CEO SPACE: Composing Powerful Goals

Setting and accomplishing goals is not a simple one-step process of writing it down and the magic begins. No, this is a learning process and a growing process. It’s like working out. The more consistent you are with your exercise program, the stronger you get. Goal setting is the same. Be consistent and you will get stronger with this, as well.

The steps are straightforward:

  1. Write a specific statement of your goal
  2. Identify the “Baby Steps” or objectives that can be accomplished in increments
  3. Be committed to the goal - the reason for the goal must be a passion, not a desire
  4. Share the goal with someone who will hold you accountable
  5. Define the relationships needed to accomplish the goal
  6. Identify the obstacles or challenges
  7. Plan a celebration!
Schedule your objectives as action items in your calendar. Be careful not to over-commit. Schedule only what you can do in a reasonable time frame. Remember, there are other factors that must be considered in your schedule. If you over-commit, it will take your energy from what’s important – progress!

TIP: Schedule your actions on Friday for the next week. Review each day’s actions the night before. Revise the schedule as necessary.

Schedule Celebrations! It’s item #7 on the list, but it’s #1 in creating joy that will propel you forward! The reasons for the goal is the motivation, but the celebration will give you joy.

Review your day at the end of each day – take summary notes. Learn from what you did or did not accomplish and reframe your actions accordingly. Take someone into your confidence who will help you when you feel discouraged.

TIP: Share your goals with someone who can help you stay on track. The accountability factor for goal setting does work! Find a colleague who will help you by asking how it’s going and “How can I help you get back on track?”

Summary

By writing down your goals and objectives, you will have an action plan for success. You will have a clear picture of what you want to have happen and what its cost and benefits will be. You will know where you are going and how you will get there. Focus on exactly what you want and go for it – with conviction and determination, and you will succeed.

Begin by putting your name at the top of the goals worksheet. There is a realization that happens at that moment that is the beginning of success. You are the only one who can do this. You are the only one who can take responsibility. You are the one who will have great impact on your life and the lives of others.

Write down your goals. Goals that are not written down are only dreams. Write them down and move into action immediately.

Choose goals wisely. Goal achievement is one thing--what you become and what happens to you and your team in reaching that goal is another thing!

Take time to think! Take time to plan! Take time to study! Don’t confuse activity for achievement. Do not just say that you will succeed. Don’t wish that you could succeed. Don’t just expect the counsel of the successful. Act on the plan yourself.

Now, on to goal setting!
