UNIVERSAL GUIDE TO NETWORKING: "NOWHOUR" - A Clever Plate & Great Advice

Universal Guide to Networking with Terry Bean

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated with clever vanity plates. While "63 vet" is certainly descriptive, it is not necessarily clever. A clever plate is one that may take a moment to figure out or that you feel like you need to confirm your understanding of its meaning with someone else. Occasionally you will see a plate that no matter how hard you try, you just don’t get. Alternatively, you may see one and wonder why the hell they chose that...mine is such a plate.

NOWHOUR is more than a license plate to me, its just good networking advice. Networkers are quick to agree with the idea that "givers gain" as popularized by another TNNW writer and the "father of modern networking”, Dr. Ivan Misner. I believe there is a step before giving. Its knowing what you have to offer. Many would be networkers don’t understand all that they have to give, because they don’t recognize what they have to offer. To me, that’s a function of knowing who you are.

When you know who you are, you will know what you are capable of and what you are here to do. The awareness that you have about you and how you can assist those to whom you are connected is profound.

Interestingly, most people see the plate and understand it to be now hour. With all of the focus on how important "now" is, I suppose that makes sense. Doing things now is also a good plan when it comes to networking. So often, we end up putting our networking off until "later". Believe me, NOW is always the right time to network.

So why is this the post for January? Well there are a couple of reasons:

1. I think a great piece for February would be examining what we as networkers have to offer to our networks and I want to get your thoughts on that idea.

2. I think it’s time we get to know each other a little better. The fact that I have know who you are written in short hand on my car may resonate with a few of you and we can establish some common ground.

I am looking forward to connecting with you more in 2009. Here’s to our most successful year yet.

Be Connected-
