THINGS OF VALUE: That Third Place: In Time

Things Of Value with Yossi Feigenson

A little while ago I was walking home from a function with a good friend, who happens to be a leader in our community, an author, lecturer and an inspirational leader to boot. Suffice to say, he is well known in our parts and is a celebrity to many. As we are walking, we get stopped and greeted every half block, by a well wisher, a follower or a friend. Of course there is a warm greeting for a few words with each individual. It was evident that he relished these moments. This walk home was no ordinary stroll; it was an event in itself. In minor bewilderment and amusement I said to him: you really take your third place seriously. And, without skipping a beat he replied, ‘the in-between places are the hidden places where so much of life’s the joy exists’.

Our little verbal exchange and my friend’s intuitive response brought to light something so important, so valuable and yet so often overlooked. There is so much of our lives that occurs in the in between time, that it is crucial for us to be aware of this time and pay attention to how we spend it.

I’ve experienced changes in my professional life, and I no longer have a long subway commute. The convenience is fabulous, but something, something I hold dear was lost; a little slice of my third place. Allow me to explain: Besides for the usual hassles that accompany a normal commute, it had become my personal place where I would lose myself in great books, do crossword puzzles, study or simply zone out. I don’t want to say this too loudly, but I miss those days. Many of my fellow commuters share this same sentiment. If you observe folks on the NYC Subway system you will see that many of them turn this space into their own private living area.

A walk home from anywhere, a daily commute, a flight, waiting for an appointment, or any other “unscheduled” in-between time are all opportunities for us to take hold of and make our own.
The loose definition of the third place is the place and time in between the home and work. The time we spend at home and at work is mostly accounted for, and somewhat scheduled and structured. The third place is the time that will not show up on your outlook calendar, is not a time to study with a child, or even to eat dinner. Rather, it is a place in time, minutes or hours, which are hidden and so often go unnoticed that they barely exist.

Former chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan wrote in his memoir that he spends 15 minutes each day in quiet reflection. I gleaned as much insight from this passage Than I did from the rest of the book. Mr. Greenspan carved out of his insanely busy life a small pocket of time in which he allowed himself to reflect, think and rejuvenate.

This is not an article about time management. Rather, I’ll call it time awareness. The art and science of managing ones time are way beyond the scope of this discussion. There are hundreds of books on the subject and countless time management gurus ready to provide meaningful guidance in that regard. This is about appreciating the romance of a special time and seeing the value in it. It is about time value.

Diners and restaurants fashion themselves a third place. No company in recent memory has driven home this notion better than Starbucks. As Howard Schultz, the founder of Starbucks famously quipped “We're not in the business of filling bellies; we’re in the business of filling souls”. Sipping a hot drink in Starbucks has really become synonymous with the in-between place. Have you ever noticed how relaxed people appear to be in Starbucks? I personally think it is one of the greatest places to have a conversation. Better than the office, even better than home.

Every moment is precious. Many are filled with so much to do. Yet, there are hidden third places that can belong to us. Let’s use them. Let’s find the third places in our lives. Let’s be aware of them. Let’s cherish them.

THINGS OF VALUE: Just Write It Down

Things Of Value with Yossi Feigenson

I’m back in the groove of this monthly column, which I have so thoroughly enjoyed. One of the interesting benefits of writing this has been the ability it has given me of going back and seeing where my mind was at different times throughout the year. The moods of the moment really dictate the subjects I write about and the style I employ. To be sure, I enjoy the process and it gives me great satisfaction, but from the perspective productivity and business growth is writing something I should bother with? Or, to frame this question in the context of this column; is there any tangible value to writing?

It is not a stretch to suggest that the majority of us will not blossom into widely read authors, or become well paid for our efforts. Most likely, we will be writing to a small audience or none at all. So why bother? Where is the return-on-investment for the time and effort?

Another perspective on writing: One of the surest, or perhaps the only way to ensure that any idea one may come to its fruition is by the simple act of writing it down. Any Idea, by its very nature, is an elusive dot (point) of insight that hits us unexpectedly, without prior warning, and often at inconvenient times, and just as quickly as it arrives, it disappears. So, before we continue the discussion on the values of writing one thing we should all take with us is this: Get in the habit of writing down your ideas. You have more ideas than you think and you are more creative than you think. The problem is that ideas come and go, and if we don’t catch them, they may be gone forever.

This idea was brilliantly brought to light by Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the wildly popular “Eat, Pray, Love” in at TED Talk she gave about creativity. She so eloquently described how any idea or a thought can run away from us if we are not prepared to catch it. (It may be worth your while to see that at TED.com.)

One of the great rabbinic masters used to complain about the Sabbath (a day in which orthodox Jews are forbidden to do things like write) that many of his ideas would be lost to him because he couldn’t write.

These are the great and creative minds, who intuitively realize and understand the value of writing down their thoughts and ideas. What about the rest of us? How relevant and important is this notion? Can an entrepreneur really have so much to gain by employing this practice? The commerce minded person is focused mostly, as he should be, on business, or to employ the tired phrase; on the “bottom line”.

The notion, however, that if you are not in a creative endeavor there is no creativity to your work has been debunked and argued so ably by Seth Godin in his latest work, “Linchpin”. His basic premise is that we all bring art to our work, and it’s our creativity that will set us apart from being just another cog in the wheel. Which will then turn us into; you guessed it: A linchpin.

The average business person is simply not in tune with the creative juice that is flowing within. Mostly this is because we don’t have a platform for the expression of the creative ideas. When we sit in a meeting and keep proper notes we increase our odds of better follow up.

While writing is closely associated with being a creative craft, it holds within it crucial business applications. Taking written notes helps you be more engaged in your thinking process. It forces you to work through and crystallize your thoughts and ideas. It also keeps the creative juices flowing.

Creative ideas and bottom line business are closely linked. And the way to connect the two is through utilizing the simple tool of writing the ideas down.

A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER: CEO Space Pavilion Debuts

CEO Space Pavilion Debuts

by Adam J. Kovitz

This last full week of October is a bit of a homecoming.

When I first started this publication (originally called The Networker) back in February, 2005, I knew it needed to be BIG and national, if not eventually, international.  Unfortunately, at the time, this small-town kid from New Jersey (yes Virginia, they do have small towns in New Jersey) just recently transplanted to the Philadelphia suburbs and had no clue as to how to be seen and heard on a much larger scale.  Keep in mind that online social networks were still in their infancy...Ryze and Friendster were semi-popular...LinkedIn and Facebook were only shadows of what they are today.

Enter CEO Space, an international network of entrepreneurs, service providers and angel investors that present "forums" five times a year.  These forums are staffed by graduates and taught (at an MBA-level) by coaches, trainers and other professionals like Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup for the Soul), Jay Abraham, John Grey (Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus) and a host of others.  All forums culminate in a mega-sized trade show, designed to accelerate plans, attract team members, generate revenues and raise capital.

My brother introduced me to Cheryl Adams, wife of our own Rob Adams (one of our BLUE TUESDAY Report contributors) who was my local CEO Space Director.  She told me all about CEO Space and I immediately knew that I had to be at the next forum in May of 2005 ("Class 505", as they put it).  Long story short...I went...I attracted attention to The Networker, so much so that by August, we changed the official name to The National Networker...we were read all over the country just 6 months after we launched...keep in mind that there was no TNNWC website at the time...just an emailed newsletter.

Since then I've continued to go back to CEO Space as they have continued to support TNNWC (now international) and this week I am proud to announce the debut of the CEO Space Pavilion, which will be showcasing the various talent and personalities of the organization every week for the benefit of our members and subscribers.  CEO Space now joins such esteemed organizations as BNI, The Joy of Connecting and Kalon Women in the The National Networker pantheon of pavilions!

Whether or not you're a graduate of CEO Space, as long as you're an entrepreneur, you will always find something of value in the new CEO Space pavilion...enjoy!

SPOILER ALERT:  In the upcoming weeks, TNNWC will begin offering our members access to the CEO Space forums...email us at memberservices@tnnwc.com for more information.

In other news, we welcome back our old friend, Yossi Feigenson.  For those new members who do not remember Yossi, he had a wildly popular column and was widely loved by our readers.  This week, we are delighted to welcome Yossi back for the debut of his new column, Things of Value.  WELCOME BACK YOSSI!!!

Next week...it's November already...election week in the U.S. and a new month of quality articles for your information, education and enjoyment!

All my best,

Adam
