THE NET-TECH REPORT: Your Hands-Free, 24/7 Sales Person

The Net-Tech Report with Chris Kauza

Okay Business Owners - Quiz Time!

How do you stay in touch with your customers?
A. Direct Mail
B. Telemarketing
C. Email Campaigns that someone runs for you
D. I use an autoresponder
E. None of the above / don't know / not currently doing

How do you advertise upcoming sales?
A. Direct Mailers (val-Pack, coupon books, sales flyers, etc.)
B. Newspaper
C. Local Media (cable TV, radio spots, etc.)
D. Email to customer list
E. Combination (which one(s)?)
F. None of the above / don't know / not currently doing

How did you do? Are you doing any or a couple of these? My hope is that you at least didn't answer "E" for both questions - but if you did then I am going to show you how to fix that in the next 5 business days. And if you're already employing some of these methods, I'm going to show you how to turn up the impact.

According to a recent Nielsen study, 43% of business owners do not have a website. At all. From what I see everyday, almost all of the other 57% are not employing them to drive new business for their companies. In fact, most of them do not have any kind of "opt-in" form on their website.

One of the most important assets a business can have is their customer list. These are the people who have bought, or have expressed interest in buying, from the the business. It's not a website with flashy graphics. It's not "traffic" that you get from "organic SEO". It's your list of customers. Search Engine Optimization (SEO), compelling websites - these are all important. But they are not as critical as your customer list.

With few exceptions, if you are relying on Direct Mail, then you are using the Pony Express to try and reach your market. People sort their mail by the wastebasket so they can throw away the junk mail - don't you? It is increasingly inefficient.

Telemarketing? Well, at least you are one century closer to the present - but nobody likes them! Email blasts? Well, you're one step closer to the present but if your messages aren't targeted then you are wasting your time.

Only about 8% of business owners are doing anything to consistently keep in touch with their customers. An Autoresponder can take care of this

An autoresponder is a very simple piece of technology that you can use to build and manage your customer lists over time. It's your hands-free, 24/7 salesperson - and it's something you HAVE TO have. When properly built and managed, it can add thousands of dollars to your top line - automatically. it can be used in conjunction with other methods, if you'd like.

There are many different types of autoresponders out there, and you'll find that they range in price from $0 - $5,000. You don't need the high-end systems to start with; plan on spending $50/month or less. You can have it integrated into your website, or as an adjunct to it.

Do not use the free ones. Free autoresponders don't cost you anything because they are piggy-backing on your message with their own advertisements That's why they are free; they are basically making off of your list.

Action Step:
Do an online search for autoresponders that cost less than $50/month, and sign up for it. Most of them have step-by-step instructions you can use to set up the features, input your customer contact information, etc. Once you are set up, use it to promote your next sale or to send your newsletter, and watch your productivity soar and your profits increase!

If you get stuck along the way, please contact me (ckauza "at" FettMarketing.com) and I'll do what I can to help you.

NETWORKING WITH TODAY'S MOTHERS: Ecomoms, MainStreetMoms

Networking with Today's Mothers By Noelle Southwick

Before the internet existed mothers were building community relationships, sharing knowledge and keeping neighbors informed. The role of mothers has always included the abilities we now call networking skills.

With the use of technology mothers are expanding the number of people they support and to whom they contribute out to a worldwide audience.

There are approximately 82 million mothers in the United States. The internet is giving them a powerful tool to connect them with what they need/want and with each other.

The ability to create a group of mothers with similar beliefs/goals has created communities of mothers supporting one another in a variety of ways. I count myself in the growing number of mothers using technology to build relationships and create a new type of support system.

Ecomoms ~ http://ecomom.com

With a goal of promoting healthy living Ecomoms is a community of environmentally conscious mothers. The members of this community are authentically searching for ways to live in a balanced and sustainable way.

The Ecomoms provides many of the things mothers are looking for:

  • A social network to gather and share information about the sustainability movement: a way to build relationships.
  • On-line shopping for a wide variety of items to improve our environment such as organic clothing, earth friendly toys and sustainable home items: a way to take action in the day to day choices.
  • An eco-media channel bringing together people, products and green news: a way to get educated and stay informed.
  • A way to stay connected with and support environmental policy: a way to take action on the big picture.

This site offers real solutions for moms who want to connect, to learn to be more green and make a difference for our planet.

Main Street Moms ~ http://mainstreetmom.com

This site is a much broader site then the Ecomoms site. Their forum has over 20,000 threads. Categories for the forum include such categories as parenting, family budget, let’s talk food, spiritual grow and entertainment. The categories are more general but the site is a great resource of information.

Additionally, Main Street Moms includes articles on topics such as crafts, budgeting and health and fitness. The site even has printable lists to assist with meal planning, packing for a trip and household tasks.

The site was busy with lots of Google ads. Since Mia Cronan is a mother with five children running the site from her home, the ads support her ability to offer the free resource of helpful tips and advice to other moms.

Mothers have the ability to create huge change in our world and networks allow them to organize and support one another. If you are a mother who wants to know how to create a lifestyle that is conscious of the impact on the environment then check our Ecomom. If you want a wealth of helpful information addressing the many issues we face as mothers then check out Main Street Moms for the support of a large network of mothers.

PEOPLE, POWER AND POSSIBILITIES: Listen Up!

People, Power and Possibilities with Donna Fisher

True listening creates connection! Not the kind of listening where you're partially hearing what someone is saying while thinking about what you're going to say. Listening creates connection when you give your full attention to someone and are mentally engaged in what they are saying.

True listening requires the ability to focus on someone else and give up being self-focused or self-oriented. The mentality required to be a true listener involves the following:

A. Give people delighted attention. Whether you agree with what someone is saying or not, imagine simply be pleased to be in conversation with them to learn more about what they think and feel.

B. Be curious and interested in knowing more about the person and you will be just naturally more engaged in the conversation.

C. Don't rush people. Be patient and show people that they are important and that you really do want to hear what they have to say.

D. Stay present to the conversation. It is very easy for the mind to wander; and yet, very important to stay focused.

E. Pick up on the non-verbal communication so that you can understand all of what's being communicated.

F. Listen for an opportunity to be of service. Rather than just listening "to" someone, listen "for" information that will help you better understand how to be a resource for this person.

I don't believe that people are inherently good or bad listeners. Instead, I believe that it all has to do with our habits. Enhancing your listening skills is as simple as integrating some of the ideas from above into new habits in your way of being with people.

It is through listening that you connect. People in our culture are hungry to be really heard and will really appreciate someone who truly listens.
