POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Powerful Words, Part 4

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Powerful Words are Declarative

The most powerful words catalyze action. Instead of asking your network for something, create a compelling argument and then call for action. A persuasive argument convinces the reader of the goodness of the idea, lays the foundation to gain support and shows what to do to make a difference. This works best when their interests are served, as well as your own, so that everyone supports the change. You will be thanked for outlining the most expeditious trajectory towards achieving a goal. Show people how to get their needs met and reap the benefits of that leadership. What do you need from your network? Identify it and create a call for action!

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Powerful Words, Part 3

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D

Powerful Words may be Negative

Negative words may be considered impolite or precursors to conflict. The first is a logical fallacy. Tact and diplomacy can make any message socially acceptable. The potential for conflict can be minimized by following three simple guidelines.
  1. Never use negative words to describe an individual or her values.

  2. Always attach negative words to ideas or behaviors. This creates distance between the person and the idea or the behavior, so that they can hear and process a dissenting point of view.

  3. While negating bad ideas and ineffective behaviors, affirm the person from whom they came. You can say almost anything to anyone when you say it with love.

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Powerful Words, Part 2

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D

Powerful Words are not Neutral

In an effort to be polite, neutral words often replace negative ones. Saying a speech was interesting or an idea is novel, fills an empty conversational space. However, these words do not state an opinion around which others may join. In networks, the goal is to connect and engage with authenticity. Platitudes and vague comments waste time and energy -- yours and the recipient’s. Neutral words show weakness. Don’t hide behind them. If you don’t know, say so. If you don’t like something, tactfully say so and why. People can only choose to agree with you when you take a stand. Pick an issue important to you and start a blog. Voice an opinion.

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Powerful Words, Part 1

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

Powerful Words are Positive

Positive words build -- relationships, partnerships, and bridges. Positive scenarios created by positive words paint compelling pictures of desired outcomes, futures, and rewards. Focusing your words on what you want attracts like energies to you and your projects. These forces for good multiply, gathering momentum like the snowball rolling downhill, accelerating progress when appropriate foundations have been laid. Use positive words generously. Apply them to people, ideas and situations. Find someone in your network to affirm today. Describe for him a characteristic that you really like and give an example to show its positive impacts.
