BNI: Three Other Reasons For Networking

Most articles and workshops focus on teaching networking principles and strategies for increasing their business. But there are times when we have other needs and networking can be a strategic strategy in your success.

In this article, I’d like to explore three other reasons to network:

1. Looking for a new job. When you submit an application for a job, you are competing among many, many, other applicants. To narrow down the number of applications, those who are reviewing them often scan through and look for reasons to decline as many as possible. A better solution is to network and make personal connections with one of the decision makers.

How? First, find out who is the decision maker. What is the person’s name? Title? Research the person online and through social media to find out more about him/her. What are the interests? Hobbies? What organizations does he/she belong to? I would also recommend following the person on Twitter. Who do you know who knows this person? Then ask if they would give a personal introduction and recommendation.

2. Finding New Employees. Using traditional methods of advertising for a new employee can be a frustrating experience. With so many people looking for work, people will desperately apply for jobs they don’t have the qualifications or experience for, just to feel that they are at least trying to get a job. Many employers have had success in finding the right employee(s) through networking.

How? First, know what skills and attributes you are looking for. What values do you want your potential employee to have? Next, think about your network of contacts. Who do you know that may know this person? Ask your contacts for names and contact info of people they are recommending. I would also ask, “Is this someone you would hire?” That tells you a lot right there! Research the person on social media to learn more about them. This may help you discover if it’s someone you are interested in interviewing!

You may also want to ask the members of any trade or industry-specific associations you belong to and network at. They may know someone who would be a great fit but they don’t have an opening within their company at this time.

3. Finding a Consultant. There are so many consultants available to choose from and each seems to have a specific niche or area of expertise. When I hired a consultant who came across as a “one size fits all”, I was deeply disappointed. Now I hire consultants for a specific result I am looking to achieve and they must be personally recommended by someone who has achieved the results I desire.

How? First, know what you are looking to achieve. For example, my goal was to develop a product based on the workshops I teach, “Social Media Marketing Success in 15 Minutes A Day.” I wanted to avoid the pain of trying to figure it out on my own, so I turned to my network of contacts.

I contacted the people who already had packaged courses available and asked lots of questions: What did they like most? What would they change? Who does their distribution? How many do they need to order at a time? What questions should I be asking that I don’t know enough to ask?

Through this method I found a great consultant who has numerous products of his own that he successfully markets, as well as working with others. It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend him to others I meet who are considering developing their own products. I know that networking for the right consultant, rather than reading through ads and marketing materials, helped me make a decision that was effective and painless.

Networking is more than just “business” – it relates to everything we do in life. Reach out to your network and you’ll find that someone will know the right person for whatever you are looking for.

BNI: Be Relevant to Stay Competitive

How I see it is that we need to be relevant in order to stay competitive in the marketplace.

When business owners and entrepreneurs are asked, “What do you want to be in your business?”, answers range from being liked, being loved, being important, being the best, being reliable, being ethical, being honest, the list is long. Being rich is often mentioned but is surprisingly down on the list.

What we really need to do to achieve our goals is be relevant; closely connected, and appropriate to the matter at hand. Focus on what matters most. Don’t try to be all things to all people.

Are you relevant? Is your business the right kind of business for the time, for the marketplace? Is your product or service of value to the rest of us. Can we identify with what you’re saying..with what you’re selling.

Being relevant is not about having the latest and greatest. Relevancy is what we are now, as a large collective (a cooperative enterprise.) such as a society and a small collective such as our circle of personal and business contacts. Offering the latest and greatest option may not be the right choice, when the group you are trying to reach and relate to is looking for a product or idea that is tried and and true, full of old fashioned value.

This is how we develop strong business relationships; relationships based on based on relevant feelings, real time opinions, and solid business practices. Ask yourself “Am I making sense, Am I giving and receiving benefit from what I’m saying and practicing?

By being mutually relevant, we can extend our trust to a higher level and a bigger collective, and fear less about unexpected changes in relationships and subsequently in our business dealings.

Geography plays a role in relevancy. What is of importance to one part of a nation may not be pertinent nor important to another part of the same country, much less from one country to the next. Relevance is considered based on needs, wants and desires of the populace at hand.

Do you want your business to prosper, and to stay prosperous during an up economy or a down economy?

Be real, be relevant, pay attention!

BNI: Referrals - Are You Getting Them? Why Not? One Woman's Story

Law of Attraction, Ask & You Shall Receive, Givers Gain.

We have all heard these philosophies in one form or another at sometime in our personal or business life. Each one asks for us to reach out to others, enrolling them in our dreams, and helping them realize their dreams and visions with exceptional results. These are the words that speak of our intentions and actions. I have made a promise to help others realize their dreams.

This article is written with the hope that it may help just one other person who felt as I did.

Do you think you are too old to start or continue your business? Are you emotionally tired? Are you having challenges getting the referrals you believe you should be getting? Are you going to the mixers, networking events and referral based meetings? Still not getting referrals? But you are Very Good at what you do and you Enlighten others to what you do. I’ve been there! So what was wrong??

The universe speaks to us in many languages, but it speaks with only one voice. This voice speaks the language of Hope. Hope is what I was missing, but I didn’t know it yet.

I had an epiphany this past year. A mind shift that was brought about through my involvement with Northern Nevada BNI Assistant Directorship, the courses I took and people I met at the Referral Institute of Northern Nevada. As a result of the strength and compassion provided during the training I received, these two organizations helped me realize I had stopped living.

How is that possible and why would it happen. How would this affect my business and my possibility of referrals? It took excellent A/D training from Willie Kerschner and the AHA moments in the Certified Networker Class with Glenna Smith to realize how.

Everyone in my family- parents, siblings, cousins, etc. had all passed away early in life. Given that I have been in a great deal of pain for the last 28 years, and from family experience, I had already passed the point of no return. I was living the last 8 years of my life with the intent that I would probably be dead before year-end. I was already on borrowed time. Not a good way to live- but I was working and plugging away.

No matter how good you are at what you do- if you want someone to refer you to another person or business, they have to like and trust you first. In order to like and trust you they must be able to understand who you are. Here it comes!!!!! The Big AHA!

I was not succeeding because people didn’t really know me. I didn’t want to let people get too close, if they knew the true me they would be hurt when I died.

Whoa!!!!!!! What a Revelation.

BNI and The Referral Institute are two organizations, due to their training and people, are the voices of my universe. The voice that says – no matter the pain, or the fear, we are working together in a common cause. We are committed to help each other succeed, to light the way to a better future.

What is stopping you from succeeding? It may not be a reason like mine. There is certainly something. I highly recommend becoming involved in a BNI Leadership position and taking the Certified Networker Course at the Referral Institute. They will help you find your reason.
