An Attitude of Gratitude

Power Thought of the Week

By Patricia Parham, Ph.D., Contributing Writer
Pat's Bio Email article RSS feed Share on facebook

Pour out, onto everyone in your network, an attitude of gratitude. Focusing on and appreciating the gifts that each has brought into your life is sure to generate energy of abundance around you. Be sincere and specific about how each individual has helped you and contributed to your success. While this is a very giving posture, it is also enlightened self-interest, for you multiply that to which you give your attention.

Joyous Holidays!

Heshie's Bio Email article RSS feed Share on facebook

With new social networks popping up each day, and even by the hour, it might be quite easy to never leave home or never leave the office and feel as though you have hundreds and thousands of “friends”. You are visible, you are everywhere, and you are connected. Furthermore, your chances for becoming extremely prosperous by having your entire business online are excellent. And, there still comes a time when you will want to be out in the sun, the snow and even the rain. You will want to have that powerful human connection that is only present when you are face to face.

So now the question is how do I do it? It seems so simplistic and yet for those who spend their time working and being most comfortable becoming visible on the Internet and through e-mails, it might not be perceived as a such a simple matter. In fact, for people who are shy or more task or fact oriented, it could appear as a daunting task. The truth is it does take skills and they can be acquired. They are not difficult. They simply have to be learned and utilized.

The Art of Managing Yourself

“Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of.”
- Benjamin Franklin

Everything in life happens in a framework of time. In order to network effectively, you need to have the time to network. The most important thing for you to do is to establish a meaning in life, to establish a mission, and to create something you love to do. Your mission becomes something you organize time around.

One thing to realize is that time management is not the goal. No, you can’t manage time. You can only manage yourself. Before mentioning the details of managing yourself, I would like to say that management should not be overly-rigid. You should spend a portion of the day being spontaneous, having fun, and doing things you love other than work. Of course your time should be balanced between work, family life, and time spent with your friends.

Networking with Large Files

By MIKE O'NEIL, Technology Editor Mike's Bio Email article RSS feed Share on facebook

Networkers have bigger computing needs that the average users. We generally share the mentality that “more is better” or “bigger is better”. Here are some examples:

  • Bigger hard drives to handle more and larger files, especially those big contact lists that we love so much.
  • More memory to handle more applications so we can search these larger lists. It isn’t unusual for power networkers to have a dozen browser windows open at one time either.
  • Faster processors that can keep up with us (or most often can’t).
  • Higher speed Internet connections.
  • More USB ports so we can plug in more “stuff”.
  • Larger displays so we can see all this or smaller ones so we can be more portable.

Networkers also have bigger files and share them more frequently. This is a compounded problem as they eat disk space, suck up bandwidth and most often don’t ever seem to get there.

Diversity NetWorking – Part 2

By Maria Elena Duron, Multicultural Networking Editor Maria's Bio Email article RSS feed Share on facebook

In last month's article, I began an interview with Greg Maes, who manages the small business side of the supply chain for Chevron Global Upstream (a Chevron U.S.A. Inc. Division). I continue my visit with Greg this month as he gives networkers an insight on where we can focus our networking efforts.

Maria Elena: You mentioned that you seek small businesses to mentor through the process and certifications necessary to do business with Chevron and similar companies. Where are some places that we, small business owners, can be and network so that we might connect with you and garner your mentoring assistance?

Women Are Doing Business, Building Connections by Networking in the Northern Plains

By Robert Stanke, Northern Plains Bureau Chief Robert's Bio Email article RSS feed Share on facebook

It is no secret that it takes some serious networking and relationship building to build and successfully run a business anywhere in the world. Business owners need buyers (repeat buyers are the best) and the way to get them is to get their name out there among peers. What amazes me is that different groups of individuals have really banded together to advance business dealings, and relationships, over the past 20 years. Minorities, veterans, and perhaps one of the biggest of these groups – women, have made huge advancements in networking to both win business and build lasting professional relationships. During the course of my research, it was absolutely amazing to see all the websites, tools, networking groups, and services that business women are using to advance careers and bottom lines.

So this month, I wanted to take some time and share with you how women in the Northern Plains are doing business and building connections by networking. I will share some thoughts from Wendy Kram, the owner of Entrespect, Inc., who I got the opportunity to share a cup of coffee with. Wendy is among those who are helping women business owners advance in the marketplace, and she had interesting viewpoints to share with The National Networker. Finally, I have gathered some great links to some of the wonderful organizations that put a focus on women and networking.

NY Xpo for Business Show

By Ruth Gatling, Mid-Atlantic Bureau Chief Email article RSS feed Share on facebook

On November 28th I traveled into Manhattan to go to the 2007 NY Xpo for Business Show at the Jacob Javitz center. What a show! There where about 600 booths and over 30 free seminars. As a matter of fact, the show itself was free. That’s right, no admission fee.

The event started with the New York Times kick-off breakfast with keynote speaker Michael Rogers, New York Times’ Futurist-in-residence. He spoke about the advancement of technology, the challenges and opportunities for small and mid-size businesses to take advantage of the technology to get in front of prospects and customers and what to look forward to in the future.

FohBoh: The Social Network For Food!

From Adotas.com...

FohBoh Inc. announced the launch of its first-to-market social network for the global restaurant, food and beverage industry today. FohBoh is short for “front of the house, back of the house” and focuses on creating the “LinkedIn” for the restaurant business.

Michael L. Atkinson, CEO and co-founder of the site stated “There’s not been a major online social gathering spot for folks in our industry until now. MySpace and Facebook are clear leaders in generic social networking today and have educated the market, but they are entirely horizontal, so they don’t cater well to niches of specific interest. This is where FohBoh excels. A restaurateur in Australia might give someone in Chicago a terrific idea on how to better promote their restaurant.”
