you have to offer with others. When you truly start making powerful connections, your world will rock.

I saw this happen. As women began to "Give Up" the things holding them back and began to focus on their strengths and skills, they began to stand more erect, approach people more confidently and speak more assertively. They began to share information, ideas and resources that truly made a difference in each other's lives. They became energized and alive.

The things that get in our way are typically "habitual" thoughts and behaviors that have become so ingrained that we think those thoughts and behaviors are us! But they aren't. They are simply thoughts and behaviors. They are thoughts and behaviors that we can "Give Up"! And we can choose new, more productive, more empowering, more authentic thoughts and behaviors that have us stand tall, speak up and be powerful resources in our communities.

Being a Woman Who Rocks is about showing up and speaking up, honoring your strengths and skills, being a source of positive energy in the world.

If you're going to rock, you've got to "step up to the mic" and give it your all!

PEOPLE, POWER AND POSSIBILITIES: Word-of-Mouse Networking

People, Power and Possibilities with Donna Fisher

Word-of-Mouth marketing has always been one of the best ways to get information passed along so that prospective customers feel confident and compelled to use your products and services. And with today's technology, word-of-mouth happens with the "click of the mouse" as your message is sent to thousands at a time rather than just from person-to-person, one at a time.

Rather than real-time conversations, "word-of-mouse" relays information into a virtual world of prospects. In the "blink of an eye", your message is available to a vast network of people.

Word-of-mouth is about getting people to talk about you (in a positive way) and "talk" now happens through blog postings, tweets, and postings on social media sites.

So how do you create a "word-of-mouse" chatter that spreads throughout your virtual networking community?

Educational Blog Posts:

· Educate people regarding how to use your product and/or service to get the maximum benefit.

· Educate people by providing information on what's happening in your industry.

· Educate people by providing information on what's happening in your business.

"Personal Touch" Blog Posts:

· Share a story regarding something that you've learned, a challenge you've faced, etc.

· Share a story that sheds some humor on an opinion and/or situation.

· Share a story of how a customer has solved a problem or overcome a challenge with your product/service (with their permission, of course).

Photo/Video Blog:

· Post a video of your product being used successfully.

· Post a video of your product being used unsuccessfully and explain what went wrong.

· Post videos and photos of customers and their accomplishments.

· Post videos and photos of vendors and their products.

· Post videos and photos of employees!

Tweeting:

· Do all of the above in only 140 characters.

· Send tweets with links to articles and blogs that provide value to your customers.

Social Media Sites:

· Educate, share, entertain and provide value by posting messages, events, photos, and links, joining groups, and generating online discussions.

Other:

· Post comments on the blogs of other people in your industry and in your network.

· Create value.

· Be interested and interesting.

· Respond to what others are "talking" about in your communities.

· Recommend the products, services, books, apps, blogs, articles of others.

· Rather than promoting and selling, share with people what you're doing that's new and different, innovative and leading edge.

· Educate people with tips and information related to your industry and their needs.

· Share experiences and tell stories that people can relate to and learn from as well.

Ads can definitely help to get your "name" in front of people, and yet it's someone's endorsement, recommendation or sharing of a positive experience that often makes the ultimate difference in someone choosing to do business with you. And the way to generate more "word-of-mouse" chatter is to create memorable, positive experiences, provide exceptional service, offer a solution to a unique need, provide an updated "twist" to an old remedy – and share this information with your virtual network.

The flow of networking information is more fast and powerful than ever via mouse-to-mouse networking!

PEOPLE, POWER AND POSSIBILITIES: The Mystery Business Card

People, Power and Possibilities with Donna Fisher

I found a business card in my pocket the other day and I have no idea where it came from and no idea who the person is. There are no handwritten notes on the card to give me a clue as to where I got the card. Because there are no notes on the card, I tend to think the card was given to me without a chance for me to interact with the person. I don’t like it when that happens because I know that I missed out on an opportunity to connect with someone.

Passing out business cards is not networking. Connecting with people so that we can be resources for one another is networking. Business cards are the tool that we use for exchanging information so that we can follow up and stay in touch.

Rather than passing out business cards focus on gathering information and connecting through conversations, By connecting with someone first, the business card exchange will be more meaningful and therefore remembered.

Generate an interesting conversation and listen for an opportunity to be a resource. Tell the person what you can do for them and then ask for their card so that you can follow up with them.

Example: Regarding your music project, I know someone that could be a good resource for you. If you’ll give me a card, I will get back with you with her contact information.

Be a conversational networker and have the business card exchange fit into the natural flow of the conversation.

Example: That’s interesting. What you’re looking for sounds similar to the products offered by Jane Doe’s company. I would be glad to have her give you a call. Do you have a card handy?

If you do want to give your card to someone, let them know why.

Example: You mentioned you send out an email newsletter. I would be very interested in your information. If I give you my card, would you add me to your list?

Tip: Don’t pass out business cards! Focus on making connections, gathering information and being a resource. Then the exchange of the business card will feel natural and will be meaningful. And then your business card will never be one of those mystery business cards that shows up in someone else’s pocket, purse or briefcase!

PEOPLE, POWER AND POSSIBILITIES: You Never Know . . . Until

People, Power and Possibilities with Donna Fisher

I'm one of those people who "like to know". I like to know what's going on. I like lots of information. I like to know the "why" behind the "what to do".

And yet with networking, one of the things that I like is that "you never know"! You never know:
  • Where you might meet someone who can be a great resoure and/or customer for your business.
  • Who might turn out to be a great resource and/or customer for your business.
  • When a conversation might lead to a great new opportunity and/or lead.
  • What you might be able to offer someone that could make a huge difference in their life.

And you'll never know what's possible until you:
  • Engage in conversation with the people all around you.
  • You ask people for help, support and information.
  • You listen for opportunities to be a resource for someone else.
  • You stop prejudging others and take the time to get to know them better.
  • You are open to new possibilities.
  • You stay aware of the people all around you.
  • You are willing to accept the support of others.
Networking is living with the awareness that new contacts, opportunities and possibilities can appear at any moment - and you never know ahead of time when, where or who!

PEOPLE, POWER & POSSIBILITIES: Are You Asking the Right Questions?

People, Power & Possibilities with Donna Fisher

Networking weaves together listening, offering, thanking and, of course, asking – asking for leads, referrals, contacts, information, support. It's all about knowing how to ask, when to ask and most important to ask the right questions. And the right question is the one that is easy for someone to respond to and give you valuable information.

Tips for asking:

Initially ask questions that help to put people at ease (a question that is easy to answer).

Typically ask open-ended questions that help to generate interaction.

Ask for support once you have developed rapport or offered support.

Ask when you are able to have the other person's full attention.

Ask while respecting their time and availability.

Ask "Who do you know who . . . " questions (rather than "Do you know anybody . . . ?"

Ask with specificity (rather than making a request that's so broad it's difficult to respond).

Ask with enough information so that people can respond and without overwhelming people with too much information (give people a chance to ask for more information if they need it).

Ask with clarity and confidence (don't beat around the bush and don't use guilt or manipulation).

Get in the habit of asking so that it flows easily and naturally.

Remember that asking someone for help or support is an acknowledgment of them (it shows that you value their support).

Ask for contacts in your target market but don't expect people to qualify your prospects for you. Ask people how you can be of help to them.

Ask in a non-demanding, assertive manner so that people can feel good about "choosing" to respond.

PEOPLE, POWER & POSSIBILITIES: New Possibilities

People, Power & Possibilities with Donna Fisher

Whether it's a new year, new month, new relationship, new day or even a "new" moment, it's an opportunity for new possibilities. It's easy to keep doing the same things we've always done. It takes an open-mind and sense of adventure to step into "the unknown" and pursue a "new possibility".

Creating an idea for something new takes innovative thinking. And innovative thinking comes from asking the kind of questions that "stir up" your thinking. Our minds get in the habit of just lazily thinking the same thoughts over and over. And those "same ole" thoughts don't produce any new, innovative results.

So stir up your thinking. Ask yourself:

· What might I do if I lived like "anything's possible"?

· What are 3 unreasonable ideas that could help me grow my business?

· What would I be willing to let go of (thoughts, beliefs, behaviors) in order to be open to new possibilities?

· What would I love to pursue (as a hobby, career, etc.) if only I thought it was possible?

· How could I add "new twist" to what I've been doing to make it more unique, exciting and memorable?

There are no right or wrong answers to any of these questions. And there are no required actions to take based on the answers. It's all an inquiry. It's an exploration into your thoughts to stir things up and create and uncover some new energy, ideas and enthusiasm. It's so easy to get focused on the answers that we have, when what's really important are the questions that we are willing to ask ourselves as a way to explore new possibilities.

Awareness Leads to Learning

People, Power and Possibilities with Donna Fisher

Awareness is always the first step towards growing and learning. Becoming aware of something that you want, something that you don't want or something that you wish were different, gives you valuable information for taking steps to make the desired changes in your life.

Being aware includes being in touch with your feelings, desires, the people around you, and the opportunities available to you. Awareness can move opportunities into possibilities and then into realities.

Awareness is about being conscious, being present, and being in touch with what's going on in the moment at a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.

Be aware of:
What you could change that would enhance your life.
What you could change that would enhance your work.
What fears, concerns, and "mental roadblocks" get in the way of you expressing your full brilliance
The nudges and inklings that can guide you in making wise choices.
How to connect with people more quickly and easily.
The people in your network and how you can be of support.
How vast and powerful your network is when utilized effectively.
The natural human desire to connect and contribute.
Each individual as a network of connections.
Your ability to contribute to the people that you come in contact with on a daily basis.
The power of your speaking to direct a conversation in a positive, productive direction.
The vast, unlimited and organize nature of your network of people.

Magic Words

People, Power and Possibilities with Donna Fisher

Words are very powerful. And yet I often see people being very careless with their words and thus missing out on opportunities. Be selective, thoughtful and picky about choosing words that convey the right kind of energy to engage people and create positive experiences.

Here are some "magic" words to include in your conversations:

"Oh, by the way" is an easy way to transition conversation into a request or a more productive topic.
Example, "Oh, by the way, I wanted to ask you about . . . ."

"I just had a thought" is great when something someone says truly triggers an idea in your head.
Example: "A few minutes ago you mentioned . . .. I just had a thought that Jane Jones would be a good contact for you and here's why . . . ."

"Would (instead of could) you help" conveys that you are asking for the person's willingness (rather than their ability). And by using the word "help" you are actually tapping into people's natural, desire to be of help and support.
Example: George, I'm in the process of . . . . Would you help me with . . . "

I believe that, in general, people want to help. They want to give and contribute. Sometimes it's all in how you ask, though, that influences their response. Practice using these "magic" words to make requests that trigger a positive response.

The Flip Side of the Hurricane

People, Power & Possibilities with Donna Fisher

The hurricane had not even reached the shore when people started reaching out to help each other. An employee from the other side of town stopped by to help board up our windows. My neighbor called from out of town to see if I would check on her place. Numerous phone calls (especially from my Mom in North Carolina) and emails came in prior to the arrival of Ike and lots of text messages (many phone were not working) during and after Ike.

As a result of that NATURAL desire to help others in need, Houston and the Gulf Coast area had people arriving from all over the country to help our area recover. And individuals from this area showed up all over town to hand out supplies, assist with clean up (anyone with a chain saw became very popular) and answer the telephones at the "help lines". Neighbors (who hardly ever even see each other) helped each other clean up the debris and get their lives back "in order".

Sometimes the magnitude of our networks is fairly transparent until a crisis or need arises. But the main thing is that when there is a need, we do think to reach out to one another – to ask for help, to offer help or simply to let someone know we're "there". The good nature, compelling spirit and fortitude of human beings makes for a powerful network of support.

Social Fun Leads to Natural Networking

People, Power & Possibilities with Donna Fisher

I noticed that I was "busy" with work and life all the time and not spending quality time with friends. I was really missing feeling connected with my friends. So I scheduled a couple of get togethers; one for my women friends and one for the members of a former networking breakfast club.

In fact, I decided to revive our networking breakfast club (which many of us had belonged to for over 10 years) as a virtual networking club (yahoo group) with quarterly social gatherings.

All it took was one conversation during my quarterly visits with my financial advisor, "It sure would be great to get together with everyone from Windsor Club." Her response was "It sure would". She offered her home. We picked the date. I sent the evite and we had a wonderful event with the chance to catch up and reconnect. And now we've planned another gathering.

For my gathering of women friends, I picked a place called Path of Tea (here in Houston, Texas) where the owner conducts tea tastings for groups. I scheduled the date and time. Again, I sent an evite. And some wonderful women friends showed up for a lovely afternoon of learning about various types of teas and learning about what each other was up to in their own lives.

It's been my experience that as we bond socially, we then open doors to opportunities for each other in all areas of life. And I learned that I can create simple, easy events as a way to see my friends, have fun, feel connected and maintain my friendships (personally and professionally).

So, rather than always going to events, how about hosting your own event for some of the people with whom you really want to stay connected? Don't let networking always be about "business". Create events, opportunities and environments for connecting socially, having fun and being with people you enjoy.

Beware the "Lone Ranger Mentality"

People, Power & Possibilities

By Donna Fisher
Contributing Writer

The "Lone Ranger Mentality" is an attitude of "I can do it on my own". This mentality gets in the way of your effectiveness by limiting the ideas, contributions and support of others. And, oftentimes, the thoughts, actions and behaviors represented by the "Lone Ranger Mentality" are just habits that you have developed over time. And because they are habits they can be upgraded to new, more productive habits. Here are some suggestions for shifting your mindset to create a more interdependent and productive approach to life.

Think about other automatic limiting thoughts that you have that you could shift for yourself:

By developing new "thought habits" you will change your actions, behaviors and way of relating to the world. We are here on this plant together to be of support to one another. Everyone's heard the phrase, "No man is an island" and yet it is still easy to keep ourselves isolated and disconnected. However, your power comes from your ability to connect with others to make a difference. Give up any and all of the "Lone Ranger" thoughts that may be lurking around in your consciousness. Trade it in for a more powerful, productive and fun approach of being interdependent, connected and inclusive.

Respect Yourself

People, Power & Possibilities

By Donna Fisher, TNNW Contributing Writer

Someone once said, "People do business with people they know and trust." I've always said that it's easy to "meet" a lot of people. However, the important thing is to CONNECT with them and build trust. So, let's review what it takes to develop trust and connection with people:
  1. Listen and really hear what they're saying, connect with what they're saying, see if you can relate (in some way) to who they are and what they're saying.
  2. Be sincere. Be real. Be respectful. Don't embellish, over promise or say nice things to manipulate or look good.
  3. Be honest with your words and actions. Be a person of integrity and do what you say you will do. This is the quickest way to generate trust. Show people that they can count on you for what you say.
  4. Be sincere. Express how you care about people by being truly interested.
  5. Respect people by speaking in a positive and constructive way regarding others. Do not participate in gossip or sharing information inappropriately.
  6. Be appreciate and respectful of the trust that people place in you.
  7. Respect yourself because that's where it all starts. The more you respect yourself (your values, talents, etc.) the more natural (and automatic) it is for others to respect you. Your respect of self creates an energy field that attracts respect. Also when you respect yourself, you have less need to have your attention on yourself and you have more attention and energy to give others.

Follow Through – One Day at a Time

People, Power & Possibilities

By Donna Fisher, Contributing

You've probably set some goals for 2008. Maybe you've even created a goals poster and/or developed your action plan. And yet some people are already off-track even though we're only half way through the first month of the year. What is it about following through with our intentions that seems to be so difficult?

Oftentimes it's because we just haven't developed and don't practice that "integrity muscle" with ourselves. When you say you're going to do something, does that really mean that YOU ARE GOING TO DO IT, or does it really mean that you'll "think about" doing it, do it if it's easy and convenient, or do it if you remember?

What if this year, you honored yourself by truly doing what you've said you will do – being your "word" with yourself.

Honor Your "Word" and Empower Your Results in 2008:

  • Be clear about what you say (don't make haphazard promises).
  • Be accountable to yourself.
  • Create a support system (or buddies) where you are accountable for doing what you say.
  • Document your promises and follow through actions.
  • Stop analyzing and judging yourself and just do what you say.

When you follow through on something that you said you would do you honor yourself. You strengthen your character, self-esteem and ability to produce results.

The power of a habit is about developing something to become a natural and automatic part of the way you think, act and/or behave...

People, Power & Possibilities: Drumming Up Dreams

By Donna Fisher, Contributing Writer Donna's Bio Email article RSS feed

On Sunday, October 21, 2007, 438 drummers gathered to play drumsets simultaneously at the Texas BigBeat. Our goal was to raise money for Cherish Our Children International and to break the current Guinness World Record for the most drummers playing drumsets simultaneously. Although we missed out on breaking the record (533 drummers), we raised over $15,000 for educational programs for at-risk children and it was an awesome experience of the power of people coming together for a greater good.

When all 438 drummers played "Deep in the Heart of Texas" there were some teary eyes all around the arena. And when some of the children that we were raising money for shared about their lives, there were even more tears in sight.
