A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER: CEO Space Pavilion Debuts

CEO Space Pavilion Debuts

by Adam J. Kovitz

This last full week of October is a bit of a homecoming.

When I first started this publication (originally called The Networker) back in February, 2005, I knew it needed to be BIG and national, if not eventually, international.  Unfortunately, at the time, this small-town kid from New Jersey (yes Virginia, they do have small towns in New Jersey) just recently transplanted to the Philadelphia suburbs and had no clue as to how to be seen and heard on a much larger scale.  Keep in mind that online social networks were still in their infancy...Ryze and Friendster were semi-popular...LinkedIn and Facebook were only shadows of what they are today.

Enter CEO Space, an international network of entrepreneurs, service providers and angel investors that present "forums" five times a year.  These forums are staffed by graduates and taught (at an MBA-level) by coaches, trainers and other professionals like Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup for the Soul), Jay Abraham, John Grey (Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus) and a host of others.  All forums culminate in a mega-sized trade show, designed to accelerate plans, attract team members, generate revenues and raise capital.

My brother introduced me to Cheryl Adams, wife of our own Rob Adams (one of our BLUE TUESDAY Report contributors) who was my local CEO Space Director.  She told me all about CEO Space and I immediately knew that I had to be at the next forum in May of 2005 ("Class 505", as they put it).  Long story short...I went...I attracted attention to The Networker, so much so that by August, we changed the official name to The National Networker...we were read all over the country just 6 months after we launched...keep in mind that there was no TNNWC website at the time...just an emailed newsletter.

Since then I've continued to go back to CEO Space as they have continued to support TNNWC (now international) and this week I am proud to announce the debut of the CEO Space Pavilion, which will be showcasing the various talent and personalities of the organization every week for the benefit of our members and subscribers.  CEO Space now joins such esteemed organizations as BNI, The Joy of Connecting and Kalon Women in the The National Networker pantheon of pavilions!

Whether or not you're a graduate of CEO Space, as long as you're an entrepreneur, you will always find something of value in the new CEO Space pavilion...enjoy!

SPOILER ALERT:  In the upcoming weeks, TNNWC will begin offering our members access to the CEO Space forums...email us at memberservices@tnnwc.com for more information.

In other news, we welcome back our old friend, Yossi Feigenson.  For those new members who do not remember Yossi, he had a wildly popular column and was widely loved by our readers.  This week, we are delighted to welcome Yossi back for the debut of his new column, Things of Value.  WELCOME BACK YOSSI!!!

Next week...it's November already...election week in the U.S. and a new month of quality articles for your information, education and enjoyment!

All my best,

Adam

BUILDING PROFITABLE LASTING BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS: Discover the 80/20 Rule!

Bonnie Ross-Parker
Founder and CEO

Discover the 80/20 Rule!

I know, you think it’s 20% of the people do 80% of the work OR maybe you’ve heard or read it under different descriptions. Well, I’ve decided to give 80/20 a new relationship: 80% is showing up and 20% is following up!

Others often comment they see me everywhere! IF someone sees me everywhere, doesn’t that imply they’re there, too? The truth is, I do participate often at events in my area. They may be info seminars, after hours, mixers, regular monthly membership meetings or any other networking opportunity that I believe can produce value. I like to show up. Connecting with friends, colleagues and creating new relationships are reasons to show up. You never know who you will meet and the difference you can make it someone’s life. You never know who you will meet and the difference that person can make it your life. The reality is, if you don’t show up, you’ll never know!

Sometimes, just the thought of changing outfits, getting in late day traffic and being sociable is enough to cause me to think twice about showing up. Would I rather switch into my sweats, engage in a book or watch mindless television after a full day? Sometimes, simply “YES”. Well, what usually happens is I force myself to get up, get out and get going. With few exceptions, it results in my having a great time. I’m seen – I’m engaged – and I undoubtedly create new contacts. When I get in the car, revisit the event, this is the familiar message that fills my head: ‘This is what you would’ve missed had you NOT shown up!’

Showing up is a critical part of building one’s business. How can anyone expect to be ‘top of mind’ if you remain invisible? Sure, there’s social media, email and phone. They are, without question, relevant in today’s crowded and competitive marketplace. However, for me, showing up – creating conversations – being present for possibilities is 80% of the marketing game. What’s the point of showing up if you don’t want to be remembered AND if you don’t follow up with the contacts you meet when something of mutual benefit is possible? One of the most significant strategies you can implement right now is follow up.

Reward is in the follow up. Rarely does anything of monetary value happen between chicken wings, artichoke spread on crackers and wine. The social, networking scene for the most part is a crowded event where conversations are loud, business cards are exchanged (After all, you need a real estate agent, a new insurance agent or financial planner right now, correct?) and the way people think business is conducted. I approach it differently. Who might I meet – the few treasures I can discover among the crowd –I think I can assist or might be genuinely interested in speaking with me and learning about my organization? I don’t push a business card on anyone and only ask someone for their card if I believe there’s something of value for both of us. I request someone’s card when I intend to follow up! Notice, I didn’t say, if.

Don’t get me wrong. Although money may not directly result from a developing relationship, there’s a much better chance for it to happen when a conversation continues, a thank you note is sent, an invitation to a future event is offered or a referral is given. Your ability and commitment to consistently follow up builds your reputation and that’s worth its weight in gold. The respect you create, the relationships you cultivate and the professionalism you deliver will ultimately result in business.

You must show up and follow up if you want to distinguish yourself from your competitors. By doing so, you are strengthening and building your share of business. Don’t believe me. Test it for yourself and let me know. You have the last quarter of 2010 to prove me right or wrong.

BUILDING PROFITABLE LASTING BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS: Conquering MONSTERS…Business & Personal

Bonnie Ross-Parker
Founder and CEO

Conquering MONSTERS…Business & Personal

Contributing Author: Terry Arrington

Some time back, I was listening to a teleseminar on coaching. It was free…I love free not because I’m cheap. What makes free so powerful and profitable is the giving, sowing, seeding, paying it forward or whatever you call it in your belief system. Anyway, the call was suppose to last one hour. After 50 minutes, the presenter was still giving what I call fluff, fillers and stories. I was not hearing what was in the advertisement about the seminar. Where were the how-tos they promised? Quite frankly, I was annoyed because it felt like the old bait and switch. I had to make a decision…do I cut my losses and hang up or stay until the end to hear if what I wanted to know would be covered? I decided to stick it out and I’m so glad I did. She finally said something that was an “aha” moment for me. She explained the reason for the 50 minutes of what seemed like useless mumbo jumbo. Her goal was to confront and deal with some mental blocks about coaching.

It occurred to me in preparation for my seminar on conquering contacts management that having the how-to strategy was only part of the puzzle. If it’s true that what we think determines how far we go, the attendees needed a mental strategy to complement the how-tos. In reality, bad thinking could sabotage success even with great how-tos. The most valuable information I could impart was how to get their thinking straight so that when life happened (and I knew it would) practicing good contacts management would not be derailed.

The mental strategy for conquering what follows is relevant for any MONSTER in life…business and personal:
  • Make a decision…every good strategy starts with making a quality decision. Whether it’s organizing your contacts or exercising, it requires determination to conquer.

  • Make a commitment...it is dedication to see a goal through to completion that gets results. Remaining steadfast in spite of circumstances is sometimes hard but doable.

  • Be accountable…this may require finding a trusted confidante, business associate or thought partner to help you remain on course. On the days you feel like giving up, you need someone to encourage and jerk the slack out of you.

  • Remain persistent…who doesn’t know the tale of the tortoise and the hare? It’s a great lesson on the kind of results you can achieve by staying in the race until the end. Some days it looks like you’re behind everybody and catching up appears hopeless. In those times, remember the tortoise and keep persevering to reach your goal.

  • Respect the process…there is a mentality in our culture that success should come without paying your dues. Most things gotten in haste tend not to last! Going through the process teaches us to how to handle success. Don’t fight that…learn to flow with it and milk it for the wisdom, knowledge and development it brings.
Here’s a promise I can guarantee…whenever you decide to go to another level in your business or personal life, challenge will come! It’s just the way that it is. That resistance is building and developing you and your business. It’s unlocking your creativity and causing you to think outside the box. If you allow it to run its course, you will reap positive and lasting benefits!
