Conversations That Count with Rob Brown
My name is Rob Brown. I'm based in the UK and am the founder of the Global Networking Council. This is a high-level, invitation-only ‘mastermind’ group for thought leaders, authors, experts, facilitators and gurus on the topics of business networking, relationship building, trust, connecting and referrals.
Part of my role is to interview these top relationship thought leaders and share with you their insights and tips for building social, financial and relationship capital.
After the brilliant interview I did with the incredible Adam J. Kovitz last month, here's something just as good.
Lynne Waymon is based in Washington DC and heads up Contacts Count, a nationwide training and consulting firm specializing in business and professional negotiating and networking. She's a nationally known expert on networking and collaboration, career management, negotiating and influencing, and presentation skills.
Lynne is the co-author, with Anne Baber, of bestselling book Make Your Contacts Count. They also conceived The Networking Competency Assessment which is used by individuals or organizations to measure mastery of networking skills. There are now certified Contacts Count trainers all over the world!
In this outstanding 20 min interview, you'll discover:
- The biggest misconception about networking - it's about teaching and giving, NOT talking and taking
- Why all people in every role need to network - the skill that everyone needs to learn
- The three 'key moments' of networking
- How to strike a balance between being pushy and passive
- The six key stages of trust-building
- The power of 'listening generously'
- Why networking is your professional swiss army knife
- The importance of learning for ALL networkers
- How introverts can be outstanding networkers, and they networking skill set they excel at
- Why you have to be prepared to be spontaneous
- Tips for assessing your networking skills
- Great tips for a killer Elevator Pitch
What I especially love about Lynne's approach is how she guides you to teach your networking contacts about your character and competence. Once they are educated on these two key areas, you are more likely to turn them into advocates.
Listen to or download this interview and raise your game in this most critical of business skills.
When you do, listen carefully to what Lynne says about the Best Test. Focus on how you conversationally tell people about the time you saved the day, solved the problem or served the client!
