How To Write a Great Blog Post | THE NET-TECH REPORT

Chris Kauza
The Net-Tech Report with Chris Kauza

This is a question that stumps many people as they try to manage the balancing act of getting great content out to their audience, and keeping their site frequently updated. They will put a blog on their website, they’ll make sure it looks great – and then they will get stumped when they try to figure out how to post some great content on it! Learning how to write a great blog post comes with practice and you will soon start to get a feel for the sort of content people like to read (trust me – we’ve ALL have some posts “out there” in the Internet that we secretly feel are pretty bad!), however here is some advice to get you started - and the best first step is to “just get started!” Here’s how…

A great blog post must contain the content people want in the style that your target audience wants to read it in. Sounds pretty straightforward (unless you’re the obsessive-compulsive type who worries whether or not it is written in the “right “ style, uses the “right” words, etc. – it’s really easy to over-think this stuff – don’t!). Your first job is to establish what the hot topics are in your niche. You might already have a pretty good idea of what people enjoy, but if not go and do a little research. Visit other blogs which are similar to yours and identify the popular posts which get loads of comments. Also look at the structure of posts, their tone of voice, style and the type of vocabulary they use.

Remember that people usually read a blog to be informed about a particular subject - but if you can help they actually ENJOY reading it, they will read all the way thro0guh, may comment at the end, and will probably come back for more! Often the best blog posts are totally random and are about something which happened to you in real life that in some way relates to your subject. “It’s relatable”, in some way. People love gossip and experiences (“reality TV”, anyone?). Let your personality shine through as much as you can. Make people feel like they ‘know’ you – post pictures, videos, spontaneous thoughts about life etc and over time you will develop your own style.

Here are some tips for writing blog posts:
  • The title of your post is important. Ideally it should intrigue the reader and make them want to read your post. You can do this by making a controversial statement or simply by asking a question or making a thought-provoking statement – depending on the type of post it is you are making.
  • Keep your paragraphs short as people are generally put off by huge chunks of text.
  • Use questions to engage the reader.
  • Add bullet points to highlight key information.
  • Add pictures and videos to keep people interested and to inject some personality into your blog post.
  • Encourage readers to comment and give you their own thoughts.

These sound simple enough – until you actually get in front of that keyboard and start pounding away at those keys. Don’t worry if it takes you some time – relax, be yourself & have fun.

…THAT really is the secret to getting a great blog post out there!
