One Successful Butler

By Peter Biadasz
Southern Plains Bureau Chief
(Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico)

The greatest benefit of this job is interviewing the “movers and shakers” within the networking industry. I am honored to introduce someone to you whom I have had not only the honor of watching since 2001 grow into a master networker, but also have enjoyed observing him teach networking to others, who have carried on the tradition by also teaching others the art/science of networkering. And by teaching I do not just mean talking the talk, but also by example; walking the walk.

Let me introduce to you Michael D. Butler – networker, business owner, marathon runner and father. I guess he sleeps occasionally too, as time permits. You can find him in meetings of varying sizes, on YouTube; and onstage as a master presenter as well as in the audience. Michael is very active.

I recently visited with him to learn his networking and business philosophies. His analogy to business and networking is that “networking is like a big mall. Your network is under one roof; easily assessable and growing all the time. You may have to park and walk on occasion, but convenience is the key. As we need to access the businesses in the mall to meet the needs of others or our own, they are right at our fingertips”. I think we all like going to the mall. Now we know we all have our own mall.

Michael has over 1000 people under him in 5 nations within his Xango Business. As a Gold Star Networking Group Director he has about 150 networkers he is responsible for maturing into master networkers. “Gold Star has helped me to greatly sharpen my networking skills. I firmly believe that as people’s networking skills are sharpened they will make more money”.

According to Michael, key attributes of a networker include that others know, like and trust you. In addition, he finds a fulfillment in introducing others to make those vital business and personal connections. He is a team player who believes strongly in personal branding.

Michael knows that as networkers we all are evolving and spends much time as a mentor and coach to aid others in the evolution process. He recently relayed a story to me of a networker who went from having much trouble in delivering their 60 second commercial in their networking group to making a full and fulfilling 10 minute presentation to the same group. Watching others grow and mature like this gives Michael great joy.

As a result of networking Michael has been asked to be a part of an online Viral Marketing Experiment which can be seen at www.180DaysToGreatness.com. Additional information about Michael can be obtained on his blog at www.MichaelDButler.wordpress.com. His other networking related references include www.GoldStarClubs.com and www.NetworkingForGold.com. And then there is the Online Reality show at www.YouTube.com/GlimpseRealitydotcom. Enjoy and learn much from this one very successful Butler!

Networking for a Difference in Kentucky

By Matt Anderson

Great Lakes Bureau Chief
(Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky)

“People see you at your best when you’re doing things for charitable causes.”
This point, made by Thomas J Stanley in his outstanding audio program Networking with Millionaires, has been stuck in my head since I first heard it over six years ago. A marvelous example of networking this way is the Altrusa club in Lexington, KY.

Altrusa is an international organization founded in Chicago in 1917 for professional and business women. Kelli Newman, an insurance professional for Midland National, coordinates her group’s major annual event called Mighty Moms. “We bring moms in the Central Kentucky area into Lexington for a weekend of pampering. These are moms of severely handicapped or sick children who spend 24/7 taking care of their kids with no time for themselves.”

Local businesses donate various services from hotel stays to massages, haircuts, movie trips, and visiting local attractions. Organizing this is a great way for Kelli to network more with club members as well as with other local business owners in a non-sales environment where the focus is on serving these mothers and giving them a chance to bond with other moms in similar situations.

The primary mission of Altrusa is literacy and education, and the Lexington club has a monthly program called Brains and Bellies. “Once a month we meet with underprivileged children and read to them, feed them, and give them a book to take home with them. We encourage their parents to participate and to read to them as well.”

Why network this way? “The community service work is so appreciated. It feels good to help.”

Plus there are business benefits. Sure, you could try networking to meet local women business owners at a chamber of commerce or a NAWBO event, but working for a cause greater than yourself speaks volumes for your integrity. It also brings you more credibility and it helps you develop stronger relationships in a much more favorable environment where business people can get to know you first and not your product or service. Kelli clearly ‘gets’ this. Comfort is one of the main reasons why people do business with us.

In his most recent book called YES!, Arizona State professor Robert Cialdini explains that you can get ahead much faster in life NOT by asking ‘who can help me?’ but instead by asking yourself ‘whom can I help?’ This is because you are leveraging the rule of reciprocation which states that when you help people in an authentic way, others feel obligated to reciprocate.

Altrusa’s yearly event, Make a Difference Day, is coming up very soon on October 25th. The organization has 15 districts around the world and many other at-large clubs. Check out www.altrusa.org if the mission appeals to you and you like the idea of meeting some of your community’s leading professional women. ____________________________________________________________________

Online Networking Continues to Grow with the Introduction of TmyBC in Canada

By Kensel Tracy
Canadian Bureau Chief

As the world of social networking online continues to expand, a new company from Canada is planning on becoming the next “Face book for business”. TMyBC (Take My Business Card) is a social business networking site that connects businesses and customers globally through its new website www.tmybc.com. Founded in September 2007, by Mr. Kabir Datoo, from London, Ontario, TMyBC is expected to fill a void in the market by developing a new social network for business.

How does it work? By registering as a member of TMyBC, businesses can locate both businesses and customers by using the site, anywhere in the world. In order to improve your company’s marketing and networking the site allows the member to build a unique business profile. Members can promote their business by uploading images and videos of their products and services as well as company brochures helping them to build a unique marketing profile called a BCard. The format is simple enough. Once you and your company are registered, you have the option to design your own profile through a "BCard".

The TMyBC network made up of two networking options. For example, you can network around the site itself looking for potential partners by sending a BCard or just post your business card and attract business to you. By using some of the sites’ additional features, TMyBC enables everyone, everywhere to improve their marketing image and helps them to build their own unique business network.

A business can also send instant messages across the TMyBC network to connect with other businesses instantly providing a very unique marketing format. Anybody can join TMyBC as all that is needed is a valid business or occupation. At the present time, there is no charge and Mr. Datoo mentioned that he hopes to secure advertisers and sponsors to help offset the cost of running the site.

Social networking is on the rise and business sites are no different. At the end of the day, it’s all about making contacts and creating more opportunities for your business and Mr. Datoo’s site is no exception. In the modern era it is possible to get a critical mass of contacts within a very short-time and who knows this site could go on to become a major business networking site. At the present time, check it out and see it has some potential for you. The more contacts and networks you have the better chance you have of growing your business.

To contact TMyBC go to www.tmybc.com
