NETWORKING FUN FOR THE INTROVERTED: That's TMI

Networking Fun for the Introverted
with Wendy Kovitz

Twitter, what were you thinking? LinkedIn was supposed to be my sanitized cyber resume. My make-up, dark-colored suit and "Yes, I can interview with you at 11 am this Thursday" personae. Sure, it's always gotten the least of my attention. Probably because it's just so gosh-darn bland. Everything is so black and white there, just like a resume. You read a dozen of them and they all start to look alike.

But Twitter, be it 140 characters of utterly pointless drivel, poignant commentary or a juicy red-hot rant, is 3-D with smellovision. You know who you're dealing with and what makes them tick. Unless you only follow the "biggins" who are out to sell you something. I like people who can keep it real even over the expanse of cyber space. I enjoy hearing who's had a G-d awful day or who's laid up with the flu. Not that I enjoy the misery of others, but I find the willingness to share the good, the bad and the ugly with friends, strangers and stalkers alike so much more personable than a LinkedIn exchange. (Note that I am not talking about creepy and dangerous stalkers, merely those Google-happy people that find you much more interesting than you find yourself.)

If I like the line in the sand between professional and personal, why would I even think of using my Tweets to update my LinkedIn status? Well, first of all, you have the choice of shooting all of your Tweets red-robin right over. "No, thanks. Really. That's TMI." Honestly, I think it's my inner voice telling me that it's okay to embrace my uniqueness - for an introvert that's pretty scary stuff. It's okay to have an opinion on issues. Not everyone will agree with you or like you, no matter how hard you try. It's all the stuff we tell our kids but otherwise seem to ignore in our day-to-day existence.

Frankly, I'm getting a bit tired of maintaining a separate unique me in facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. My advice is simple: live your conscience, make your mark and everything else will fall into place.

I'll leave you with one link from a Twitter pal named @JimmyElliot, a young college kid who believes that love can change the world. He started @holdingofwrists to reach out to young people struggling with day to day existence, especially those battling depression. It reminds me that we're all connected, and that's a good thing.

NETWORKING FUN FOR THE INTROVERTED: The Applause Meter

Networking Fun for the Introverted with Wendy Kovitz

In the few short months that I've been active on Twitter I've seen some momentous Trending Topics like the Iran Election and Michael Jackson's death. Everyone had something to say and the system was often too crowded to get on to say it. Yet we persisted, feeling empowered to see ourselves as part of the bigger picture as history plays out before our eyes 24/7.

Ice Cream and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin"
For at least a day, "Ben & Jerry's" and "Hubby Hubby" made it onto Twitter's Trending Topics as the ice cream formerly known as "Chubby Hubby" was renamed in support of marriage equality. LGBT/Equality rights enthusiasts ate up the positive message. A few short days later,

"a new and not-so-subtle bit of gay bashing came in the form of the hashtag #uknowhowiknowurgay which immediately hit the top Trending Topic spot with commentary that ranged from the bizarre to the truly homophobic."- from "Twitter and Censorship"
Quickly, the LGBT community and its supporters countered with numerous Tweets of #Yaygay. That was until Twitter removed both hashtags from the Trending Topics as a type of censorship to keep the peace. All Tweets are still in cyberspace, but Twitter just isn't broadcasting their popularity.

There are many, many opportunities to be offended while using Twitter. It could just as easily be a Trending Topic on Blacks, Jews, Latinos, Catholics... Recently I caught Whoopie Goldberg on BBC's "Hardtalk" talking about use of the "n" word. Her opinion was "it's a word." Use it if you want, whether you're white or black, but "be prepared to face the consequences." Twitter, of all the forms of social media, is not for the faint of heart, but it begs the question of what, where, when, how and why we censor things.

Political Death to the Czars
Let me begin this by saying that I am not a political pundit, nor do I think most of the political pundits out there are qualified to spin life to suit their agendas. We're all human. We're all bombarded with facts, half-truths, lies and fantastical gibberish and have to make some sort of personal sense out of it. That's why G-d gave us brains and chutzpah. When we can get them to work in tandem, we're unstoppable. Otherwise...

It appears that the Left and Right have been cyber-slugging it out a lot lately about health care reform and President Obama's speech to our country's children. Both sides have been getting down to grass-roots campaigns to flood Washington with their political objectives. What I found most interesting was the allegation that one-by-one the Right wants to scrutinize each and every Czar appointed by President Obama, as in the case of Van Jones, and work towards supplying the muck needed to force them to resign or worse. At first look I was completely flabbergasted. If someone gets through the President's selection process, let the man or woman do their job without the constant backlash of disgruntled opponents who are working to slow down progress.
But there's never just a first look for me.

In Adam's last article "Understanding the Networking Revolution" he enumerates disciplines that are important to the understanding of social networking. Thanks to a recent Google alert, I came across Andrew Lehman's blog: The Evolving Now and I've been following his thoughts on physics and biology and how they apply to social media. Here are two quotes from "Speed"

"a powerful feature of this identity shift is one where the commons becomes highly valued and contribution to the community is revered... The communities of our youth are far more than the few people in a local tribe. Hundreds, if not thousands, of self-selected individuals, folks connected to massive self-selected networks of their own, are coming together."

“As the speed of information increases, the tendency is for politics to move away from representation and delegation of constituents toward immediate involvement of the entire community in the central acts of decision.” (Marshall McLuhan, Understanding Media, 1964, p. 152)

Can McLuhan's Tetrad apply to how we view democracy?
  • Enhancement: What the medium amplifies or intensifies.
  • Obsolescence: What the medium drives out of prominence.
  • Retrieval: What the medium recovers which was previously lost.
  • Reversal: What the medium does when pushed to its limits.

What if technology is really making it possible for every voice to count? On every decision? Could we as a people be moving that much closer to a true democracy where the sheer numbers define the course of the country at every given juncture? Is that empowering or terrifying? Maybe a little of both? What are your thoughts?

But wait! There's More...

Homeless and Tech Savvy?
This article is from InsideTech.com and talks about how job loss can affect any of us, and how one woman got around the subsequent loss of address to become a success story.
“Homeless people don’t use the Internet, they don’t write blogs, they’re not webmasters and they don’t use Twitter. They are alcoholics, they are substance abusers, they are illiterate. They don’t work. They sure as hell don’t have the right to fall in love. Do they?” - Matthew Barnes in "Homeless Blogger Scores a Job with Elle Magazine."

Sleuthing Time!
Another article from InsideTech.com gives us "non-creepy, legal" ways to "Stalk Your Way to a New Job" by familiarizing yourself with the man or woman you'll face in the interview using all of the social media at your disposal. Trust me, they're doing more than Googling you.

- Until next time!

A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN: World War III Breaks Out!!!

Sound the alarms and man the battle stations!

World War III has officially broken out this week and TNNW has the exclusive for you, our subscribers.

Unlike previous World Wars that were fought "conventionally" with groups of opposing countries on either side fighting each other in trenches with tanks, missiles and machine guns, over wide expanses of ocean with large mega-ton battleships blasting one another with their mega-ton guns, this World War is being fought on a radically different field of battle.

This field extends across the whole wide world and through our very homes and places of business. What's worse is that it is deeply infiltrated by terrorist who want to destroy our very way of life!

I'm talking about the recent attacks on Social Media sites like Twitter and Facebook by cyber-terrorists.

Okay...a bit dramatic, I know...but think about how far we have come as a society in just the past few years. When TNNW first started, most networking was still being done in person...face-to-face. LinkedIn was very new, eCademy was very new and both Twitter and Facebook weren't even in digital "in utero".

TNNW was founded on the premise that a networking revolution was coming and a whole new industry was about to be born. Okay...at least we got the revolution part right. The industry thing may just not have materialized, unless you call it media or advertising or Web 2.0, but you have to admit that networking has become a way of life - a culture - woven into our very fabric of society.

Which is why when hackers have worked to bring down two of Social Media's biggest powerhouses, I have to liken it to World War III - fortunately, so far, it's bloodless, and the "fightin'" staff at Twitter and Facebook have seemed to get things (mostly) back to "normal".

And while we return to our own simple ways of micro-blogging our deepest thoughts into 140 characters or less and sharing pictures of ourselves, our families and our pets with our friends, we can only wonder if it's the War or only the battle that's been won. More on World War III as it develops...

Speaking of Twitter, TNNW Author Douglas Castle wrote a wonderful article in last week's issue that bears repeating: Social Meteor Threatens the Earth. He has received many wonderful comments on it and we'd thought we'd share it again.

I have also received some wonderful comments on my own article last week: Ending Slavery in the U.S. and Abroad. I certainly welcome your thoughts as well.

Last week, we also introduced our newest writer Mike McClintock, with History Repeats Itself.

And now for something completely different...

...my wife of over 16 years, Wendy, whose article appears this week (Pan Historia), is one of the city coordinators of the first ever Great Nationwide Kiss-in: Philadelphia. This event is to support equality and is open to all who will be in the Greater Philadelphia area this Saturday, August 15th at Love Park, in Center City, Philadelphia at 2:00pm. Wendy and I will both be there - bring your loved ones and have some fun as we demonstrate a tasteful, yet public display of affection. Hope to see you there!

This week, it's a whole new slew of great articles for your perusal. More to come
this month...stay tuned!

As always, I look forward to Networking with you,

Adam

A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN: Disney Expat Joins TNNW

We have gotten a few reports that some of our readers using Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) are having difficulties reading our articles. We have done some considerable research on this matter and we have found that there are indeed certain incompatibilities between IE and Blogger (the service we use for our articles, and a product of Google). While we are hard at work to come up with a suitable work-around as the two technical titans continue to battle each other, we recognize this as a source of frustration to some of our valued readers.

We suggest the following until we finish some technical changes on our side:
1.) Mozilla Firefox is a wonderful browser, it's quicker than IE, more secure and our readers who use Firefox have had no problems viewing our content. To get Firefox (it's free), click here.
2.) Subscribe to our daily email feed. All of our articles (as well as valuable extras) come to you via email formatted specifically for your inbox. Click here for the daily email feed.
3.) Under the category of "it's cheesy, but it works", when you click on an article and it "boots you out" after loading, click the back button on your browser - the article will load again, and this time it should work. Sometimes you may need to do this 2 or 3 times. Obnoxious...yes...I recommend #1 or #2.

We apologize for any inconvenience and should have a suitable work around by August - we appreciate your patience.

Now, onto more exciting stuff...

Last week we introduced several new writers:
Leanne Hoagland-Smith -
Working Within
Sandy McKee - Speak Aloha and Let Your Voice Be Heard
Wendy Kovitz -
Networking Fun for the Introverted

This week, we are proud to introduce John A. Lee,
CEO & President of eventScheme LLC with his new column It All Starts With Us! John brings with him a wealth of experience, including 20 years at The Walt Disney Company as Executive Producer at both the theme parks as well as Walt Disney Studios. As an inductee into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, he is a regular voter and judge for the Emmy Awards. WELCOME JOHN!!!

And if that wasn't enough, wait until we introduce the last of this month's new writers. This new writer is, by far, the most mysterious writer we have ever allowed into our prestigious TNNW family. Furthermore, their column is going to make TNNW history as the scariest column to ever be published in our pages! To give you an idea as to how scary it really is, my friend, business partner and blood-brother-in-arms, Douglas Castle, has been spotted with beads of sweat upon his head at the mere mention of it.

Stay tuned...all will be revealed...we're going out in July with a bang...and perhaps a few scratches and bruises too. Who says we're not willing to "take it on the chin" for our subscribers?

As always, I look forward to Networking with you,

Adam

Murderous Twist on Social Networking

Many of you that know my husband Adam J. Kovitz well may have heard about his involvement in interactive Poison Pen murder mysteries produced by his parents Susan and Joel. While I've always been a lesser fan of the mystery genre, Harper's Globe has changed my mind.

For 6 episodes of the CBS mystery event Harper's Island I have been trying, quite unsuccessfully to put together the pieces and search for clues. While admittedly I am not even an amateur sleuth, as past film student I do have the (often annoying) knack for seeing all too quickly what the director is trying to get at, so by the time it is reinforced in the plot a few more times I feel like they're beating a dead horse. Finally I have found a show that keeps me guessing and asking more questions. After seeing a good number of the suspects meet their early demise I finally, as instructed in the commercials that my husband likes to fast-forward through, went to the Harper's Globe website.

"Who are these people?" I asked myself not recognizing any of the main characters on the pages. "Who the heck is Robin?" Well, I got over the initial shock of disorientation and marched on even though it was quite excruciating for me to watch the blog videos because my computer is ancient and needed to be resuscitated after continually crashing due to memory overload. Fortunately it was only a technical issue and pencil and pad in hand I persevered and, wow, it was hardly the same show!

I totally love what they're trying to do to create an interactive experience. Life is made up of so many points of view and the people that created Harper's Globe get that. Weary of an omniscient author or director creating a seamless account to lull you into complacency? At Harper's Globe you can find a wiki of character and plot information, profiles of the characters, shocking and provocative video and social networking with other fans. How cool is that!

No spoilers here. The past episodes are online, everything else will far exceed any expectations. Enjoy the technotainment!

Friendship: Virtually Speaking

There are many wonderful aspects of online social networking, my birthday post is (sort of) about one of them.

Before you get out the tissue box in preparation for a melodramatic, heart-warming story fit for Lifetime-- ain't happening. I'm 39 today (although the "Libra-dometer" went off in MySpace a couple of weeks ago) and quite happy about it. Life is good. I've learned to accept my strengths and work on my weaknesses.

I like MySpace. Where else is there the possibility or reaching out to roughly 200 million folkes TODAY. Sure there may be other more (or less) proper and professional places to meet people and network. I could ramble off a gazillion, but I'll spare you. Many people are writing about the "depths" of perceived friendships on social networking sites. And do they really mean anything. Some mention should go to the gal on MySpace with a million (maybe more) friends who got catapulted into celebrity status in the "mainstream" media. Someday, I hope to meet her, but for now she's more of a legend.

Many, many people spam me. That's the nature of the game. I'm here to network and meet people just like everyone else. When the glamour gals send me spam photos to push their product, service or whatever it is, I'm thinking about responding with a picture of my well-endowed wise ass, stretch marks and all instead of blacklisting them. What do you think?

This morning, My Birthday, I get a bulletin from a young man whom I know virtually nothing about that says "Read this, Bi&*ch!". Excuse me? My last act as his "friend" was respond to his bulletin that only people that KNOW me have EARNED the right to call me a Bi&*ch. Then deleted our short-lived friendship.

I don't mind when a spade is called a spade, but friendship is about learning the whole deck of cards.

I'm a collaborator. I enjoy connecting people and technology. That's what I do. That's what MySpace does. And that's my sand (soap) box.
