THE SLOGANATOR: A Little Appreciation Goes a Long Way

Rhonda L.Sher
As a professional author and speaker, I meet hundreds of people on a regular basis. Those who stand out from the crowd are those who show their appreciation for what they have learned from me in some small way. Sometimes it is a handwritten note, other times it is a small gift , a card or phone call. When I receive something from someone who shows appreciation, my entire day changes.

When I was thinking about the concept of appreciation marketing, I decided to contact some of my fellow two minute networkers and ask them what type of “appreciation marketing gifts” they had received or given and share them in this week’s column. Here are some of the stories I was told.

One fellow networker shared the story of how he liked to light candles in his home and how he got a blister on his finger from the bic lighter that he used to light the candles. The friend who saw the blister remembered how painful it was and the next time she saw him, she gave him one of those lighters that are used for the bar-b-que that she picked up at a dollar store. She said his response was that the lighter was one of the most thoughtful gifts he had received in a long time. She makes it a practice to do random acts of kindness at least once a day. This is just one example of why it is not what people say or what people do that we remember, it is how they make us feel. I am certain that the recipient of that lighter “lit up” and felt special because someone remembered that this was important to him.

Another networking friend who is a realtor told me about she was challenged to find a way to make people remember her in the area where she farmed for real estate prospects. She told me that she lived in that very same complex that she farmed in. I suggested that she buy a large box of flat packages of popcorn and hand deliver these to her neighbors with a note attached saying she was just popping by to introduce herself and let her neighbors know that she was living in the complex and was there if they wanted any information about comparable sales or resources such as babysitters or referrals to qualified professionals in the area. My friend was filled with appreciation for the idea of the popcorn and actually ended up getting a listing just for getting out there and delivering it. I can tell you that she felt appreciated but so did I just knowing that I helped her.

Appreciation marketing has even been written about in a great book by Tommy Wyatt & Curtis Lewsey, which is called Appreciation Marketing. I had the good fortune to meet them at a send out cards convention and learned a lot about this concept from them. I have since incorporated appreciation marketing into my send out cards business and the results have been nothing short of amazing.

In the book Appreciation Marketing, the authors define an appreciator as someone who:

  • Expresses gratitude
  • Is a magnetic person
  • Gives off positive energy
  • Controls his enthusiasm
  • Lifts other people up
  • Doesn't complain
  • Is humble
  • Is genuine and patient
  • Is clean
  • Is sincere
  • Builds strong relationships
  • Is a giver
  • Is a connector
  • Goes the extra mile
  • Recognizes his assets
  • Is thoughtful
  • Sees good where others cannot
  • Loves life, and Practices proper habits.
Who are the people in your network that have these characteristics? Those are the people that usually have the greatest success in business and the largest circle of friends. It is no surprise that a little appreciation goes a long way.

If you want to take your networking and marketing to the next level, try practicing appreciation marketing. In fact as my gift to you, if you want to send two free cards to someone you know to express your appreciation, go to www.sendoutcards.com/7207 and send two cards as my gift to you. Make someone’s day by sending a heartfelt card and see how it changes your day.

One final story on how appreciation marketing can really make a difference in your business. One of my clients was looking for a way to create a memorable tagline for his business that people would remember. As we sat over lunch, he told me that he was in the window dressing business and that he met new people regularly to talk about how to turn their naked windows into something people would enjoy in their homes. I told him that he just had to tell people he was the best “blind date” that they would have ever and that he did windows. That slogan opened the door to more windows and business than he could have ever imagined and he showed his appreciation by recommending me to many people to write their taglines and elevator pitches. I truly felt appreciated for helping someone grow their business and it has come back and helped me tenfold.

If you have experienced appreciation marketing, I would love to hear about your success stories. Feel free to drop me an email and let me know your stories. I would be glad to share them in my monthly newsletter. Appreciation is one of the best feelings in the world. To all my readers, I truly appreciate you.

KALÖN WOMEN: Smart Women Use Speaking to Grow Their Business

Guest Columnist: Joy Chudacoff

A few weeks ago, I took some time to evaluate where most of my clients come from and the two areas where I consistently receive highly qualified clients are referrals from happy clients and public speaking. It’s essential that you spend your valuable time doing the things that consistently bring you the clients that you love to work with. This week, I’m going to focus on public speaking as I get many questions from Smart Women on this topic.

Speaking to your target market is a wonderful way to reach more people in a short period of time and get your message out about how your product or service can help them. It works well because your target audience can get to know you on a more personal level and get a feel for your style and personality.

You may be reading this and thinking, “I’ve never done any public speaking and I’m not feeling very confident about it.” I understand completely. I started speaking 15 years ago because I had a mentor at the time who insisted this was a great way for me to grow my business. It was not by choice and I tried (unsuccessfully) numerous times to avoid the process. I remember my first speaking engagement. I had purchased a $300 silk suit to wear for the occasion. I was so nervous that I was sweating the entire time. By the end of the presentation, I was soaked! The suit was ruined. I sent it to the dry cleaners but it could not be saved. After that first presentation, little by little, I became a better speaker and more confident in my ability.

If you’ve been thinking that speaking is a tool that could help you grow your business and get your message out, you should take the leap and go for it. Here are some tips and solutions that will help make the process a lot easier:

1. Choose a Topic – Pick a topic where you have expert knowledge. Think about a problem or challenge that you solve for your clients. Create a presentation around this and include 3-5 main points that will be benefit your audience.

2. Use the KISS Principle – Divide your talk into 3 main areas. The beginning is your introduction where you create a desire for the audience to listen to you by sharing your level of expertise. Don’t forget to share your vulnerability as well. People love hearing that you’re not perfect and you’ve made mistakes too! The middle is the 3-5 main points you want to share on your topic. The ending is where you let them know how they can get more information and how they can work with you.

3. Offer a Free Gift – Ask everyone to fill out a form with their name and email address. Put the forms into a basket and have the host pull out some lucky winners for a free gift. For example, it could be a free session with you, a free book or e-book. People love free gifts! Let the audience know that they will hear from you in the future about special offers or new products and services. This is an excellent list building tool. (I see many speakers forgetting this step and it’s one of the most important!)

4. Give Them Something to Buy – If you have a table at the event (many events offer a table to speakers at little or no extra charge) have your products and brochures, with descriptions about your service, available. After you finish speaking, get back to your table as quickly as possible so that people who are interested in asking questions or interacting with you can approach you easily.

5. Follow-Up After the Event – After the event is over, make sure you follow-up with the event host and find out how they felt about your presentation. This is an excellent way to learn what went well and if there are some areas for improvement. Be sure to ask the host for a testimonial about your speaking. This is an invaluable tool to have on your web site media page and marketing materials.

You can start with a small group (5-10 people) and move on to larger audiences along the way. Over the last 15 years, I’ve spoken to groups of people that had an audience of 5 people as well as groups of up to 750 people. The number isn’t what’s important. The key is to inspire a few people who identify with you and want to work with you to help solve their problem or challenge. Speaking has made a tremendous difference in my business. It can make a difference in your business too.

Anything is possible. Everything is waiting for you.

POWER THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: B2B Power Networking, Part 4

Power Thought of the Week with Patricia Parham, Ph.D.

B2B Powerful Alliances

As your business and another contemplate working together, formalize the relationship. Clarify what your business will give and receive in what time-frames, with dollar amounts to ensure that each company is receiving equivalent value in the exchange. Due diligence requires that both businesses and individuals be checked out for fiscal responsibility and quality of work before entering into an alliance. Short-term arrangements and small contracts make for good trial runs. Include cancellation clauses. Handshakes are necessary, but insufficient to confirm agreements. Signed and dated written contracts are key to successful B2B alliances!
