A Twist On Twitter - How to Use Twitter as a Mini Blog | THE NET-TECH REPORT

Chris Kauza
The Net-Tech Report with Chris Kauza

A lot of the clients we work with like the idea of a Blog and understand how it helps them to stay in touch with their clients and also boost their SEO activity. However, many of them tell us that “keeping up with it” is the hardest thing – especially on top of all of the “other” work they have to do in the regular course of their business. Solution? Use Twitter as a “mini-blog”!

What do I mean by a mini-blog? Most people feel constrained with Twitter's interface and the 140 character limitation – but this is a blessing in disguise! The best way to leverage this is to view Twitter as a miniature blog where you share your thoughts on a particular topic, and see what tweets get re-tweeted (shared), commented on, etc.

Using Twitter as a mini-blog also makes sure that whatever you write down very substantive – in fact, some might go as far as trying to write Twitter Haiku - so-called "Twaiku", and whom you can follow by clicking his name - but that's beyond the scope of this article! It must be precise, brief and compact. You need to really think about what you want to say, in order for your audience to fully grasp your meaning in those 140 characters. However, given the fact that most business owners I know are very busy running and growing their companies, Twitter gives them an avenue to provide quick insights or updates on relevant topics in business.

...but I'm not saying to not have a blog – both are important and serve a purpose. In fact, there are certain basic differences between a tweet and your blog. Suppose your blog is more of a novel and your tweets are short stories. Both are written differently with a different purpose (and perhaps audience) in mind. You have virtually no limitation lengths with blog posts, allowing you to really explore different aspects of your topic. Tweets on Twitter, however, really force you be succinct and focused with your commentary.

Be sure to include your blog and website addresses in your Twitter profile, so you can direct web traffic generated by your tweet to your main website. Undoubtedly, there will be people who will feel interested enough to browse through your website. Further, the Internet has changed how many people read and consume content; many are not willing to put the time in to read a “long” blog post of 4 – 7 paragraphs. Tweets are so short that a reader has no option but to read it in its entirety!

In order to use Twitter effectively, try to use it as a “special preview” of your own website or business blog. Those tweets that get re-tweeted or a lot of response to, are good indications of topics you should consider exploring further in your blog. It's GREAT for market research, in that way. You can pose questions to your audience, inviting them to comment, take a quick poll or survey, etc.

Don't forget the more pedestrian purpose of using Twitter to simply inform your audience of new content on your blog, Facebook Fan Page (you do have one, don't you?). Many people monitor Twitter to let them know of new information that they need to pay attention to, throughout their day.

THE NET-TECH REPORT: 4 Ways To Build Your Prospect List - For F-r-e-e!

The Net-Tech Report with Chris Kauza

You may have heard the saying, “The Money Is In The List!”. What this means is that your greatest source of revenue is likely to come from customers who have previously purchased from you. These are proven buyers for you – because they have already made a purchase from you. And by building and maintaining a relationship with them, you have the opportunity to increase your business at an average cost of sales that will tend to be much lower than that associated with new customers.

So what are some ways you can develop a good customer list? Here are four effective and F-R-E-E ways to get you started...
  1. Article marketing – written articles published in an online venue (such as ezine articles or The National Networker) enhance your professional credibility. You have the opportunity to share what you know with others, and to enhance your credibility at the same time. People do business with people they Know / Like ? Trust (The KLT Factor). When they read your writing in a magazine, they become more interested in you and more convinced that your company is the right one for the job. Writing and submitting helpful, quality articles to reputable article directories is very effective. For added Search Engine Optimization (SEO) benefit, include a resource box at the end of your articles that contains a link to your blog or a web page, where readers can then register to be included in your lists.

  2. Social media marketing – Millions of people use social networking sites every single day, with Twitter and Facebook currently being two of the most popular. Connect with people within your target market. Provide them with information that they are interested in, and you will be able to promote and introduce them to your list. Done well, this is “Permission-based Marketing” at its finest.

  3. Blogging – This is a very effective strategy for building your list. Just write blog entries that are 300 – 500 words in length, on topics that relate to your market. Write about topics that provide value to readers and clients. At the end of each post, or whenever someone posts a comment, give them the opportunity to opt-in to your list.

  4. Offer a gift or a freebieeverybody likes “getting something for nothing”. For everyone who opts-in to your list, you can given them a good reason for joining your list – it could be a special offer or discount for VIP members (i.e. - those people who are on your list), a free whitepaper or report, or even a special tool or software application. This is a time-tested way to get prospects who have undergone some level of qualification, onto your distribution list.
These are just some of the things you can do to grow your customer list – get creative! Take a look at your business through your customer's eyes and see what they are missing, what problems they have or questions they are seeking answers to. Then, take your best information and give it to them for FREE!!! You'll be glad you did!

THE NET-TECH REPORT: End of The Year Recap: Social Networking Can Help Your Business Grow in 2011!

The Net-Tech Report with Chris Kauza

What do you think about when you hear "Facebook", "Twitter" or "MySpace"? Do you think it's kids texting each other about what they had to eat and who they saw at the mall?

As I've written about in previous columns, social networking is not just the realm of the bored and the teenaged any more. In fact, it's so easy to get started, that many businesses owners are utilizing social networking platforms to spread the word about their companies and what they have to offer. Which platforms are they going to and why?

1. Interpersonal Social Networking Sites

Over the last few years, sites like MySpace and Facebook are increasingly being utilized by corporations all over the globe, with smaller, locally-focused businesses rapidly doing the same – often times without really understanding what they are doing or why! One of the best ways to set up your presence on interpersonal social networking sites like these is to create a fan-based page for your business and then encourage your customers, friends and family members to join your page. As new people join, your content will appear in the status updates and news feeds of their contacts – who, in turn, might "fan" you themselves and before you know it, you are being contacted by people across the globe about your product base!

2. Micro-Blogging with Twitter (and similar sites)

Twitter started out as almost an underground movement that people could use to send text messages to (sometimes) hundreds of people at once—it is called "micro blogging" and the goal is to describe your current situation/mood/thoughts in 140 characters or less. Business owners have been opening up Twitter accounts and sending "tweets" about current specials and sales or company updates to the people who follow them. Getting followers can be tricky and you should target your potential followers carefully. Simply following hundreds of people can get you labeled as a follow spammer and you might get banned. Actively engage people who talk about things that are interesting to you or relevant to your business; that way, you are sure to find common ground and develop stronger rapport with your audience, and increase the likelihood that your message will be heard.

3. Business Oriented Social Networking Sites

Sites like LinkedIn, Yelp and MerchantCircle are built specifically to help people form business contacts in their local and technical fields. LinkedIn is a fantastic way to grow your business network by having one of your contacts "introduce" you to someone else on their contact list and then getting to know them. Yelp and MerchantCircle allows business owners to produce coupons and write blog entries to share business information with followers and "friends." These sites operate on a professional basis, so you are unlikely to accidentally run across unflattering photos of your contacts or accidentally be tagged for quizzes the way you will on interpersonal social networking sites.

Many business owners are embracing social networking technology as a way to show their clients that they understand the current technologies and social movements. A business that cannot grow and adapt with the times will quickly stagnate and fail.

Social media is not a passing fad (remember the Pet Rock???) By embracing social networking technology, business owners can reach potential clients that they would ordinarily not have access through traditional networking methods. Social networking can help your company grow from a struggling small business into a strong and growing company.
