BNI: Personal Copywriting in the Digital Age

How to ‘sell’ yourself to potential customers without sounding like a commercial.

For the purposes of this article, Copywriting is the advertising message that is delivered not the method of delivery. Referral relationships or close marketing opportunities involve a certain amount of selling ourselves without being crass or off-putting. We essentially write our own ad copy.

We inevitably incorporate ad speak from commercial copywriters into our language and expressions from our exposure to main stream advertising. Print, radio, TV, newspapers, internet, billboards. It’s everywhere. The average American is exposed to 1,000 to 3,000 separate advertising messages each day.

The changing methods of delivery in advertising is changing copywriting or ad speak as it were, and therefore our collective language of how we sell ourselves and relate to others is changing. Referral marketers must always strive to speak clearly, succinctly and sincerely or become less referable and just simple salesmen selling a simple product.

A Brief History of Copywriting in America

Up until the 50’s you had expansive copy extolling attributes of people, products and services. You had Norma Rockwell artwork, hand drawn cartoons and full blown fine art pictures along with the accompanying copy that was literally, according to early copywriter Albert Laker, “salesmanship in print.”

In the 50’s or as I like to say the black and white era, television was just developing and newspapers were not doing much in the way of full color advertising. Magazines were king, like Life and Look. That's when copywriting began developing the power of the idea and planting said ideas in our minds.

The 60’s were a time that saw the rise of powerful Madison Avenue ad execs such like those depicted in AMC”s “Mad Men”. Advertising began to move merchandise with a thought or an idea that compelled. Everybody had to have a TV, and with more and more time being spent in cars, radio became a powerful medium to hoist those ideas up into our consciousness. Expand our mind, expose us to different, and tell us we need that product, with slick ad campaigns combining modernism and nostalgia. Color TV, FM radio came on the horizon as advertising vehicles.

As the 70’s ended and throughout the 80’s the copywriter’s mantra was positioning Marketing strategy that aims to make a brand occupy a distinct ‘position’ relative to competing brands, in the mind of the customer. It was all about being in “the right place at the right time”, and “where would you rather be, than right here, right now.”

The 90’s was an era of allegiance, where you could sell a pair of tennis shoes, more superior than another for 10 times more, because the one brand carries the promise of allegiance to a popular sports star, or the clothes you ‘must’ wear, and the foods you ‘must’ eat, and the car you ‘must’ drive all center around an alliance between you and a celebrity.

Advertising delivery methods are changing rapidly. Broadcast is now broadband; Television is watched on line when you want, where you want. Radio is commercial free. Smart phones are becoming a primary source of reach and frequency.

So, how do we write our own ad copy?

So how does copywriting apply to referral marketing and how we communicate with others? The next big trend in advertising copywriting is honesty and sincerity, as Madison Avenue borrows a page from entrepreneurs. It’s now about knowledge, information and personal relationships.

So as entrepreneurs, learn as much as you can, and keep your ad speak exposure to a minimum, talk less and say more. In a true referral relationship it’s all about, “How Can I Help You?”

BNI: Be Relevant to Stay Competitive

How I see it is that we need to be relevant in order to stay competitive in the marketplace.

When business owners and entrepreneurs are asked, “What do you want to be in your business?”, answers range from being liked, being loved, being important, being the best, being reliable, being ethical, being honest, the list is long. Being rich is often mentioned but is surprisingly down on the list.

What we really need to do to achieve our goals is be relevant; closely connected, and appropriate to the matter at hand. Focus on what matters most. Don’t try to be all things to all people.

Are you relevant? Is your business the right kind of business for the time, for the marketplace? Is your product or service of value to the rest of us. Can we identify with what you’re saying..with what you’re selling.

Being relevant is not about having the latest and greatest. Relevancy is what we are now, as a large collective (a cooperative enterprise.) such as a society and a small collective such as our circle of personal and business contacts. Offering the latest and greatest option may not be the right choice, when the group you are trying to reach and relate to is looking for a product or idea that is tried and and true, full of old fashioned value.

This is how we develop strong business relationships; relationships based on based on relevant feelings, real time opinions, and solid business practices. Ask yourself “Am I making sense, Am I giving and receiving benefit from what I’m saying and practicing?

By being mutually relevant, we can extend our trust to a higher level and a bigger collective, and fear less about unexpected changes in relationships and subsequently in our business dealings.

Geography plays a role in relevancy. What is of importance to one part of a nation may not be pertinent nor important to another part of the same country, much less from one country to the next. Relevance is considered based on needs, wants and desires of the populace at hand.

Do you want your business to prosper, and to stay prosperous during an up economy or a down economy?

Be real, be relevant, pay attention!

BNI: TRUST is the Key to Referrals

Being a successful businessperson today requires trust. It’s vital that your business partners, those whom you work with the most, (and the best sources for referrals for you) trust you so as to refer you when the opportunity arises.

Trust is built through relationships and relationships are built through trust. There is no magic formula for building trust, but there are ways to practice the art of networking to build your relationships and hence trust among your business partners. It’s hard work being an honest sincere networker, but the benefits are tremendous. Networking builds trust and with trust comes referrals but you have to be willing to promote others to have them appreciate you, trust you and refer you.

Remember giving a referral is to always put your reputation on the line when you recommend someone.

If the transaction from a referral you’ve given goes south those two may never do business again nor even speak to each other again, but you may hear about the bad experience, and perhaps damage a personal or business relationship you may have worked hard to build.

One business organization that practices referral business is Business Network International. With over 125, 000 members worldwide in over 5800 chapters in over 43 different countries, BNI is the fastest growing networking organization in the world. 6.2 million referrals in 2009 totaling 2.6 billion dollars U.S.

BNI’s motto is “Giver’s Gain”, which simply means if you give of your time, talent and energies, it will be returned to you. This process is done through BNI chapters in local communities. Each chapter meets once a week and is composed of like minded business people only allows one person per professional specialty. a potential member is screened before joining with an emphasis on ethical business practices and personal conduct.

Each member becomes an expert on every member’s business, essentially becoming part of there sales force. An average BNI chapter is @ 30 people. Who can afford a 30 man sales force?

Every week each member is allowed a 1 minute infomercial or training session in which a member can train their “sales force” on how to look for referrals for their business and what a good referral would be for them.

Meeting as a chapter once a week, and meeting with other chapter members throughout the week helps build relationships and trust which increase the likelihood of giving and receiving referrals.

Trust is the key, If they don’t trust you they won’t introduce you, or recommend you, or even think of you.
