Beyond the Cubicle - Corporate Culture with Teri Aulph
Leadership, management, organizational culture and company values are all hot topics on the Top 40 Billboard of Workplace experts. A lot of time is spent defining, re-defining, comparing, contrasting and reconstructing all these best-selling hits. Where would these popular issues be without the employees?
The work world would be at a loss without the following:
The Resident One-Upper lies in wait for someone to tell a story or explain a situation so he/she can quickly one-up their co-worker with an even bigger version. This person is alive and well in EVERY workplace. We rely on him/her to perform on cue every time and provide us with a brief moment of eye rolling and knowing glances. Where would we be without him/her?
The Hollow Employee has no original thoughts. They ‘me, too’ every idea, even if differing opinions are voiced. They use other people’s words and phrases to enforce other people’s ideas. They are accepted as a part of the cast and nobody questions their behavior. This is the person you go to when you desperately need someone to agree with you. Where would we be without him/her?
The Caustic and, sometimes, Inappropriate Employee can be depended on to have a negative view on everything. They open their mouths and whatever they are thinking comes rolling out. They are void of the filter between their brain and their mouth. There is concern they erode morale. On the flip side, they often become the burning platform to bring everyone else together. More often than not, they voice things we all are thinking, but would never say out loud. Where would we be without him/her?
The Cheerleader loves every idea, every project, every boss and every co-worker. At some point in time, this person annoys everyone. He/she always has a smile on his/her face and often offers you bits of wisdom couched in cliché’s. During times when we feel things may be hopeless, this is the person that rises from the doom with a semblance of hope. Where would we be without him/her?
Regardless of where you live in the world, these employees accompany you and provide a constant you can rely upon. As you play your part in your workplace today, take a few minutes to be appreciative for those who provide us comfort, angst and humor.
