CREATING AND MANAGING EFFECTIVE TEAMS: What Do You Want to Focus on For Your Organization? Problems or Solutions?

Creating and Managing Effective Teams with David Muraco

Here is the bottom line:
• What would your organization look like if you only sought out solutions?
• Imagine how powerful your team would be if you were armed with this skill from the get go, what would you be able to accomplish now?
• Where could you go with your organization now if you decide to develop this skill today?

Ask any 6 to 10 year old what they want to be when they grow up and you will get all different types of answers. From playing Professional Baseball, to Ballerina, Doctor, maybe even President of the United States. The reason for this is simple, they have unlimited power. The power to believe in the unknown, the power to know that anything is possible. So why is it, that more than 95% never reach those dreams? They get the unfortunate reality of everyone telling them how hard it is instead of explaining to them what needs to be done to get there.

I see it every single day from multiple clients coming to me with problem after problem and saying simple I don't know what I am going to do. We have become a society that more times than not, solely focuses on the problem or challenge never the solution. We have been trained to constantly dive deeper and deeper into the problems in our organizations, and never to seek out solutions. Trying to solve problems only creates more problems. Solutions allow you to put something in place to eliminate problems. Now I am not saying that you will never have problems again. But with a solution in place you have a reference point to make better, a chance to continually evolve and grow to handle more and more issues as they arrive. Ask yourself these 3 questions;

You have the opportunity right now to focus on the solution. Question is, do you want to? Or do you want to keep doing what you are doing right now? The definition of insanity is: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. How can you get where you want to go, grow your life or business to the next level without doing something different? Embrace that inner child and know that you also have unlimited power to do and be anything you want to be, never let anyone take that away from you.

Remember be positive, be real and live your life In The Zone.

CREATING AND MANAGING EFFECTIVE TEAMS: Are You a Role Model?

Creating and Managing Effective Teams with David Muraco

Some say all public figures are role models. Others say that it is parents that are the only true role models. I say that “we are all role models.” The definition of role model: "A person who serves as an example, whose behavior is emulated by others." Tell me, if you were the CEO of a company and wanted your employees to act a certain way, wouldn't it mean by definition, that you would emulate a behavior that serves as an example to them? Or do you think it means you are 'the boss' and you can do whatever it is you want. This is more like the approach 'do as I say not as I do'.

Role models come in all shapes, sizes, job titles, and expertise. The true example of being a role model is not just holding others to a higher standard, but more importantly is holding ourselves to a higher standard. The mark we leave on this world, long after we're gone, is not measured by money or worldly possessions; it is measured by the examples we leave behind for others to follow.

Whether you are a 15 year old high school baseball player or a 64 year old worker at the post office, you have an obligation to be a role model to the people you come into contact with daily. Because whether you believe it or not, you make someone's day better or worse far more often than any athletes and musicians we hold in such high regard. Making the decision to be a role model is only as hard as we make it. I am not here to say you need to be on the evening news doing something huge. That is not it at all. Being a role model is so much more than that. It is doing something that no one knows about but you. Take the time to help someone, explain something to someone, and to show someone you care. Those examples will be measured far more than anything else in life.

Remember be positive, be real and live your life In The Zone.

CREATING AND MANAGING EFFECTIVE TEAMS: Critical Component to time management?

Creating and Managing Effective Teams with David Muraco

From the moment we are born the race is on. If you pause long enough and listen you can even hear it! The clock on the wall waits for no one. It doesn’t care how old you are, what color your skin is, or even how intelligent you are. It keeps on ticking day in and day out. So the question I ask you is this. What are you waiting for?

• You see, that clock doesn’t care that you’re scared.

• It doesn’t care how you see yourself (too old or too young).

• It doesn’t care that you don’t make the money you want to make.

Time waits for no one! So many times I hear top level executives and CEO’s say, "I have no time for me," or "I have no time to get the things done I need to." The truth is they have no time because it is not important enough for them to make the time. Of all things outside of our control, time is the one thing we can control, if we choose to.

What is time? Whatever we want it to be. Time for a bike ride in the company of our kids; maybe time to work ON your business long after you closed the doors for the day. Time is one of the most precious things we have in this world.

More often than not we treat it like garbage, something that can be thrown away over and over and over again. But if we look at it, for what it truly is, (a precious resource) then I am sure we would use it a lot more wisely. Study after study show that lack of discipline of time management is the number one cause for lack of growth in organizations.

The point to this is simple regardless of how long you been in business: you have all the time you want the moment you realize that you must empower your team to strive for effective time management. Make good use of this precious resource because one night you will go to bed and then wake up and it will be 30 years later. Then your statement won't be: "I don’t have enough time?" Instead you'll ask: "Where did all the time go?"

Remember: Be positive, be real, and live your life In The Zone.

CREATING AND MANAGING EFFECTIVE TEAMS: We know how to talk to our Team, but do we know how to communicate with them?

Creating and Managing Effective Teams

with Dave Muraco

Often times we say we know how to communicate, with our co-workers and team members. The truth is we know how to talk a lot, not really how to communicate. There are many different ideas, and the research done on this topic shows information that is truly shocking when you look at the numbers.

  • 55% of impact is determined by body language—postures, gestures, and eye contact.

  • 38% by the tone of our voice.

  • 7% is the spoken word.

This breakdown can bring new light to the way we communicate on so many levels with our teams. Whether we are the CEO, a department head or manager, communicating effectively will either lead or destroy the team. How many times have you felt misunderstood and could not figure out why. Maybe the reason is that when you said whatever it is you said, you were portraying some type of body language that made the other person you were talking to think something totally different. Or you are trying to talk with someone when on the phone with someone else. The list goes on and on, and until you stop and take a good hard long look at this issue, you will be talking and never communicating. In order for you to work more on communication you need to apply these few simple steps:

  1. Listen – you can never truly communicate with someone if you do not hear them talking to you.

  2. Process - take time to reflect on the information before answering the questions

  3. Discuss - make sure your co-workers and teammates have the opportunity to be able to talk to you about anything.

  4. Follow through – is everything, when you deliver on your promises you are saying you are someone of integrity and character and that goes along way in Team Building.

  5. Come from the heart – when it is your time to communicate back to someone nothing is more powerful than speaking from your heart. It allows you the opportunity to build trust and show them you really mean business.

Bottom line to all of this is quite interesting: People don't care how much you know, they want to know how much you care. Communication is the key element that allows you to build that winning team.

Remember be positive, be real and live your life In The Zone.

A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN: New Writers Join TNNW, Part 2

Last week, we announced that December will be a month of giving and in that spirit of giving, we introduced two new writers: Teri Aulph with
Beyond the Cubicle - Corporate Culture and Dick Brown with
Venture Finance - Reality vs. Rumor.

This week, we introduce three new writers: a baseball coach, a hotelier and a former presidential appointee - in the immortal words of Adam Sandler, "not too shabby".

First up is David Muraco of In the Zone Coaching of Oneida, NY. Dave, aside from being a high school baseball coach is a life coach and has his own blog radio program called Coaching in the Zone. Additionally, he is an online columnist for the Utica Daily News. Dave submits his first article for your review this week from his new column: Creating and Managing Effective Teams.

Next, from Phoenix, AZ is John J. Hogan,
Ph.D. CHA CHE MHS. John brings to TNNW over 35 years experience in the Hotel Industry and has both worked for several well-known chains as well as taught as an adjunct professor. John, aside from being a weekly columnist in several industry publications is the author of Lessons from the Field - a Common Sense Approach to Effective Hotel Sales and is currently writing his second book. John brings his knowledge to you as he debuts his column: Lessons from the Hotel Industry.

Last (but certainly not least) is Linda de Seife, owner of LRD Communications out of Greenwich, CT. Linda specializes in speechwriting and ghostwriting. Linda is a "Beltway" veteran, serving on the legislative and policy staffs of such Capital Hill dignitaries as Hon. Bob Walker (PA), Hon. Olympia Snowe (ME) and Hon. Alan Steelman (TX). Additionally, she was the chief-of-staff for Hon. Don Ritter (PA) and was a Presidential Appointee at the USDA during the Reagan Administration. Linda presents her new monthly column Balancing Healthcare, Public Policy and Politics this week.

Last week I was interviewed by my friend and colleague Jeff Klein of Klein Creative and his co-host, Kathy Hines on their weekly morning radio show Business Networking Brunch (www.BizNetBrunch.com) on Rational Radio 1360 AM out of Dallas. The interview is now available and can be heard by clicking here.

All my best,

Adam
