Twitter Tips to Help Your Small Business Grow | KENSEL TRACY

Kensel Tracyby Kensel Tracy

Canada, it is said, is one of the most connected countries in the world and in spite of paying some of the highest rates for internet and mobile phone, social networking is continuing to grow. If you run a business and have an online presence, chances are you have heard about the potential value that Twitter can have as a business tool.

The usefulness of Twitter and other social media for promotion, marketing, interacting with customers and building relationships has been promoted by a number of social media pundits and business professionals in a wide variety of industries. However, social media has proven to be much more difficult for small business people to get a hold of and building an active presence on Twitter can me more difficult than expected. With and estimated 200 million tweets a day being sent simply sending off tweets won’t prove very useful nor will starting a twitter account and letting it lay dormant.

So in order to take advantage of what Twitter has to offer it requires having a strategy.

Here are some quick tips on how to start, build and maintain and active and effective Twitter persona for your business.

First step is to understand why you want to start a Twitter account for your business. It is important to have specific goals in mind when creating any channel and ensure the goals are reflected as you setup your profile for you and your business. It’s also important to understand how you will achieve these goals. For example, if you are trying to find new customers, make sure what you will say and to whom will attract people to find you on Twitter, subscribe to your messages and eventually visit your store, website or blog.

Twitter takes some understanding to use it effectively. It’s important to understand that Twitter is pull technology and not a push approach to promoting. Traditionally you needed to force people to read your messages by buying some form of media or sending bulk emails to prospects. On Twitter, people need to follow you or opt in to read your messages therefore you need to make sure you saying something that is relevant or interesting to people vs. trying to achieve your goals.

Nobody is going to read a feed full of advertising. This media is called social media for reason as it puts the audience as part of the conversation. Most good case studies show that the most effective use of social media are those in which creative topics are created that are of interest to your potential audience. It’s therefore important to create creative ways to respond, reach out and respond to other individual messages too.

First of all, remember that Social Media can be used for more than just marketing. The key to any marketing program is understanding your customer, their likes, dislikes and interests. Once you have this profile, ensure that your Twitter messages are following these interests (for example, if you own a unique restaurant, tweet about food, preparation, recipes and equipment). Again, Twitter is an opt-in channel, so make sure what you say is something that your customer would want to read out of interest. Be as conversational as you can. In the restaurant example above, ask people what types of food they like and how they cook. Watch for the tweets of people you follow, and when they tweet about food, don't hesitate to reach out and share your thoughts in a friendly way.

Also, understand that tools are rarely effective in isolation. Mention Twitter in conversations, and link to it from your website. Perhaps even mention it in your other marketing materials.

Twitter can be a very effective marketing tool but needs to be used correctly. The key is get the conversation going, build credibility with your business approach or business focus, give information to your audience they want to read and be a source of inspiration and knowledge which will give you an advantage and help you build followers. Also look for key influencers in your industry and follow them on Twitter.

Their following may also be your customer then you have a good chance of participating in a conversation with a variety of people that may also be interested in what it is you are saying. Remember, quality information, valuable knowledge, unique and key learning will help you grow your Twitter reputation and help others seek you out and develop a better understanding of what it is you do and what it is you have to offer.

Fight or Flight? | A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER

Fight or Flight?

by Adam J. Kovitz

Scanning the headlines of the news lately makes me wonder how much closer the U.S. worker is to the breaking point - the point where people either just "go postal" and begin rioting on the streets, lashing out in defiance against the establishment or end up curled into the fetal position.

Sure...we've been seeing this fight response play out in such exotic places as the Middle East; in Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Yemen, Qatar, etc., but now the Age of Unrest is virally making its way Westward.

In Greece, citizens are rioting in the streets and speaking out against another wave of harsh austerity measures are being threatened in order restructure debt, reverse low credit ratings, avoid being kicked out of the European Union and revitalize the economy.  One rioter was quoted as saying:

"I'm not an anarchist. I'm not a fascist. I'm not a punk," he says, wiping his face [from tear gas being used on him after throwing rocks at police officers]. "I'm a Greek. Just a regular person trying to have a regular life. I'm willing to make sacrifices for my country, but not if it leaves me for dead."
Out in cyberspace, one time rival hacktivists, LulzSec and Anonymous are uniting for "Operation Anti-Security" to expose and foil any governments and/or big business that tries to hide dirty mis-dealings.  These are the same organizations that have allegedly been involved in attacks on the U.S. Senate and Sony's PlayStation networks.  According to a recent news release the top priority of the "operation" is to:

"Steal and leak any classified government information, including email spools and documentation. Prime targets are banks and other high-ranking establishments. If they try to censor our progress, we will obliterate the censor with cannonfire anointed with lizard blood."
In the U.S., although there are other top news stories in the mainstream media, protests still continue in Wisconsin against the Governor and his administration.  Also a recent survey done by placement company Mercer, shows that despite high unemployment, half of U.S.'s workers are disgruntled with their jobs.

So how long can the "lame horse" that is the working class of the world continue to be ridden?

Not much longer.

Given this data, here are my conclusions as to what we can do (feel free to agree or disagree, and please note that I am not advocating any political agenda other than to solve the greater problem at large, while avoiding as much bloodshed and violence as possible):
1.)  Only entrepreneurship and investment in entrepreneurship can make things better in terms of innovation, employment and making the economy better.
2.)  If you have one or more employees, assume that at least half of them want to leave right now.  Ask yourself how that would affect your business operations if they do and what can you do right now to improve the working environment.
3.)  If you run a small business, entrepreneurial concern or emerging enterprise, look to internationalize your operations in order to hedge your bets on the larger global economy.
4.)  If you are an investor or big business who is sitting on cash, realize that you are part of the problem.  Designate a portion of your funds for riskier investments in smaller companies and entrepreneurial concerns.
5.)  If you're governmental official capable of affecting policy.  Work to break up larger monopolistic companies that would put a stranglehold on the people you supposedly serve.  Corporations might be deemed as people but they're amoral people who are answerable to others who are only interested in profits.
6.)  Understand that most of us are still in denial (it ain't just a river in Egypt) about the stress cracks that are forming.  Bad morale, fatigue, increasingly outspoken employees and failure to pass measures through to enhance the positions of the people only continue to exacerbate the situation.  Can we afford to be distracted by pictures of inappropriate body parts by our politicians or should we be paying attention to the bigger issues?  Realize that the longer we go without solving the real problems, the more chances we have of violent revolution.  We are on an unsustainable path that must be changed and now.
7.)  Understand that while drastic measures must be taken, they cannot be forced upon those who have no recognizable power or worth.  Radical change doesn't mean further penalizing them by charging more money for money they don't have or taking away their rights.  Entire systems must be changed to benefit not just the privileged few, but the greater whole.  It is not a time to be selfish.
8.)  Recognize that there is vast opportunity for growth and innovation in such a proposed climate of true change, in such ways that can be profitable to those of the entrepreneurial spirit.

All my best,

Adam

Entrepreneurial Success Requires Finding And Recruiting Talent -

Entrepreneurial Success - Recruiting Talented Partners And Thought-Leaders.

"As entrepreneurs and leaders we need to magnetize (i.e., to become talent magnets) and not to minimize (i.e., to become so filled with insecurity and conceit that we crowd other talented prospective partners out by the magnitude of our own egos)." - Douglas E. Castle

Entrepreneurs are not necessarily technologists, applications developers, geeks, nerds, or wild-eyed visionaries busily thing of ways to attract a venture capitalist's or accredited angel investor's funds for "experimentation."

While entrepreneurs are many types of persons with a diversity of talents and abilities, the successful ones are business engineers -- they are masterful at identifying and recruiting greater minds and greater management into their young companies in order to accelerate progress and ensure sustainable growth.

The most successful entrepreneurs are talent scouts, seeking those other special individuals who have expertise or experience in those areas where they realistically acknowledge that they, themselves, might be deficient. This requires several abilities on the part of the entrepreneur at the center of any start-up or high-growth potential enterprise. To expedite and secure success, every entrepreneur must be able to:

1) Search for and recruit talent;

2) Be persuasive and generous in offering those skilled individuals (the ones he or she has scouted) a great deal in return for their sweat equity and for their portion of the assumed risk in working for an unproven organization;

3) Put personal insecurities and ego considerations aside in the interest of project development, implementation and management - it is often very difficult for an entrepreneur to hand over the reins to others, but the rewards are greatest where he or she surrounds himself or herself with high-quality, well-motivated people;

4) Create positions and job descriptions around those areas where these talented individuals have an intersection of their greatest contribution value and their true passions - don't try to partner with a brilliant mind, only to stifle it, underutilize it or misplace it. As an entrepreneur, your people are truly Human Assets. Allow these sentient, innovative assets to help you to find their best place within your organization's management structure and critical path to success;

5) Constantly weed out the feeble asset choices from the powerful ones -- work to diversify your company's collective skill set and to maximize intellectual and emotional synergy. Try to acquire the partnership of those persons from whom you can learn and grow - do waste time finding people to simple "fill pre-carved slots" or to boss around. The wrong people in the wrong positions quickly turn into dangerous liabilities.

The most important thing to remember is that your partners are your entrepreneurial investment portfolio. Trade out of "bad positions" and trade into "good positions." Don't be afraid of strengthening your average per capita corporate IQ. Push the envelope. Good recruits will help you in your conquest of profitability and prosperity.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Rewards for Failure? | A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER

Rewards for Failure?

by Adam J. Kovitz

Rewards for failure is something that no rationally-minded entrepreneurial CEO or small business owner would stand for in any of their employees.  Rationally-minded investors or board members of such organizations wouldn't stand for rewarding their CEOs either.  When bad behavior happens, most rationally-minded individuals take appropriate action.

So why is it then that Transocean Ltd's (one of the companies behind last year's Gulf of Mexico oil spill, along with BP, Halliburton and Cameron International Corporation) Board of Directors is rewarding their executives with bonuses, pay raises and stock options?

The answer is one of the following:
a.)  Transocean's Board of Directors are not in their right minds, are incapable of making rational decisions and therefore, should be let go
b.)  Transocean's Board of Directors are devoid of conscience, care little for the lives suffered at the hands of their company and therefore, should be let go, or
c.)  From a recent SEC filing:  "Notwithstanding the tragic loss of life in the Gulf of Mexico, we achieved an exemplary statistical safety record as measured by our total recordable incident rate and total potential severity rate.  As measured by these standards, we recorded the best year in safety performance in our company's history, which is a reflection on our commitment to achieving an incident-free environment, all the time, everywhere."

This was a trick question:  the answer was d.) all of the above.

Instead of firing Transamerica CEO, Steven L. Newman and his executive cronies by patting themselves on the back that they didn't kill any more than they already have, and they are receiving the following:
1.)   an average 3.8 percent pay raise (not Mr. Newman, but the rest of the execs)
2.)  performance bonuses of 44.8 percent, and
3.)  $1.2 million to $5.4 million in stock options.

WHY DO WE CONTINUE DOING BUSINESS WITH COMPANIES LIKE THESE?

Would You Bank with Chase?

Let's stop rewarding bad behavior.  Smaller companies can't afford to be so brazen...why should big business be any different?  Let's hold big business accountable to the same standards as the rest of us.  Furthermore, I propose the following:
1.)  Urge your local government representatives to promote legislation that supports executive salary caps - there is such a thing (I know it's sacrilegious for an entrepreneur to say) as too much.  If they don't, vote them out.
2.)  Limit your exposure to dealing with such companies that engage in questionable practices, and work collaboratively with fellow entrepreneurs and small businesses wherever possible.
3.)  Lend a sympathetic ear (as time permits) to your fellow entrepreneurs and business owners.  Extend them credit and price-breaks wherever possible, and
4.)  Be an example of ethical and sustainable business practices.

If more entrepreneurs and small businesses implement any or all of the previously-stated suggestions, we can still spur on a new economic revolution that will be beneficial to all in the long term.  If we don't, our future may continue to look like this...

Q:  Steven L. Newman, CEO of Transamerica Ltd...your company was one of four responsible for killing eleven (nine of them, your own employees), wounding seventeen others, releasing over 205 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, causing a federal fisheries disaster in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana costing more than $2.5 billion in damages, killing countless wildlife and putting tens of thousands of small business owners out of business...what are you going to going to do now?

A:  I'm going to Disneyworld!

All my best,

Adam
