BNI: The Five Fundamentals of Referrals

In my previous articles I've talked about the tremendous value of good business referrals and the sort of people you might team up with to increase your referral rate. Notice that we’re not talking about ‘leads’ here. Leads are simply names and contact details but a referral is much, much more. When Jack refers Jill to you, you know that Jill is looking for products or services like yours. What’s more, Jack has told Jill that he’s confident you’ll do a great job for her and – best of all – she’s looking forward to your call! In other words, a referral is warm and ready opportunity for new business. Magical things, these referrals...

So let’s look at the Five Fundamentals of Referrals – your gateway to better, more productive sales.

  1. Motivate through Givers Gain
Givers Gain simply means that if you help my business, then I’ll want to help yours. Maybe not today or even tomorrow, but in time, what comes around goes around. Givers Gain is the central tenet of Business Network International (BNI) and it’s the reason why BNI is the largest and most successful networking organisation in the world.

  2. Instil confidence
Confidence is vital in generating referrals. You must have confidence in what you are selling and the service you provide: if you don’t believe you can really help your customers, why should they? Good quality products that deliver clear benefits, good guarantees, keeping your promises, top quality after-service and even acting fairly and generously when something goes wrong (because everyone makes a mistake sometimes) will all go a long way to win your customers’ confidence and encourage them to recommend you to others.

  3. Educate who and how
You might know exactly who makes a great customer for you – but don’t expect others to know that unless you teach them. As you build your team of referral givers around you, it’s essential that you educate them about the kind of customers and business you really want – and those you don’t want, too.

  4. Stay disciplined
That’s it, really. Keep on track. Live Givers Gain and keep on building confidence and educating effectively. Don’t let standards slip.
If times get tough, stay disciplined.
If times are good, stay disciplined.

  5. Find the right referral partners
If you read my last article on finding good referral partners you’ll be ahead of the game here. But good referral partners aren’t always as obvious as you might think. Can a will writer be much us as a referral partner to a photocopier engineer? Well yes, actually. As you develop your networking and referral skills, you can look more creatively to build a terrific network of referral partners. It all comes down to getting to know and better understand what others do, how they do it and who they work, rest or play with. Well-structured one-to-one meetings are a great way of really getting to know and learn more about your network and an ideal basis for generating Givers Gain referrals. (Try visiting an excellent referral meeting such as BNI and you’ll see how this works in practice.)

So there you are: you’re ready to start out (or improve) on your referral success journey. Always remember though that there’s no end to the learning. Indeed, this article merely skims the surface of the huge and exciting subject of business referral, so be sure to find out more and enjoy learning all you can. I promise you that if you follow the rules, you’ll change your business (and probably your life) more than you can ever imagine.

BNI: Find the Right People – and They’ll Bring You More Business!

Many busy businesspeople make their lives even busier by believing that the best way to win new orders is to go out and find them. Guess what? It isn’t! Build the right team around you and they’ll boost your sales more than you could ever have imagined.

“Okay,” I hear you say, “but hiring sales teams costs the earth!” Well here’s the really good bit. You don’t need to hire anyone. If you have the confidence in yourself and the products or services you’re selling, you simply need to identify the right people and earn their trust. Add to that a positive, Givers Gain attitude (‘If I help you, then you’ll want to help me too’) and your future’s looking rosy.

So where exactly are the right people to be found? You might have heard of the term ‘Market Commonality’…

You have market commonality with other business people when you share similar types of clients. For example, a caterer, an events planner, a tailor, a florist and a bridal shop will all have clients who are planning a wedding. So you’re a photographer? Get to know those people. Are they good at what they do? Would you be prepared to refer them to your own clients? Teach them what you do and how well you do it. Build trust between the group and you’ll all:

• grow in confidence
• feel a lot less lonely
• ask for more referrals
• receive more referrals
• WIN MORE BUSINESS!

The possibilities here really are enormous. Think creatively and whatever your job, you’ll discover your market commonality with a host of other trades and professions – so get out there and find them! Winning business like this takes commitment and time, but it’s extremely effective: business won by referral is the best kind of business you can get.

BNI: Want More Business? Get Other People To Find It For You!

What’s the main purpose of your business? Making widgets? Mending cars? Filling jam doughnuts? I think not. The primary purpose of your business is making a profit. Otherwise, what’s the point? You can’t provide employment or train people or make the world a better place unless you make more money than you spend. So it’s a fundamental truth that business must be about winning more good clients and improving your profitability.

How do you achieve that? Well, another fundamental truth is that people who are recommended (or ‘referred’) to you, are more likely to use your products and services than those who come to you by chance. A good referral is great for everyone – it’s an all-round winner. The customer feels confident that they’ll get the product and/or service they really want, and the supplier adds a new name to his client base.

It also works the other way round, of course: if people lack confidence in you, they won’t signpost other people towards your business. Worse still, if you’ve given them reason to be upset (perhaps you didn’t get back to them when you said you would, or you provided poor service or shoddy goods) they might well tell others to stay away from your business, and you really don’t want that.

Or maybe you lack confidence in yourself or what you offer... and it shows. Confidence then, is a two-way process in business. By building your own confidence, you can build your prospects’ and clients’ confidence in you. If people have confidence in you, they’ll:
· buy from you
· pass your name on to other people.

Brilliant! So confidence can equal referrals. And provided you give them the respect they deserve and act on them promptly, referrals really are the best kind of business you can get. In fact, I’d suggest that referrals are critical to your future business success.

People I coach often say at this point, ‘Yeah, but… They offer all sorts of excuses (sorry, reasons!) such as:

‘Yeah but I don’t know enough people with the right contacts.’
Are you sure about that? If so, do something about it. It’s much easier than you
might think. Join a networking group and meet people. Whether you do that face-to-face or virtually; learn to listen and ask.

‘Yeah but I’m shy.’
Well one thing’s for certain: you’re in good company! Lots of people are shy, but you don’t need to allow that to stand in your way. If it’s a major barrier you can conquer it with the help of an expert, maybe a trainer or NLP counselor. Or perhaps you just need to meet with others who feel just like you do, go to any networking meeting and they’ll be there!

‘Yeah but they’ll think I’m rude to ask.’
Why? Be polite and be specific about what you’re asking for and most people will be happy to help.

Whatever the issue (and there are plenty more where those came from!) understand that every hurdle can be jumped, stepped, or even tipped over so you can move to greater success. Build your confidence and instill it in others, and they’ll want to help you take your business forward.
