Three A's to Entrepreneur Equilibrium | CONVEY YOUR MESSAGE

 Jessan Dunn Otis Convey Your Message with Jessan Dunn Otis

QUESTION: Entrepreneurs, is your "message" the only thing you're selling?

Step back from whatever you're selling - be it services and/or products - and take a hard, long look at who you are and what and how you're conveying your message.

Consider this - if you're a self-employed entrepreneur, everything you do, say, participate in and don't do, say and participate in conveys something about you, your business and your "message". In other words, if you are your business, you are your message.

Does this mean you always have to be "on"? No; and, yes. No; because being able to discern between "up time" and "away time" is essential to your work/life balance. Yes; because, if your passion is your business and your business is your passion, then some part of you is always connected to and focused on that passion and that business.

If this resembles you, what's an entrepreneur to do? Try these three A's to entrepreneur equilibrium.

* ACKNOWLEDGE - recognize and acknowledge that you require a balance between you, your business and your public and private life

* ACCESS - access your needs, requirements and responsibilities and the needs, requirements and responsibilities for your business

* ACT - act upon what you've learned about who you are and how you are and what's needed to sustain your equilibrium and your business equilibrium

What say you, please?

Introducing Eric Lowitt, Jessan Dunn Otis and Tony Humphrey | A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER

Introducing Eric Lowitt, Jessan Dunn Otis and Tony Humphrey

by Adam J. Kovitz

Those of you who have been reading The National Networker Weekly Newsletter (TNNW) for a long time know that we don't like sitting on our laurels.  We are always pushing to find better ways to bring you better, more relevant stories related to entrepreneurship, independent business ownership and emerging enterprise.

Why?

Because it's the entrepreneurial thing to do!  We must always continue to challenge the status quo, even if it's our own.  It's not only what makes us special, it's what separates us from our big business counterparts, which is why we drive innovation, jobs and stability and they don't.  And, yes...I am proud to say that!

I am also proud to introduce three new writers to TNNW, each with their own unique styles and areas of expertise.

First up is Eric Lowitt, TNNWC's Strategy and Sustainability Senior Advisor and noted speaker and author who has been published in Forbes.com, Business Strategy Review, the Journal of Business Strategy, Inside Supply Management, and Corporate Governance, as well as news wires, industry publications and other media outlets.  Eric is the author of the upcoming book, The Future of Value (Jossey-Bass, October 2011).  Eric debuts his new column this week; Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and The Future of Value with an article entitled "How to Keep Ahead of Sustainability's Twists and Turns".

Next is Jessan Dunn Otis, who I affectionately call the "Garrison Keillor of Rhode Island".  Jessan works as a freelance writer and publicist and has been an Adjunct Professor and Visiting Lecturer/Artist at Bryant University, Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island School of Design, The Cambridge School and other institutions.  As a published poet since 1987, she's had readings at Brown University, Villa Serbelloni, CAV, Writer's Harvest and other venues.  It's as an independent business owner and entrepreneur that she debuts her new column Convey Your Message this week with the article "What's your Message?  Who's your Audience".

Lastly, we have Tony Humphrey, a.k.a "The Top Hand" at TheTopTravelClub.com, a discount travel club, much like a Sam's Club or Costco for world travel.  Once a Chartered Accountant, Tony's passion for travel and leisure led him to connect with several international entrepreneurs who own their own destination spots in his new line of work, which he will be focusing upon in his new column The Business of Leisure and his article "Introducing the Business of Leisure".

Just to sum things up, June has been a tremendously, busy month for us at TNNWC, beginning with the launch of our new website, and culminating with three new writers.  There are plenty of more surprises in store for you over the next several weeks, so please do stay tuned and tell your colleagues about The National Networker.  They'll be glad you did.

Who says things slow down in the summer?

All my best,

Adam

Your Entrepreneurial Leap-Idea: Back to Basics | CONVEY YOUR MESSAGE

 Jessan Dunn Otis Convey Your Message with Jessan Dunn Otis

Maybe you thought you were going to be a mechanic or a doctor or a teacher or a whatever-it-might-have-been. Nevertheless, here you are; and, you're trying something new.

Perhaps someone else planted the thought or the idea or the possibility. Or, you've been down-sized, passed over, left behind, offered an early retirement or, simply, "let go"; and, you still have to make a living - right?

Another scenario might be that you've done what you've been doing for "x" amount of time; and, now it's time to take your leap-idea and venture into brand new territory - to become an entrepreneur.

* Now what?

To respond accurately to this question depends upon what it's going to require to make that leap of yours land in the right place.

Sometimes it can all fall into place almost effortlessly. Sometimes it can take years of batting your dream against a dry wall where not much seems to stick.

* Where to begin?

Quick answer: begin at the beginning. Seems obvious? Perhaps, however, it's not so obvious. Sometimes you're going to have to find your way back to the genesis of your entrepreneurial vision. If that's what you have to do - take notes. Keep a journal, notebook, folder or whatever it takes to gather and hold all those ideas that circle and accumulate around your leap-idea.

* What then?

After you've generated enough synthesized information, you might pass your ideas by a few valued friends, relatives and/or business confidants. Listen to them. If you feel they're offering constructive advice, opinions and points of view - take more notes. If you feel they're offering destructive criticisms - stop taking notes; but, consider their points of view, as well. Even "destructive criticisms" can have value.

* Next?

Let your entrepreneurial leap-idea, all notes and advice rest for awhile. You've begun to do your necessary work. Take a break. Do something completely different. Part of your mind will still be dwelling on all that you've done. However, you've earned some time off.

* ...and, after that?

Continue to integrate, to research, to clarify and to focus your vision until you feel and believe that you've asked enough questions and have enough pragmatic answers and evidence to take your next steps.

Some consideration might be: are you going to bootstrap your new entrepreneurial venture (all the glory and all the risk); or, are you going to look for an angel investor or take out a loan?

Begin to develop a basic business plan, a mission statement, your goals, objectives and more formalized business venture documents.

Through these initials steps, you're learning how to begin to talk about, think about and to move your dream into reality. Throughout this process you're, also, learning how to begin to create the entrepreneurial "vehicles" to convey your message to the right folks, in the right terms to continue to pursue your dream and to be able to make your entrepreneurial leap-idea come alive.

Either way, you've taken some essential steps to create your own new path. Sit back for a few and feel somewhat satisfied with yourself. But, don't sit too long - you've got a lot more work to do.

What say you, please?

Jessan

What's your Message? Who's your Audience? | CONVEY YOUR MESSAGE

 Jessan Dunn Otis Convey Your Message with Jessan Dunn Otis

Sit down and begin to pull together a business plan, mission statement, professional introductory e-mail, business-related text messages, informative YouTube clip - even making the choice for your business' name; and you're faced with three truths:

* writing isn't always as easy as it appears
* everything matters
* it's not only what you think you want to say; but, to whom, where, when, why and how

While any of the aforementioned endeavors can employ many mediums - i.e. video, film, radio, TV and so on - it's likely that, at some stage, writing is crucial to the process of creating your message. Brainstorming. Whiteboards. Drafting. Formulating. Final content.

With that in mind, recall the first time you were under deadline and staring at a blank piece of paper or that flashing indicator on an empty screen. Dwelling too long on that memory might (again) cause cold sweats and elevated heart rate. However, recalling that visceral experience can, also, be educational today.

What your body was (or, may still be) telling you is that you're invested in doing the work and hitting that deadline with your best shot.

To convey your message always takes planning and planning equals time - whether the amount of time is an hour, day, a week or, even, years.

Because you're invested in doing the work and hitting that deadline with your best work, everything (initially) matters. Do not edit your ideas and impulses. Be fearless. Be ridiculous. Be silly. Be serious. Be thorough. Eventually, you'll reduce your information to become the most accurate, clear, concise, creative and effective, according to your goals, intentions and audience.

Finally, the content and form/medium of your message must take into the 5 Ws + how.

* WHO - To whom are you conveying your message? Who's your audience?
* WHAT - What do you want them to know or learn or feel or do?
* WHERE - In what context/where are they receiving your message?
* WHEN - Why are they receiving your message?
* WHY - Why are they receiving your message?
* HOW - How do you want them to respond or what do you want them to do after receiving your message?

What say you, please?
