Recommended, The Book | DAVE CLARKE

Dave Clarke
by Dave Clarke

This month sees the launch of the third book from my fellow National Networker Columnist, Andy Lopata. The book 'Recommended: How to Sell Through Networking and Referrals' is both a good read and a useful manual that you can dip in and out of to help build an effective referral strategy for yourself. It is published by the Pearson Group with the imprint of Prentice Hall Financial Times. It follows hot on the heels of the updated version of '...and Death Came Third!', the definitive guide to networking and speaking in public.

I chatted with Andy this week at our NRG Metropolitan Networking Group in London.

1. Why write this third book, Andy?

"Far too many organisations, of all sizes, either fail to consider referrals in a strategic way for their business, or have a half-hearted and ineffective approach to generating word of mouth. Businesses need to have access to a simple, yet much more focused, process of referral-based lead generation and treat it in the same way they do other routes to market.

From a personal point of view, much of my work over the last three years has been focused on networking and referrals strategies, rather than the skills covered in '...and Death Came Third!' In addition, my approach and content have evolved, so there was a need to write something more representative of what I do now and who I work with.

I have also worked increasingly with larger organisations and wanted to be able to make my approach easily accessible to smaller business who weren't necessarily in the position to bring me in to work with them direct.
"

2. What’s the reason for the title, Recommended?

"I had been struggling to find a strong title throughout the writing process. I then heard a good friend of mine, Grant Leboff, speaking to promote his new book Sticky Marketing. In his talk, Grant discussed changes in buyer behaviour and how we have moved from people being open to others selling to them, to finding out for themselves what they want to buy. And they find out using two methods; they search the internet or they ask friends, family and colleagues to recommend a supplier.

If we accept that our prospects are more likely to buy from us if a third party recommends us, surely we should have a strategy to encourage those recommendations and, even better, referrals. Hence the title.
"

3. What's the most important thing you want people to take from reading the book?

"That a strategic approach to generating new business through referral is both essential and also can pay huge dividends. Knowing that people are successful applying my Referral Book process would be fantastic. But if each reader takes away one or two key tips and implements them, they will win more business more easily.

I hope it's an entertaining and engaging read, but that is far more important.
"

4. So what’s next for Andy Lopata?

"I have a couple of exciting speaking engagements coming up, starting with my first trip to Vietnam this month. I've already spoken with my publisher about future projects and we have settled on a couple of ideas for new books which I'll come back to look at early next year.

We are also looking to develop a wider range of resources to help companies and individuals implement their own networking and referrals strategies.
"

As it says on the cover, if you want to grow your business, get Recommended!

Until next time...
Good Networking!

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: E-Volunteering to Build Powerful Networks, Part 1

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Leverage E-Volunteering into Referrals and Contracts
Volunteering has long been a method of developing networks and demonstrating the value that you add to organizations and causes. Translate this into the digital reality of this decade and volunteer from the comfort of your computer. It’s easy to share the results of your efforts with the recipients and, if no privacy issues are involved, with others via Facebook or LinkedIn or any number of on-line communities. Sign your work with flourish and get people talking about you.

DAVE CLARKE: Reasons for Networking

We have conducted a survey at NRG business networking events over the last month or so amongst more than 100 first time attendees at networking events. They were given up to 3 choices as their reasons for networking.

It is probably no surprise to you that the biggest group gave 'more business' as a primary reason for networking. Looking for 'new connections' was the next most popular and then 'help with business issues' the third:

84% networking for more business
65% networking for new connections
29% networking for help with business issues

No surprise either that the most successful networkers are the ones who take the time to provide referrals, introductions and help to others first. They give the things that people are networking for and as a result they get the same back.

Good Networking!

Block and Tackle Networking

Mastering the Membership Maze with Glen Gould

Hall of Fame football coach Vince Lombardi is credited with starting each football summer camp by holding up a pigskin and declaring, "Gentlemen, this is a football."

Success in any endeavor in life relies on understanding the fundamentals. Whether football or networking, understanding the rules and knowing the basics cold are essential to success.

It is amazing the jump in attendance most chambers of commerce will see at programs during the month of January. As we approach a new year, what better time than now to reevaluate goals and objectives for attending chamber meetings in 2009. Here are a few tips to consider as you plan your year.

1. Determine your ultimate goal for chamber membership. What do you hope to gain through your chamber membership? As with every other type of marketing, determine in advance what success looks like. Who do you want to meet? How many new clients do you need to receive a satisfactory return on investment of marketing dollars and time spent?

2. Know what you expect to achieve by attending an event. Most people who attend chamber programs have no real goal they expect to achieve by attending. Know your outcome before you attend so you may determine your level of success. Determining what you want from each event gives you the fundamentals you'll need to be successful over the full year of membership.

3. Determine your rate of success for several events. You need to fill your pipeline with qualified leads and referrals to be sure, but you also need to fill your networking pipeline with quality networking partners who can introduce you to new quality leads and referrals. Determine how many qualified leads, referrals, and networking partners you gain from each event you attend.

4. Calculate how many leads and referrals equal a closed sale. You may wish to segment this into: People met, Networking Partners, Leads, Referrals, Presentations, Closed Business. Determine how many people you actually need to meet to get to the number of closed deals you need.

5. Determine the best events to attend to achieve your desired outcome. After sampling all available events and measuring the results of each, choose the one or two different events held each month that are best for you.

6. Attend regularly. Measure results. Achieve success.

If you are like most people, this sounds like a lot of work. It is. But these are the basics for success in attending and being a part of a chamber of commerce if you measure success in business closed. There are many more reasons to join your local chamber to be sure, however those who will flood the chamber in January are likely those looking for new clients.

Armed with a plan for success, you will stand out from the crowd, attract more business, have more meaningful relationships, and have a more fulfilling experience.

Networking In Austin

By Peter Biadasz
U.S. Southern Plains Bureau Chief
(Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico)

When Scott Ingram, founder of NetworkinAustin.com, moved from California to Austin, Texas he found that there was no central networking resource for him to tap into. Being the self motivated networker that he is, he decided to form a resource that would connect the business networking community of Austin. Desiring to create an environment that would build relationships, generate referrals and create real business, for anyone involved. Thus, NetworkingInAustin.com was birthed.

NetworkInAustin.com was created to save networkers time and money by helping them choose the networking events that are right for them before they attend. Unlike more limited business journal listings, NetworkInAustin.com offers key details about a full range of networking opportunities, including small business networking events, referral/leads group meetings, meetings of civic organizations and associations, Chambers of Commerce events, social networking opportunities as well as career change/ job search events. Being the largest business events calendar in Central Texas, NetworkInAustin.com actively works to list every public business and networking event in Central Texas.

In addiction to its extensive calendar NetworkInAustin.com provides its members with an online, industry-specific directory that currently lists 371 individuals. There is a member’s only section in which all memberships are individual memberships, not company memberships. This is because real relationships are with people, not companies.

Other benefits that are made available include: insider tips from some of Austin’s top networkers, teaching on how to ask for (and give) referrals, how to turn lukewarm leads into red-hot referrals, keys to building long-lasting business relationships., how to create top-of-mind awareness and generate word-of-mouth advertising, an extensive list of networking resources, articles, blogs and books.

If this sounds like a lot, it is. Scott shared with me that NetrworkingInAustin.com is “the hub of networking activity and information in the greater Austin area”. He shared with me that the organization is quickly evolving and that there will be many exciting things happening in 2009 to make NetworkingInAusitn.com an even more valuable resource.

If you live in Austin, plan on traveling in Austin, or just want to learn form the networking professionals in Austin, I highly recommend NetworkingInAustin.com. ___________________________________________________

A TOASTER'S NO SLOT MACHINE

From the desk of Ron Sukenick

You've heard me talk about my toaster. I use toasters as a metaphor for business systems that savvy networkers put into place. I explain how, once I've set my toaster dial to "Dark" or "Medium", inserted my bagel or my slice of bread and pushed down the lever, I can let the toaster do its job. Meanwhile, I can go get my juice out of the refrigerator or put the finishing touches on my blog. I don't need to watch the toaster, or keep track of it, or "follow up" with it. The toaster will do what toasters do, and, soon enough, I'll hear the little "ping" that tells me my toast is ready.

"Sure, sure, Ron ", some complain. "You make it sound so simple. How come my phone's not ringing off the hook with referrals? How come I'm not getting dozens of good leads out of every networking meeting I attend? How come I try so hard but don't see immediate results?" Remarks like these are a clue. I've been talking about toasters, but the problem is, these people have toasters confused with slot machines.

See, when you're in the mood for a little bag of Cheez-its or some pretzels, you walk over to the vending machine, put your coins in the slot, and press the B-19 or the A-24 button. You certainly have every right to expect that little bag of Cheez-its or pretzels to come falling down to the opening. It's a simple tit-for-tat proposition. So my theory is, that's why some business people imagine that every time they show up for a networking meeting, they'll be rewarded with, at minimum, a couple of leads. And every time they do a favor for someone, they expect to receive, in short order, a favor in return. (After all, "What goes around comes around." - doesn't it?).

But slot machines aren't good metaphors for effective networking systems, because business is about people, and people don't do well with tit-for-tat propositions. When we use the Ultimate Discovery System to understand the four basic personality styles, when we practice focused, productive listening, when we follow the six steps that start relationships (see my earlier blog "Steps That Start Relationship"), we're setting up our toaster. We've shopped for just the right kind of bread. We've made a decision about whether our toast should be well done or just brown around the edges. We've set out a plate and utensils, and perhaps the cream cheese, peanut butter, or margarine. We've put up the coffee. In other words, for each piece of ready-to-eat toast that pops out of our toaster, we've devoted a lot of preparation and thought.

Remember those old song lyrics, "I beg your pardon - I Never Promised You A Rose Garden"? What I'm attempting to convey to people who want to take their networking to the next level is this: I never promised you a slot machine! Sharpen up your seeing. Deepen your understanding. Shape up your productive listening. Give the right referrals in the right way. Help everywhere you can. Learn all you can from everyone you can.

Once you've done those things, you can go get your juice from the refrigerator or finish up your blog, because your toaster's gonna do what a toaster's gotta do - as sure as my name's Ron Sukenick!

'Twas the Night Before Networking

After assessing my output of articles this year, I couldn’t help but notice that the content has been somewhat academic, and perhaps dry and “heady”. That can be fine and good, but my own personal barometer tells me that in these challenging times and this roller-coaster year that’s been 2008, I should at least go out with a bit of the levity that some of my long-time readers might remember. I wish you all a Happy Holiday Season and a Happy, Healthy New Year. Enjoy my “little poem”…

‘Twas the night before networking,

And as I looked ‘round my room,

I couldn’t help but feeling,

An impending doom.

I sighed as I reviewed,

The clothes I would wear,

And went over the way,

To show others I care.

As I looked out my window,

Upon the neighbors yards,

I remembered to make sure,

I had enough business cards.

And what to ask of the other,

Attendees I meet?

Would my message be clear?

Or would they stare at their feet?

Yes…something was missing,

Although I could not place it,

I knew that eventually,

I would just have to face it.

So I prayed and prayed,

For some heavenly insight,

As I stared out my window,

Looked out into the night.

Just then I heard it,

Louder than a mouse,

I hoped it would not wake,

My children and spouse.

She floated into my room,

Almost too dazzling to see,

And I awkwardly asked,

“Who are you supposed to be?”

She exclaimed, “I’m the angel,

Of all things ‘referrals’!”

And I took note she was surrounded,

By birds, bunnies and squirrels

And I asked, “Why are you here

At this time of the night?”

She responded, “To give you

Some ‘heavenly insight’!”

I said, “You don’t understand!”

As I stammered and hurried,

“It’s of global economic crises

And my business I am worried!”

“There are sell-offs and layoffs,

I am financially impaired!

Politicians are useless,

And quite frankly, I’m scared!”

“I have notable skills,

I am willing and able,

Yet unsure if I can keep,

Food on our table!”

Through my long diatribe,

She still shone like the sun,

And then she patiently smiled and asked,

“Are you done?”

“Instead of just looking,

At what you have not,

It’s time to focus on,

The things that you’ve got”

“You have a family that loves you,

Pages written and inked in,

Friends on Facebook and,

500+ contacts on LinkedIn.”

“Your friends at the Chamber,

Know for any task you are fitted,

And remember those skills,

To which before, you admitted?”

“We issue many challenges,

In many shapes and many forms,

And now you and the world,

Face one of our darker storms.”

“What you’re seeing is conflict,

Between established and new,

Many contacts of yours know what’s come before,

Will no longer do.”

“So to weather the storm,

Look beyond things you lack,

For it’s only your fears,

That are holding you back.”

“When you network with fear,

It just leads to more talk,

Then round and round in circles,

You will continue to walk.”

“So look to your network,

Take action! Form teams!

Identify problems!

‘Bust out’ at the seams!”

“Network with passion and purpose,

In all of its forms,

Nothing lasts forever,

Not even our storms.”

“In time you will realize,

Seas are calm, skies are blue,

The worst part is over,

Yet there’s still more to do!”

“Then you’ll look back fondly,

On the lessons you’ve learned,

New friends you have found,

RC* you have earned.”

With that she hugged me,

Then her wings had unfurled,

“Remember to ‘be the change,

You want to see in this world’.”

As she turned to leave, I said, “Wait!

What can I do for you?”

She replied, “Spread my message

To all those close to you.”

“Tell Kensel, tell Victor,

Tell Ivan and Ron,

Tell Lydia and Meira

Don’t forget dear Sian

“Tell Donna, tell Heshie,

Chris, Lynn and Noelle,

Jason, Rita and Larry,

And Douglas as well”

“Tell Matt and Kathleen,

Tell Glen, Jay and Andy,

Tell Bill, Ann and Terry,

Tell Maria and Candy”

“Tell Bruce and Danielle,

Tell the Chinese and the Scottish

Tell Joyce and Patricia

And that dude named ‘Biadasz’”

I thanked the dear Angel

Of All Things “Referrals”

And then picked up after all

The birds, bunnies and squirrels

And then I heard as she laughed

And flew out of sight

“Happy Networking to all

And to all a good night!”

See you in 2009!

The Emergence of the Relationship Economy

Relationship Capital is the cornerstone of the Relationship Economy, which RNIA defines as “a measurement assigned to individual and organizational entities based on the relationship interactions between them, and the interactions they have internally.” I am proud to have contributed discussion of the Ten Laws of Relationship Capital to the upcoming book The Emergence of the Relationship Economy, now out as an eBook and in hardcopy. With a forward written by Doc Searls (of Cluetrain Manifesto fame), it is being considered a “must read” for anyone responsible for the strategic direction of their business. A Sure-Fire Way to Fail

Mastering the Membership Maze with Glen Gould

Most often in this article we discuss success strategies for membership in your local chamber of commerce. Today we'll learn "how to" by examining what not to do!

It's just sad. As an insider at the chamber of commerce I have the opportunity to help people move their business forward. I have a front row seat as well meaning members provide new comers with leads and referrals. And I get to see first hand when people actually get business as a result of their networking efforts. So what could be so sad?

Far too often I watch excited new members come to an event for the first time and do the one thing that will assure their failure in networking (and life). They fail to follow up.

It would seem quite simple. You pay good money for access to an organization. You then further invest with your time by attending events. You become known, liked, and trusted. You receive a lead or referral. And then you fail to follow up? What's going on here?

While I have found no hard evidence to reference, I believe more than eighty-percent of the referrals that are given are never contacted. Frankly I suspect it is quite a bit more than eighty-percent. The fact is that at least eight out of ten of the leads and referrals I share never get a follow up phone call.

Regardless of the lead or referral, you should follow up on all leads or referrals within twenty-four hours. That means that if you can't fit follow up into your schedule, perhaps you shouldn't attend an event that will result in leads and referrals.

We have all heard that we only have one chance to make a good first impression. While this holds true for a one on one meeting, it is amplified when you are a part of a group. Your failure to follow up will spread throughout the group faster and your chances will diminish quickly. You'll soon be thought of as unreliable. That is a reputation we should all endeavor to avoid.

There is some good news however. If you follow up and let people know you appreciate their referrals and leads, you will get more. And getting more means you'll be getting more business. So if you've neglected your referrals and leads, begin giving each one your full attention and you'll build a reputation of being reliable. That's a reputation we all need.
