Filmmaker's Tool Kit: Creating a Movie with Web 2.0, by Josh Catone

In this post I will show you the tools you need to go from idea to finished film using as many web 2.0 products as possible. In June, I wrote about 8 online video editors that could be used to slice together your masterpiece. But there's more to being Kubrick than editing. You have to write your film, cast it, shoot it, edit it, and distribute it to the masses. Web 2.0 applications and services can help with (nearly) all of these phases.

The tool kit below will help you take your idea from start to finish and fulfill your dream of winning an Oscar (okay, maybe not, but you have to start somewhere). This is film making on a budget.

Writing

Every great movie starts as a screenplay. Writing a screenplay generally requires specialized software to help you adhere to a set format. A copy of popular professional screenwriting software like Final Draft will run you about $180; my favorite screenwriting software, Sophocles, costs $120. Fortunately web applications and opensource are here to help.

  • celtx is a great opensource screenwriting suite that runs on Windows, OS X, and Linux. It feels a lot like more expensive pieces of software, and includes a web service that lets writers share and collaborate on screenplays.
  • If you want something more web-based, then Plotbot may be more up your alley. Plotbot is an online screenwriting application that allows you to share your workspace with as many other writers as you'd like. This means, for example, that your film's producers could give notes to the writer while working on draft revisions in a completely online environment.
  • For Mac users, another low-cost solution is the elegant, downloadable Storyist software, which costs $59.

Cyberian's Note: This is only the beginning of a great posting. Please read and pass along.

Mrs. Mo's Networking

Cyberian's Note: For our many readers in the Princeton, New Jersey area, here's a "great blog about stuff".
-Wdk

Fashion, Food, and Fun. All things New Jersey...and more!

This past week or so I've let up on the daily blogging. Partly because we are switching from Verizon to the Comcast Triple Play and haven't had Internet for a few days (I am at the library now on my new laptop). I've also had a less than exciting few weeks giving me even less to blog about.

Rob and I are in major money saving mode right now. Since I am not working full-time in the fall and have yet to pick up tutoring clients, our savings are in top priority right now. Normally, I'd be out and about, scoping out new places to eat and widow shopping. But all of that is too hard, especially when I can't spend the money. I am hoping that once school is back in session, parents will also want to get a jump-start on their children's success and give me a call! I'm also at work thinking of low cost ways to advertise my tutoring services.

I have put business cards up at whatever supermarkets allow it. I have been in touch with the private school heads in the Princeton area. I have an ad in St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church bulletin in Princeton. I even sent out 15 flyers to random professionals in the area: Lawyers, realtors, wedding planners, CPAs, etc. My next step is Direct Mailing. I know you have to spend money to make money, but I'm hesitant to dish out $300 for mailing addresses. However, the benefit of direct mailing is exactly what it sounds like. I can send flyers directly to the homes of families with students in the age range I want to work with. If I were to use this service, I can send out a flyer when the first round of grades go out and then again at the holiday break. Private schools get 2 weeks off and you know parents want to keep their kids busy, especially if grades are low. I definitely have my work cut out for me. I just hope it's not gong to be as hard as what it seems now. I hope that once the school year starts, I will start to get calls. I realize that's a passive approach, but it's one way. Another way is networking, which unfortunately, require more money.

My husband belongs to an international networking group called BNI (Business Networking International). It's actually THE largest networking organization in the world. There are numerous groups here in the Princeton area and there are a plethora of professionals who are members: lawyers, accountants, insurance reps, realtors, painters, electricians, chiropractors, etc). I have visited with Rob a few times and tried out a soon to be chartered group based out of Robbinsville. The group has many benefits and is a great way to pass your business around. Our chiropractor, Allison Scharf, is a fellow member. I can definitely get a lot out of joining, but the only problem now is the money. All groups have a member fee and right now, I need to save my money. Maybe in a few months, if business is building. But if you are someone who can afford the opportunity, look into at least visiting a chapter in your area. Networking never hurt anyone.

In addition to networking myself, I'm also busy working on ways to network my husband. Call it PR practice. He's trying to market his specialty: Estate Planning, Wills and Trusts. With my 2 semesters of "Writing for the Media" at Rider, I have some tools to help him with press releases, brochures, and the like. In addition to working for Rob and I am also busy planning events for the Bucknell Club and doing volunteer research for the Morven Museum 4th of July party in 2008. I have a lot of my plate, but very little movement at the moment. Summers are definitely slow, but I'm trying to get moving on my new career and waiting is not my forte.

So, going back to my original point of the post. Since I am in budget mode right now, my posts will have to take a little break. My ideal situation would be that I get a part-time job blogging for a local publication where I have to shop or eat or whatnot and then get reimbursed for my services. That would be great! So hey, if you're reading this and can help me out...pass me along! Hook me up! Or just wish me luck!

Face Off Orkut, by Parul Bindra

Orkut1

If the messengers of the world (the IM ones) led the way of chatting and finding new friends, social networking provided a better way of meeting people with matching interests. With the rise of social networking sites. Orkut revolutionized the way people stayed in touch.

From quite some time now, Orkut has been seeing a whole lot of popularity all over the world. With more and more people joining in daily I think Google now looks very keen changing the overall appearance of the site to enhance the entire brand image. Just a couple of days ago they introduced some new features like photo and rich content scrap, favourite videos and feeds, making communication much easier with friends and share content. They have also translated the site into 12 languages further making it easier for users to add friends globally.

Why is Orkut changing its interface?

From the past few years Orkut has been dominating social networking. After Orkut claiming the best position in this segment a lot of companies worldwide couldn’t resist grabbing a piece of action.

Orkut2

Today Orkut has realized that it’s not just a game of more features and a better software, but it’s about creating a better platform that gives a rich user experience to internet users.

As the competition soars more and more social networking sites are sky-scraping. MySpace, Linkedin and Facebook have been flooded with more users and also have been pulling a lot of user base from Orkut.

If the software and the content is not appealing, it becomes very comfortable for people to try new networking sites. So the question arised for Orkut, will they stick to their old dull site or will get a more innovative interface for a rich user experience. And there they are taking it in their stride.

How can Orkut increase their user base?

So, it looks like Orkut has changed its look finally!
But will it help them to fit in? After all, its Facebook, MySpace and more other social networking sites standing high.
My opinion is that Orkut will have to make a choice for different services than others, quite like what is not in the market today.

Internet users now look for a rich web experience in this prevailing competition. This richer experience, however, is the USP of any social networking site. The site should carry rich content and information, should be less complexed and less prone to errors.

Users now expect Social networking sites to deliver a more compelling experience with expanded offerings, improved usability, and at an absolute minimum, they expect the site to work properly regardless of their browser and system preferences. Users are growing increasingly impatient, and have zero-tolerance for sites that fail to work as expected. Consequently, when users experience site failures, they more likely try other networks.

And at last, Orkut should carry the most quality, relevant links as it wins the internet. The main aim of any social networking site is to increase their userbase. So Orkut will have to make sure to use all of the methods for enhancing their services to users to achieve reliable and lasting results.

Orkut into the Future

To Internet companies around the world, it has become more than apparent that Internet users are embracing Orkut with great enthusiasm. The Internet is becoming more than just a place to find information - it is now a place to interact, communicate, learn and opine on a wide variety of subjects. Orkut has a forum that has popped up all over the site in order for members to share information, ask questions and even form relationships. This is a trend which is not going to fade away anywhere in near future.

Orkut has a population of teenagers and middle aged people also. Every year new users join Orkut and the chain is ever growing. The bubble of Orkut has not burst and does not look like it is going to burst in near future. There are other social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook but it has kept its feet firmly planted. The trend in Orkut will not only be in social networking but also business networking.

RNIA: Are You Connected?

Issue 5, 2007 • Are You Connected?

We thought it best to share with you the progress we're making in our early formative stages:

STEERING COMMITTEE

Until a full Board of Directors is formed, it was decided that a Steering Committee serve as an interim governance body. The Committee is made up of the following members:

  • Jay Deragon, Link to Your World

  • Mike Fesler, KMA Capital Partners, INC.

  • Adam J. Kovitz, RNIA

  • Norm Myers, eFirmM

  • Margaret Orem, Execsolution, Inc.

The Committee has accomplished the following over the past few months:

  • Completing incorporation of Relationship Networking Industry Association, Inc.

  • Filing for 501(c)(6) Status

  • Launching www.RNIA.org, the main RNIA website

  • Launching RNIA's online community, thanks to Founding Member Sossoon.net and Jay Deragon

  • Adoption of RNIA's Vision, Mission and Objectives

  • Finalization and adoption of RNIA's Bylaws (available on the RNIA.org site Bylaws)

  • Developing Board Procedures and an Operations Manual

  • Initial Fundraising Strategies

  • Initial Budget

  • Developing RNIA's Founding Member Program

  • Developing Membership Dues Structure

  • Develop CBOK Group Initiatives.

Over the next few weeks, the Steering Committee will be putting its full attention on:

  • Developing and recruiting a fully-functional Board of Directors of at least 7 members

  • Continuing fundraising efforts, and

  • Continuing other recruiting activities.

CBOK GROUPS

Margaret Orem of Execsolution, Inc. and RNIA Founding Member has agreed to serve as CBOK Coordinator for RNIA. Margaret will be working with all Group Leaders and Advisors to ensure consistency of product produced and report to the Steering Committee on group progress.

Filling the gap of Employment Group Leader, now that Margaret Orem accepted her new position, is Patrica Diver of McMaster University.

The initial fourteen CBOK groups have been reworked into ten:

  1. Collaboration, led by Dan Garvin (Seamless, LLC) and Ron Sukenick (Relationship Strategies Institute)

  2. Customer-Product Relationships, led by Chuck Dennis and David Hall

  3. Education, led by Dr. Sue Barnes (Rochester Institute of Technology, Social Computing Lab)

  4. Employment, led by Patricia Diver (McMaster University)

  5. Member-based Organizations, led by Scott Forcino (ProRealEstateCity.com)
  6. Metrics, led by Chris Kuelzow (Zybic, Inc.)

  7. Organization as a Person, led by Matthew Best (Best Solutions)

  8. Principles (formerly "Practices"), led by Rick Weaver (Multicultural Business Council)

  9. Relationship with Self, led by Tia Carr Williams (Amodus Consultants), and

  10. Technology-Driven Platforms, led by Jay Deragon (Link to Your World)

Several of the groups have begun their regular conference calls and started seperate Wikis for more collaborative online work. Currently, each group has been tasked with developing five areas of improvement in their respective areas (50 in all). Margaret will be collecting these and disseminating to the RNIA Community.

Over the next months, the groups will be recruiting new members as they develop intiatives (up to five per area of improvement). The ultimate goal for each group is for the CBOK groups to continually produce best practices and recommended procedures.

WHAT CAN I DO?

Successful growth and expansion of RNIA depends upon its voluteers. Here are some suggested ways to forward a seamlessly-driven Relationship Economy:

  1. Get involved with one or more CBOK Groups - this is where all the action is! Join with other thought leaders as you take part in determining the future of the Relationship Networking Industry.

  2. Tell your friends, co-workers and associates about RNIA - using the populistic and viral nature of the internet, RNIA desires as many interested parties as possible. Whether you work for an industry giant, are a thought leader, are passionate about relationship networking or just want to be part of this new and exciting industry, WE WANT YOU!

  3. Share your thoughts and ideas with the Community - RNIA is about YOU. We want to hear from you. Do you agree with the current direction of the CBOK Groups? Do you have ideas for areas of improvement that were missed? Let us know and let your voice be heard.

  4. Become a Founding Member - our Founding Member program has been extended into the Fall Season. All Founding Members receive the following:

    • One or more years of paid membership

    • Your name or company name, plus live web link on the Founder's Board of our main website

    • Permission to use "Founding Member of RNIA" in all promotional materials

    • For more information about the Founding Member program, contact Adam J. Kovitz at (215) 945-3411 or by emailing Adam.Kovitz@RNIA.org.

  5. Pay your Membership Dues this Fall - for all others using the RNIA Community. We will be collecting membership dues this coming Fall Season. More information to follow.

IN CLOSING

We're in a rapidly-changing world. There are ever-expanding, yet more confusing ways to connect than ever before. Our hyper-networked youth and technological advances are forcing an internet society that is akin to the US's "Wild, Wild West" of the 1800s. Offline networking is not that much better and just as confusing.

Corporations, big and small, are working to make sense of this new world while end users do the same and are caught up between knowing they need to network but not knowing the best ways to do so. Our schools have still not developed the best ways to teach relationship and team building.

Isn't it time, we worked to change this?

RNIA

New world, new rules, new economy

Way Too Good for Facebook or MySpace? By Catherine Holahan

Roger Allen Conner Jr. has little use for the common folk who frequent MySpace (NWS) and Facebook -- you know, the clubs anyone can join. "A lot of social-networking sites are very low-quality," says Conner, the 22-year-old founder of a North Carolina consulting firm named SiloIQ. "The type of individuals that are on these social-networking sites are generally not well-networked themselves." Not even a business-oriented network like LinkedIn will do. To put it bluntly, Conner wants powerful friends: the kind of people who board private jets after cutting business deals. People who don't get stopped by the bouncer at New York's Bungalow 8 nightclub. People with connections who can open doors and get his company noticed. People with log-ins to aSmallWorld...

"Criticism gets you nowhere," Copyright, 2007, Ellen Cahill, M.A. –All Rights Reserved

Networkers often don’t realize how they are coming over to others. Stand back and listen to your conversations or the discussions of others a bit more.

"Do you know someone that you would like to change and improve?

Good! That is fine. I am all in favor of it. But why not begin on
yourself? From a purely selfish standpoint, that is a lot more profitable
than trying to improve others – and a lot less dangerous."

Criticizing others rarely does any good because people are not
creatures of logic, they are creatures of emotion. Very rarely will you
criticize someone and hear them respond with "Why thank you, I see you are
correct and I shall improve immediately."

No, criticism is a dangerous spark that usually brings out every
unbalanced Advisor (thoughts in your head) the other person has. When we feel attacked

(which is what being told you are wrong feels like), we usually respond in one of two
ways, 1) with hurtful emotion or 2) defensive anger. Neither of which is
productive in the least.

Can you remember a time when someone criticized you? Do you remember
how you REACTED? Did their criticism do any good? Did it inspire you to
improve? Probably not, it rarely does. How do you feel about that person
today?

As parents, we often stumble and destroy good lessons for our children
by criticizing them for their mistakes. In so doing, we create anger and
hurt directed at us, instead of letting the natural consequences of the
mistake teach the lesson.

Benjamin Franklin said his secret to success was to" speak ill of no
man and speak all the good I know of everybody." This is a good policy.

Any one can criticize, condemn and complain – and many do. But
it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving. It
is also a much smarter way to live.

Instead of criticizing, try stepping into another person’s world. Ask
them questions, find out where they are and how they feel about an issue.
Validate them as a human being by caring about what they think and feel.
As you question, you may learn things about this person which explains
the problem. You may then, have the opportunity to show up for them (not to
advise or fix them) but offer to show up for them in a different way.

This approach will lead to more solutions, improvements and change than
any amount of criticism ever could.

Now what about when someone criticizes you? You will feel the
reaction, as they trigger those Advisors in you, to defend yourself. Don’t
do it. Step back.

From a safer perspective, you should be able to see that this person
owns this problem (it is about them – not you). See this criticism as a
door into their world, instead of as an attack on you. This is a wonderful
opportunity to walk through that door into their world and find out what is
really going on. Instead of defending yourself, ask them "Tell me why you
feel that way?"

Let them get it out. Ask more questions, find out how they feel and
where these perceptions of theirs have come from. Make sure that they feel
heard and understood. (This does not mean you agree with them – This does
not mean you will give them their way) It means that you will validate them
as a person with the right to feel the way they do. You will let them feel
heard.

From here you can work on a solution to strengthen the relationship.
Whenever you are on either end of criticism – ask yourself what
your highest best self would do. Treat others as you would be treated.

Doctor Cindy Zafis – Entrepreneurial Healer
By LOUISE FLODIN, Health and Wellness Editor

Allergies and weakness

Dr. Cindy Zafis is a Chiropractor that is more than someone who adjusts the kinks out of your spine. She has refined an acupressure treatment for pollen allergies. Inside a closed glass vial are various pollens. Dr. Cindy has tray after tray of these little vials. During the testing process she places vials in your open palm, then uses muscle testing to determine weakness. She uses the O ring (place your index finger and thumb tip to tip to form a circle. Then lace the index finger and thumb of your opposite hand through the circle forming a chain. If you are allergic Dr. Cindy can gently pull your "chain" apart. If your muscles have not been "weakened" by the vial and its contents you can keep the "chain" together. No matter how macho you may be you can not maintain a finger chain when you are allergic to the substance in the vial. In cases where patients are suffering from allergies seeming to be specific to the environment around their home Dr. Cindy has them leave out a bowl of water for three days...

The Intention of Discovering Leaders
By CANDY WEBB, Network Marketing Editor

Some start their day with affirmations: "I attract positive, outgoing, entrepreneurial people to my life every day". Now that’s not bad. In fact, starting ones day with that type of affirmation could certainly increase the likelihood that you would be at least aware of the great people passing in and out of your life – that might be half of the search!

Who will you meet today?
By LINSY GUERRERO, Social Networking Editor

Do you ever wonder what people are thinking when they shake hands or even when talking on the phone? It’s funny because it seems that in today’s world of social networking, more and more relationships are created while mixing business with pleasure. Over the past few years I have seen many of these relationships prosper, but on the same token fail because of one key element: communication.

Word-of-Mouth Marketing is always Working.*
(*It just may not be working in your favor!)

By IVAN MISNER, Ph.D., Networking Success

You may be thinking: Hey, I’m not asking anybody to refer me, so word-of-mouth marketing is not something I need to concern myself with. I mean, if I provide good products or services, and if my customer service is up to par, I’ll naturally get some customers by word of mouth. Why bother with plans and strategies? Why spend all that extra effort to get people to refer me? I’m getting word-of-mouth free, every day, and it’s not costing me any time or effort!

America is a Strategic Advantage
By PATRICIA PARHAM, Ph.D., Power Thought of the Week

Structure follows Strategy

The growth strategy that you adopt determines the form that will facilitate the alliance. For example, customer-supplier relations may lead to exclusivity agreements. Outsourcing deliveries, IT or HR, may evolve into long-term service contracts. Sharing customer bases or bundled services or products may result in profit sharing. Use your network to determine the right agreements to make your alliance strong and profitable.
