THE BOOM IN BOOMER NETWORKING: A Day In the Life Of A Networker

The Boom in Boomer Networking with Elaine Ingis

Today is the day that I’m going to make “that” connection – to develop that mutually beneficial relationship - to drive my business and thoughts to that place of continued success. Today Is The Day I Network, yet again.

Up early, sharing a cup of coffee with my computer and phone which always seems to get in the way regardless of which side of the computer I put them. I am fortified and now ready to talk, charm, cajole, inform, educate and/or simply act as a cheerleader for my project, soon to be their project.

If it were only that easy! As a believer of positive thoughts and an advocate of constant “on the go”, I believe that high energy is not just defined by your power bars, it is a state of mind. Every day is new – every day is filled with original possibilities. If you’ve been reading my blog, SrMeetUp!, you’d know that “possibilities” is one of my favorite words. You would also know that, although I believe is positive motion, I am a realist and know that it is not easy. How can you keep moving toward constructive objectives when your emotions are low because of various forces outside your control – I can give you a list of outside forces but let’s say the economy is 1thru 7 with family and friends taking up the rest of the top ten.

So how can you remain upbeat, confident? You simply have no choice! You are a winner and that’s what winners do. They keep moving and networking. I promise you, that positive action will ultimately bring rewards. Use common sense – stay stagnant and absolutely nothing will happen – throw enough against the wall and – well, you know Forrest Gump as well as I do.

What you may not know about me is that I am the originator of “Essie’s Pearls” – (don’t ask). When I have those days, I pull out a pearl (of wisdom) Picture this – (no, not Sicily) NYC– you are beginning an exciting project. You are filled with expectations, armed with a list of people to call, supported by friends and colleagues – Great Idea – can’t fail. You start walking through the tunnel and all is well at least for a while. The further you go into the tunnel, the darker it gets. When you are in the middle, you can’t see the light from behind or the light that, intellectually we know, is ahead. How easy it is to forget our initial excitement – how easy to get consumed by the dark. But you keep moving forward and when you see the light up ahead - FINALLY – WOW that’s the best.

I can't tell you when or how it will take, but I am confident that success will be yours as long as you keep networking and MOVING.

THE BOOM IN BOOMER NETWORKING: Tails From the Old Dawg

The Boom in Boomer Networking with Elaine Ingis

Tails
From the Old Dawg

OLD DAWG NEW TRICKS

It is possible to learn new tricks at any age. When I say new tricks...I'm not referring to "playmates", but rather reinventing yourself to enjoy the life you have been dealt.

My name is Stuart and I am an inactive member of AARP...OMG, I joined the first year and received 1000's of unsolicited mail...not quite what I had in mind. I prefer invited guests to drop ins!

Are you over 50, 60, 70…are you a BOOMER?? Tired of doing the same thing year in and year out...silly question; most people are! Going "outside the box" tends to paralyze any "sane" person and hence...you keep doing what you are doing AND getting what you are getting. It’s time to go “insane”. SrmeetUp! is just one excellent way to “rev” up your life.

REJOICE IN YOUR INDIVIDUALISM

I have been climbing up the corporate ladder for over 20 years and enjoyed every minute of it...NOT!!! For the 20 years proceeding that, I was an actor...ran nightclubs...was a boxer...a cook...and all around nice guy...and enjoyed every minute of it...YES!!!!

Supporting and raising a family required compromise and sacrifice (happy to do it)...what I didn't realize is that I also relinquished my dreams, passions and zest for life (daily grind and financial hardship can do that).

My children are older, my wife and I are wonderful friends but separated (alas...). The financial burden continues but my need for zest, passion and a darn good time has reared its glorious head. I am embarking on a new life that has been dormant in me for decades...and I am THRILLED, EXHILARATED and downright giddy with fear and hope! GAME ON!!!

Hey BOOMERS…what do you wanna do??? The world truly can be your oyster…steamed…stewed…chowdered…breaded…or just plain on the half shell. It isn’t always the results but the act of attempting something that will give you a rush…remember it can be the chase…and not the capture (careful what you wish for…).

DO SOMETHING….take a course…ask out an old flame…sky dive…watch a porn film (be IN a porn film…lol). The very act of trying something no matter how small can lead to bigger steps and open windows or doors you thought were nailed shut.

Only you can look inside your own mind and contemplate what is possible…what have you given up…what have you sacrificed for the “good of someone else”…WELL…WHAT ABOUT YOU!!!…and frankly…NOTHING is impossible…you simply have to try!

You are as worthy as anyone else…with your own time frame. Age has no place in your dreams…age is a number designated by society to indicate what you are capable of and when...If you can dream it…you can do it!

Start right now...

I am not saying to shirk your responsibilities…I would NEVER let my family suffer because of my immediate needs…BUT…I count and I have a right to be happy right along with them. Happiness expands to fit all worlds.

Old dawgs CAN learn new tricks!!! ;-) This dawg is going to be an actor!!!

Stuart

In terms of reinventing myself, that is exactly what I am doing! I have run restaurants and nightclubs while pursuing an acting career in a past lifetime (20-25 years ago). I boxed out of Gleason's Gym during that same lifetime. I have been a short order cook (and chief bottle washer ;-)) along with other "interesting" vocations.

I reinvented myself 20 years ago when my daughter (and subsequently my son) was born. I left that sordid and "exciting" life behind to move up the corporate ladder in the personnel industry (NOT sordid and NOT exciting). I am currently a Sr. VP of Sales but am more then ready to "reinvent" again!!!

####

Stuart, I love your positive approach to everything, and I do mean everything. Your enthusiasm is contagious. No doubt SrmeetUp! will be hearing a lot about you and your new successes.

THE BOOM IN BOOMER NETWORKING: Being Approachable

The Boom in Boomer Networking with Elaine

Engaging goes hand- in- hand with being Approachable.

As a Baby Boomer jumping into the networking “lifestyle” with both feet planted firmly in mid-air, I am amazed that there is so much to learn, and so little time in which to learn it!

I have learned so much about networking in these few short months since the birth of my Boomer Community, SrMeetUp! that I am virtually bursting with information to share. But since I tend to gather my words faster than my mouth works, I will type very sloooooowly –I promise.

I’ve engaged well before “engaging” became trendy. To engage was like putting on a new black dress – it was basic – every one of my species should have one (and I’ll use any occasion to buy one – retail therapy – I’m a fan). Men – figure out what makes you happy (keep it cleanJ). Some of the best people I’ve met have been through random encounters enjoyed way before SrMeetUp! became a reality. I have no idea why, but I banked these new acquaintances and now I am withdrawing from that bank with an amazingly high growth of principal. (I know, I know, another platitude - but tell me, can’t you visualize exactly what I mean!).

I always realized how overburdened and over extended most people felt – me too. So I never asked for anything except to talk and mostly to listen – me listening to them. Listening is the best part of networking – gathering information you can incorporate into your projects and sharing with others. Realizing how many interests you have in common and people you both know is the next best thing. When you meet new people, for a while at least, you have this great feeling of anonymity – you can be whomever you want – that is at least until you share contact information.

Engaging is just one part of the equation – You have to be approachable as well. That little proverbial “chip on your shoulder” can be more like a boulder if you are not approachable. Being approachable is what happens when you know from what you speak, you are confident in whom you are and what you want to convey – simply said, you are comfortable in your own skin, knowledgeable about what you know and genuinely interested to learn what you do not know.

So networkers of America, and the rest of this great world – get out there, engage and smile – You are making bank deposits! It is only a matter of time before your deposits will begin to pay handsome dividends.

THE BOOM IN BOOMER NETWORKING: Life is Complicated

The Boom in Boomer Networking with Elaine Ingis

Life is complicated – WOW, what an understatement. Trying to find your way out of one complication usually leads you into another, at least that’s been my “M.O.”. But, undaunted, I keep trudging along. Subconsciously I must be a believer in the philosophy that it is always “harder to hit a moving target.” I keep moving.

I believe that everything I do I do well – some are just “weller” than others. On a “well” day I reach my goal 1-2-3. On a less “well” day it may take me 15-16-17, etc. The important thing is that I always manage to get to where I need to be. Although it’s been argued that I am a bit of a Pollyanna, I never thought I was anything but brilliant in my tenacity and drive.

W R O N G.

I took pride in figuring out everything on my own. Learning from my mistakes, many repeated under a different guise. My energy was high, my attitude was positive, my creativity was always questioning – I Was Exhausted! Why did I need to go it alone when I could have learned from others' experiences, tapped into others' resources, get input from others who may have been there, and had truly done that?

– Why didn’t I streamline and accelerate the process by simply networking, and leveraging the experience and knowledge of other human beings.

As you may know, I am the Founder of SrMeetUp! (our website address is http://www.SrMeetUp.com), an interactive social and business community for Baby Boomers Sixty Years Plus. I’ve had a commitment and passion toward this amazing populace long before it became obvious, that we, the Woodstock Generation, needed to re-direct and reunite – to come home – to be heard. New and improved! … yada, yada is great -- but there is nothing like the bonding of similar life experiences to build a neighborhood of recognizable icons and memories. I’ve come to realize that I didn’t have to reinvent the wheel to build a new vehicle (perhaps I should sell my formula to Chrysler and GM). I simply had to network.

I still have loads of energy, still a glass half full kinda gal, never at a loss for questions, but I have accomplished so much more by simply tapping into information and experiences from my new colleagues and, hopefully, new friends.

So, friends, I need a favor. Still getting my site up and running – should be launched by July - and would love your opinions and comments on what we’ve accomplished and perhaps where you’d like to see us go. Visit us at http://SrMeetUp.blogspot.com/ those of you who are certifiably Boomers or younger (we all have Boomers in our lives), and tell us what would you truly like to see. Your input is precious. Whether it is about design, concepts, features or anything else, we’d like to know about it. I am sure, in the future, that I will be able to reciprocate either through my website or as a network buddy – as a matter of fact, I look forward to that.

TNNW BULLETIN AND ARTICLES, APRIL, 2009, WEEK 4

Major Developments, Forward Motion, Events and Actionable Items: TNNW - We ARE Networking

April 27, 2009

Bulletin # 13

"PUTTING THE 'BULL' BACK INTO BULLETIN"

---

SITES TO SEE -- NOW

There are several super sites (in the vast web of THE NATIONAL NETWORKER) which you should definitely look at and favoritize. We'll admit...we are still under construction, and are making constant improvements to the navigation "friendliness" of all of our sites -- and yes, we have a truckload of them -- more than 20 of 'em and growing. The trick is going to be centralizing the navigation right on the website. This should be in place very soon -- we are internally beta testing right now. We're just like Microsoft, except we do our beta-testing prior to releasing our product to the public.

For a complete sitemap and index of all of our sites, simply click on http://tnnwindex.blogspot.com/, and FAVORITIZE. {yes, yes...it sounds like a window cleaner} Keep this handy - when you're on any page, look for the INDEX TO TNNW SITES button to return to the Index at any time. Here are a few sites to visit right now (Put down that X-Box and get back to Networking!); they are just a sampling:

MEET OUR ADVERTISERS AND AFFILIATES

We have some fabulous services, affiliate programs and business development tools on this page. Take a look at what our advertisers and affiliates are offering (often at a significant discount to our Subscribers and Members) and click away. We do not give any space to any product or program which we have not examined for quality. Do some serious shopping. If you are interested in beling listed here, just navigate you way to our ADVERTISING AND AFFILIATE SERVICES Site. Hint: You'll have to use the index to find it.

Please pay special attention to my new ad (which is particularly direct and offensive) for DOUGLAS CASTLE - STRATEGIC PLANNING on this page. If you want to comment about it, criticize it, or just take advantage of the opportunity to abuse me, please either post your comments right to the bottom of this bulletin, to my current article, or to my email address which is douglas.castle@yahoo.com . Please avoid profanity. For the really mean ones, you may email them to my alternate email address, which is Whodoyouthinkyouaredouglas.castle@yahoo.com .

Expect CHAPTER TRACKER (Jay Rowland's ingenious organizational tracking product) and WILL BANTER (J.D. Gershbein's cartoon creation, and a possible candidate for TNNW's Board Of Directions) to be making appearances on this page very shortly. Years after Homer Simpson is gone and forgotten, the frenetic, caffeinated WILL BANTER will be a legend and role model to every networker on this planet. Oh brother.

SPECIAL TNNW PACKAGES FOR PRESS RELEASES, PUBLICITY AND PR

You cannot afford NOT to use the indisputable power of the press release (just ask ANY of our TNNW clients, or Featured Author and expert Rita Wilhelm). The cost is miniscule in proportion to the potential audience. It adds to your credibility, SEO, branding, potential client population and makes you instantly more visible and more popular. TNNW offers multiple press release packages at the best prices in the industry - plus, we will help in every aspect of drafting, editing, tracking and following up with your releases. A PROFESSIONALLY WRITTEN and PROPERLY DISTRIBUTED PRESS RELEASE IS THE WORLD'S MOST POTENT MARKETING TOOL. Bottom line: Do ALL of your press releases, and set up your press release campaigns through TNNW. Let us help you exponentialize and monetize your profession, business, brand, product or service.

TNNW BUZZWORKS

We have just released the TNNW BUZZWORKS page. Look at it very, very carefully. Here's the idea: If you write or reference THE NATIONAL NETWORKER in any article, blog or social media (Digg, Twitter, Facebook...), point it out to us, and we will give you (and/or your organization, service or product) a BIGGER BUZZ IN RETURN! Keep buzzing us, and we'll buzz you as you have never been buzzed before -- to hundreds of thousands of readers. Get buzzin', cousin.

TNNW SERVICES FOR MEMBERS

Explore (bring a lunch, binoculars and a pith helmet) our services. You will not find better services, at better value anywhere. You might want to become a Member...

CHRISTINE, ELAINE and ANN

We have three fabulously gifted Featured Authors, and we would insist (gently, of course) that you visit their blogs. These blogs are not only fascinating, but they were evidently prepared by a brilliant blogmaster -- some uncelebrated (and probably undercompensated - sigh -) Shakespeare of Javascript.

Christine Sotmary's blog about her widely-acclaimed book can be found at http://christinesotmary.blogspot.com/ .

Elaine Ingis, the Founder of SrMeetUp! has a blog for her BabyBoomer membership community at http://srmeetup.blogspot.com/. Her website can be found at http://www.srmeetup.com/. You might want to become one of her advertisers, writers, or Members. She is a dynamo.

Ann Barczay Sloan's blog can be found at http://annbarczaysloan.blogspot.com/ . She engaged TNNW to assist her in getting some artists and photographers to contribute (for some publicity and potential royalties) for her forthcoming book. Within two four days, we have received more than 100 email submissions. Investor interest is growing as well. We will be off to the publishers soon!

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS

TNNW expects to announce the filling of several newly-created positions within these next four weeks [cue drumroll]:

Newsletter Editor; Calendar Coordinator; Webmaster, and Director Of Membership Services.

REMINDER
