BUILDING PROFITABLE LASTING BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS: Be the Bearer of Gifts

Bonnie Ross-Parker
Founder and CEO

You possess a wealth of ideas and information that you can gift to others.

by guest Contributor Diana Nichols

(Chapter excerpted from the book, 42 Rules of Effective Connections)

One of the easiest ways to really connect with someone, and make an impression, is to give them a gift that has real value to them.

Notice the last part of the sentence: ”value to them.” Many times we give gifts that mostly have value to us – promotional items with our logo on them, business cards, brochures, etc. Occasionally, we give away free samples or coupons. These are good things, but hardly memorable. And most are seen as self-serving.

The gifts I’m referring to are not tangible things, but rather ideas. You possess a wealth of ideas and information that you can gift to others. You know people, you’ve had many life experiences, you have knowledge about your business. There’s a lot of stuff in your memory banks!

Any marketing guru will tell you that one of your basic tools is a list of tips and techniques that you should share freely. I’ll bet you can lay your hands on one, or ten, such lists right now. This is a great place to start in creating your “gift basket.”

Before you run off to the copy machine to make 1000 copies, let me say that the most effective way to give these away is one at a time, in your one-on-one conversations. (The conversation can be in person, on the phone, or via email.)

Look over the lists of tips. Find a few that are really meaningful, and not as widely known as others. These are the ones you want to use. Memorize and be ready to call them up.

Now, let’s add some more gifts to your repertoire. Looking over your “tips” list, are there any other tidbits that you’ve learned that have been especially helpful?

How about ideas or techniques you use in other areas of your life? Ways you manage your daily life that perhaps not everyone uses. Bet you have a few of those. They don’t have to be your original idea, just things that work for you – or someone you know.

Keep going. . .

You can add all the people you know well enough to be able to recommend them.

Also, make a list (mental or physical) of the helpful books and articles you’ve read lately.

Wow, your basket’s getting bigger! You have a lot of gifts to share.

And the best part is that now you have created the basket, you’ll be on the lookout for new ideas and people to add to it. It will just keep growing!

So what do you do with all these gifts? Look for opportunities to give them away.

When you make a connection, listen carefully to the other person. If you are really paying attention, you will often hear a clear clue as to what you can share that might be valuable to them. If you don’t – ask.

What’s your biggest challenge right now?

What would make you more successful?

How can I help you?

Use your own words, and be sincere. Even if you still can’t find anything really pertinent to give, at the very least you have given them the gift of caring enough to ask!

Just a few words about sharing your personal knowledge and experiences. The value in your experience for someone else is not the “story” about it. The who, where, how, and why are only relevant to you. It’s the in the what that the value lies for them. Just the facts, Ma’am. Share the lesson learned, the result, the essence. Make it short and to the point.

And finally, make sure your gift sounds like a gift – not like advice: Have you ever thought of…? I’ve had success with… Have you read…? Do you know…?

Giving is, after all, the best way to receive!

BUILDING PROFITABLE LASTING BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS – Keep a Curious Mind

Bonnie Ross-Parker
Founder and CEO

Curiosity is a vital, risk free networking tool.

by guest Contributor Susan Brown

(Chapter excerpted from the book "42 Rules of Effective Connections")
I grant you that being curious can have dangerous side effects. You have probably heard the phrase “curiosity killed the cat” and read about the exploits of Curious George the famous monkey whose extreme inquisitiveness spawned mayhem and mishap. However, I assure you that curiosity is a vital, risk free networking tool.

I love trying to discover people’s hidden passions. I once asked a woman at a Joy of Connecting meeting what she loved to do but was not doing. When she said teaching I knew I had found a co-facilitator for one of my workshops for not only was she a knowledge expert in her field but she had a passion waiting to be tapped. That single response yielded a great return on my investment of one curious question.

I am also really curious about people’s values. At a networking luncheon I found myself next to a woman who had just reached the upper echelons of Mary Kay Cosmetics and had the coveted pink car to prove it. I have to admit that I initially thought that we would have very little to talk about as our companies, coaching and cosmetics, seemed worlds apart. But then, thankfully, my curiosity about her success kicked in: “What do you do that makes you so successful?”

She perked up and told me that her success was due to her persistency, passion and practice. Those memorable answers came straight from her heart revealing her values. By finding out what really “drives” her success, I was rewarded with a deeper connection, a great success story and several success qualities to integrate into my Boot Camps for Success.

Cu-ri-ous
Adjective
1. Eager to learn or know; inquisitive.
The nosy neighbor who may be shunned for being too “eager to learn or know” would be welcomed for this “virtuous” trait at a networking event. Elias Baumgarten in Curiosity as a Moral Virtue says:
Curiosity is especially important in deepening one’s care and concern for another person because even in a close relationship, much that one needs to know and understand about another person in order to care deeply will not be apparent without active seeking.

(Excerpt from essay published in International Journal of Applied Philosophy, Fall 2001)
How can you use your curiosity to develop more interesting and deeper relationships?
It’s perfectly fine to start with the usual kinds of questions we all ask:
What do you do?
How long have you been in business?
How did you get started?
Who are your clients?
After one or two of these questions, shift into the land of curiosity where the treasures are hiding. I have found it much easier to connect with and care for people when they answer questions about their values, dreams, desires, passions or challenges:
What has been your greatest job challenge? How did you overcome it?
What do you like best about what you do?
To what do you attribute your success?
What do you do in your job that gives you the most energy?
What are you hoping to get out of this event (networking, conference, class)?

Don’t be afraid to show your care by asking curious, thoughtful questions that stimulate meaningful conversations. You will be rewarded by responses that are like puzzle pieces waiting to be connected to reveal more of the real, whole person.

If you are willing to go confidently into uncharted territories with a detective mindset and a caring attitude you will enhance your connections. I guarantee that by exercising a curious mind not only will you survive (unlike the poor cat) but your relationships will thrive.

KALÖN WOMEN: The "I" Pronoun

Guest Columnist: Sandra Levitin

Who am I?

What do I want?

How did I get so lost?

When do I come first?

Where do I start?

These are questions that I get on a regular basis from friends, family and our Kalön Women across the world. They all have to do with “self-discovery,” which seems to be a hot topic of discussion these days within the world of boomer women. Personal growth is most often a slow and gradual process, and it can be difficult to recognize the magnitude of the changes taking place in our lives when we are too close to it. It is so important that we regularly acknowledge our ongoing growth and reward ourselves for the many wonderful steps of self-improvement we have accomplished. When we take a hard look at our own progress, we need never feel that we are wavering between past achievements and the realization of future goals.

If we look closely at our lives, we may see that much of what brings us pleasure in the present is representative of the ambitions of our past that we worked so hard to attain. At one time, the abundance we enjoy currently likely seemed like a far-off dream. Now it is simply reality—a reality we created through our diligence, passion, and unflagging determination. Whether our progress is fast or slow, we deserve to congratulate ourselves for our successes.

To remind me of the insights I have gained with time, I need to temporarily adopt an outsider’s perspective and carefully consider how my life in the present differs from the sequence of experiences I’ve lived through in the past. My friends often tell me, “Sandra, look at what you have accomplished in just two years.”

With that in mind, I created a written list, of those strengths, aptitudes, and inner qualities I now attribute to myself, and it helps me understand that I am not the same person I was one year ago, five years ago, or 10 years ago. My attitudes, opinions, and values were markedly different, and these differences can be attributed to my willingness to accept that I still have much to learn. I used to have difficulty giving myself credit for these changes, but then I think about the goals I have realized, the lives I have touched, the wisdom I have acquired, and the level of enlightenment I attained over the past years.

Recognizing that my own growth is neither boastful nor immodest was very hard for me because I came from the old school of “we” as most women have done in their family life as well as in their careers. It is a natural fact of life and becomes a powerful motivational force when we celebrate our own growth. Knowing that I am brighter, stronger, and more grounded than I once was I can look forward to the changes to come. In acknowledging my own growth, I can build a sturdy foundation upon which I can continue to blossom well into the future.

What is it about us, as women that keep us from using the “I” pronoun more often?

BLUE THING #1: TNNWC Surveys, Analyses and Findings

Why? Because people are absolutely obsessed with what other people are thinking.

Why? Because feedback helps us to refine our strategies and change our trajectories.

Why? Because The National Networker Companies want you and your business to know your client audience and to constantly monitor changes in their attitudes, buying habits and needs.

(cue drum roll...)

NEW SURVEY: TNNWC SURVEY 6.1

We have a new survey for all willing participants. It is comprised of one simple question where you get to rate the significance of a factor on a scale of 0 to 10. The polls will close on June 19th.

Please take a few moments and state your opinion (the survey is anonymous) by clicking on the following link: http://bit.ly/TNNWCsurvey6part1

Here's a preview of what this survey is about:

TNNWC Survey 6.1 : How Important Is This Factor?

How important a role does this factor (below) play in determining your success and your value as a leader or manager of an emerging enterprise? This factor was taken from TNNWC Survey 6: A Self-Evaluation:

"Do you know your three greatest (e.g., most exceptional) strengths? Note: These strengths can be from any aspect of your personality, technical skills, talents, etcetera."

Rate this factor in terms of its significance by assigning it a value from 0 to 10, where 0 is "of no significiance," and where 10 would be "of the greatest level of significance."

Once again -- we'd be delighted if you would particpate in this survey. It will likely take you less than five minutes to complete. And you will be playing a part in the collaborateive effort to build a great self-evaluation/ self-assessment tool for all of us to use!

Click on: http://bit.ly/TNNWCsurvey6part1

Thank you. You opinions not only count -- they help us to build better tools and services for everyone's benefit.

TNNW SURVEY #6 RESPONSES ARE IN!

(Polls have now closed at this writing: 04.27.2010 )

TNNW Survey #6: Take Your Own Personal "Human Asset Value" Inventory.

---------------

TNNW SURVEY # 6: Self-Evaluation
RESPONSES, ANALYSIS and COMMENTARY
Publication Date: 04.27.2010

A. The Introduction: A Review of the Survey Presentation.

You bring your automobile in for an inspection to determine if it needs repairs. You check your investment portfolio to see how well your assets are performing. You review your bank statement to be certain that you can cover your bills. You appraise your property. You prepare balance sheets for your businesses. Comment: It might be a good idea to take a Personal Asset Value Inventory -- a self-appraisal -- from time to time. Start today. Invest a bit of time in taking an honest look at yourself...strong points, weak points, all points. What you reveal to yourself in this exercise might help you to make some refinements, and to better plan for a happier, more fulfilling and prosperous future.

We have not assigned "weights" or "priorities" to any factors, and there is no grading. Once the results are in, we will conduct another survey to assign weights to the various factors, so that you will have a means of rating yourself in comparison to others. But for the moment, your answers to the survey will just provide you with some food for thought...and thinking is good exercise; the more you use your mind, the stronger it becomes.

You'll be glad that you made this self-investment. And we at THE NATIONAL NETWORKER COMPANIES™ thank you for your participation. Now let's get on with the collaborative process of helping each other to be more successful.

It is self-evaluation time. We must do this before we can evaluate others effectively.

Please be advised that the survey contains 45 questions...so be prepared to dedicate some time to thinking about each question, and answer honestly -- never try to fool yourself.

Relax, focus and enjoy the adventure of self-discovery.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

C. The Survey Responses.

There were 71 total respondents, each of whom completed the entire survey. The time that it took, on the average, for any respondent to complete the survey was 47 minutes, or an average answer rate of approximately 1 minute per question. By contemporary standards, this was a long and elaborate survey that required time, effort and introspective focus to complete. We at TNNWC are thoroughly delighted with the number or respondents. The non-scientific implication might be that the survey topic was one that many considered to be of importance or benefit.

To view the actual survey responses in terms of the percentages of respondents selecting each of the multiple choice answers to any of the given 45 multiple choice questions, simply click on the following link http://www.mediafire.com/?zggyybmowgy for a complete download. Since the survey consisted of such a large number of questions, if would create multiple computer crashes or a somnambulistic wave of drooling lethargy if we were to print out the results here. Having said this, please do take a look at the download. You will find the results informative, but not shocking.

When evaluating these responses or the responses to any self-evaluation questionnaire, please bear in mind the areas of bias which will tend to distort the results. Firstly, there is survey presenter’s bias, which has to do with any or all of the following variables: the selection (inclusions, omissions and emphasis) of questions; the wording of questions; the answer choices and their wording; and, the ordering of the questions. Every pollster or survey-taker has an inherent bias which will influence the very structure of the questionnaire, and therefore, the responses and their implications. It is a challenge to minimize this bias, especially in a situation where certain results are either hoped for or anticipated while designing the survey.

Secondly, there is a respondent’s bias which has to do with the ego-driven disparity between what the respondent actually thinks of himself or herself, and what the respondent would like to think of himself or herself. This is, even in a totally anonymous survey, such as this one, a deeply ingrained psychic self-defense mechanism. We would simply like to think the best of ourselves, so our results tend to reflect more “socially responsible,” “academically correct,” and “proper expected conduct,” in any given set of circumstances or given any choice of action. A classic example of this is in the case of a question along the lines of “If you were driving to a meeting and running a bit late, would you stop your car to check up a motorist whose automobile was pulled over on the shoulder of the road, and whose head was hanging out the driver’s side window?”

The responses to the above question would likely indicate a great deal more compassion and concern than might otherwise be exhibited when confronted with such a situation in reality. There is an amazing psychological/ subconscious phenomenon at work here – there is a presence within each of us that views us as if we were assessing a third party. While it interferes with our accuracy in filling out questionnaires, it is a useful self-correction tool if properly cultivated and harnessed. It certainly warrants exploration and experimentation.

Getting back to TNNW Survey #6, when the responses are converted to presentation as area charts, they are even a bit more interesting. Graphically presented data are easier for most readers to grasp, because we tend to process pictures a great deal more rapidly and memorably than when we try to derive meanings from words and numbers. To use a cliché, a picture may well be worth a thousand words. [Interjected Humor … especially if it is a photograph taken by a private investigator in a matrimonial case!]

To see the statistical results depicted as area charts, you get a download by clicking on this link: http://www.mediafire.com/?ttn1zj22jyh .

Because of the extensive nature of this self-exploration survey, we will be reviewing each of the 45 separate aspects of crucial self-knowledge and personal development individually while we continue to carry out other polls and surveys.

Welcome to the commencement of … EXPLORATION: 45 CRUCIAL ASPECTS OF SELF-KNOWLEDGE AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT.

---------------

Note: Now that the Survey is closed and the results have been published, if you have some of your own additional self-assessment tools or criteria to share (by way of example: certain categorical questions which were not among the 45 in the Survey, but which you believe should have been included in over to make the self-assessment process even more effective) and you would like to include them in a follow-up addition to the Survey, please write to us at http://bit.ly/contactTNNW, being sure to include the words “Survey #6 Suggestion” in the subject line of your correspondence.

If you would like, we will give you credit for your suggested question right in the Survey itself. And in the event that your recommended categorical question is published in an updated and upgraded version of the Survey, just let us know if you’d like to be named as a Contributor to the Collaborative Survey Creation Team in your initial correspondence to us. In this manner, we’ll know well enough in advance. Of course, you may remain anonymous if you would like.

Other newsletters would give you only one product/service of the week. Some might extend themselves a bit to give you two. However, here at The National Networker, we offer you THREE.

For those of you who are arithmophiles (a lingovation), this is 300% of what the competition offers.

Here they are:

1. NEWS RELEASES and a vastly-expanded PR capability: The most cost-effective way of immediately reaching a giant audience.

Click on http://www.thenationalnetworker.com/newsrelease.shtml.

We do not simply offer you what PR Web and PR Newswire offer you. They are merely broadcast media, unless you request that they do a great deal more. Then, watch your wallet! We are a full-service, full-focus operation.

We do it all: headline it, get it written, get it edited, stuff it with keywords and hyperlinks, submit it to the right geographical and vertical markets, track it, re-publish it, and more! We use those other newswire services as broadcasters, too. (They have a tremendous market domination.) But we get to your target market with a surgical strike, and maximum MEANINGFUL exposure. We will not send out a useless raft of press releases which will either be ignored or unpublished. We get you published in the right places so that you get the optimal results. We do not "scatter gun." We help you structure a meaningful thematic news release campaign, and we strike with precision.

BLUE THING #3: Amazing New Facts and Statistics

AND NOW...
A compilation of utterly useless information brought to you by www.imao.us and THE NATIONAL NEWSPICKER™.

Following is a veritable cesspool teeming with trivial items to use in pick-up lines in bars, to fill awkward silences in credit committee meetings, and to forward (via email) to the spam filters of Oprah, Bill O’Reilly, Bono, Paris Hilton, Harry Potter [either one], any member of the board of directors of Bank of America, the president or prime minister of your home nation, or one or more of your many friends, family members and people who have far too much time on their hands.

Here goes:

Commemorating the State of Rhode Island enacting the first law declaring slavery on May 18, 1652 we proudly present:

Humorous Facts About Rhode Island

Rhode Island became the 13th state on May 29, 1790. It was originally founded by refugees from Connecticut and Massachusetts who thought that having double consonants in a state's name looked snooty and pretentious.

The state flag of Rhode Island is two-sided. One side features a white background with thirteen gold stars encircling a gold anchor. The other side is pure white and was inspired by the French battle flag.

The state motto of Rhode Island is "Size Doesn't Matter".

Rhode Island license plates has black letters on a light blue background and the slogan "Clamtastic!"

Rhode Island is the smallest state in the US, measuring a mere 48 by 37 miles. Think of it as the old maid in America's popcorn bucket.

Rhode Island never ratified the 18th amendment (Prohibition). They were going to, but they ran out of gas. They had a flat tire. They didn't have enough money for cab fare. Their tuxes didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole their cars. There was an earthquake! A terrible flood! Locusts! It wasn't their fault! I swear to God!

Jeremiah Johnson of Newport, Rhode Island, was the first person to receive a jail sentence for speeding in an automobile. His sentence was later reduced to picking up after all the horses that his reckless driving had scared the crap out of.

Polo was first played in the US in Newport, Rhode Island. For those not familiar with the game, it's sorta like hockey, except with more horses and - if you can imagine this - even fewer black people.

The Flying Horse Carousel in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, is the oldest in the US. Since it was built in 1876, it has been ridden more times than Madonna.

NOTE: The previous statement should be reviewed for accuracy on a day-by-day basis.

The first circus in the US started in 1774 in Newport, Rhode Island. The ceaseless bickering between the Fat Lady and the Dog Faced Boy is frequently cited by historians as the inspiration for America's two-party political system.

Newport, Rhode Island is home to the Tennis Hall of Fame, which honors such widely-known tennis stars as... um... you know... that one guy... what's-his-face. And I think there's a couple chicks in there, too. Whatever. Does anybody ACTUALLY follow tennis?

Songwriter George M. Cohan was born in Providence, Rhode Island. His big hit "I'm A Yankee Doodle Dandy", was translated for the British stage as "I'm An American Loony Poofter".

In 1953, St. Mary's church in Newport, Rhode Island was the site of the marriage between John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier. It was a fairy-tale wedding, right up until the point where an especially drunken Ted Kennedy mistook the confessional for a men's room stall.

Rhode Island is famous for making silverware and fine jewelry. I personally have no idea what these are, since I'm more of a plastic spork and rubber bracelet kinda guy.

The roof of Providence, Rhode Island's New England Pest Control building is home to a 58-foot-long blue termite, named "Nibbles Woodaway" - the world's largest bug. The second largest bug is any given Florida cockroach. Yeah, I know they're technically "Palmetto Bugs", but that's not much consolation when one pours out of your box of Wheaties in the morning.

At the Point Judith corrosion test site, various materials sit exposed for years to determine the effects of sun and salt air. Tests show that the thing that falls apart most rapidly under adverse circumstances is a Republican Congress.

Rhode Island was the first state to strike a blow against England during the Revolutionary War. The English ship "Gaspee" was sunk in Narragansett Bay in 1772 after being hit by a cow that had been catapulted from a nearby castle.

Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, wrote the original draft of the First Amendment, guaranteeing freedom of speech, the press, religion, and public assembly. Sadly omitted in the final draft was the guarantee of hot-chicks-only nude beaches.

Samuel Slater of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, invented the water-powered cotton mill in 1790. Southern plantation owners opposed the machine, fearing that it's high efficiency and productivity could spark a wave of low self-esteem amongst the slaves.

The first British troops sent to crush the Revolution landed in Newport, Rhode Island in 1773. They were themselves crushed by a giant wooden rabbit that had been catapulted from a nearby castle.

Atop the State House in Providence, Rhode Island, stands the statue of "The Independent Man". Standing above him and wielding a rolling pin is the statue of "The Nagging Wife".

The first girl born to American colonist parents is buried in Little Compton, Rhode Island. The first boy is also buried there, under a marker engraved with his last words, "Look! Friendly Indians!"

The White Horse Tavern in Newport, Rhode Island is the oldest operating tavern in the US. When it first opened in 1673, the labelling of the men's and women's restrooms as "Stallions" and "Mares" was still considered original and clever.

Portsmouth, Rhode Island, is home to the oldest schoolhouse in the US. Built in 1716, some of George Washington's original spitballs can still be seen stuck to the ceiling.

The Rhode Island Red Monument in Adamsville, Rhode Island, honors the famous poultry breed, and is the largest chicken-related monument in the world except for the Eiffel Tower.

Built in 1763, Newport, Rhode Island's Touro Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in the US and contains the oldest Torah in North America. And no, it's NOT because they're too cheap to buy a new one. Don't be anti-Semitic.

Pelham Street in Newport, Rhode Island was the first street in America to use gas-illuminated streetlights in place of the burning witches common to New England in that era.

Rhode Island has a population of just over one million people, all of whom know that a "coffee-cup salute" is a shout-out to local businesses by Channel 10's Frank Coletta, and NOT a euphemism for an unspeakably degrading sexual act.

Don't try asking anyone from Massachusetts about it, though.
