BLUE THING #10: LINGOVATION OF THE WEEK. JA!
Dear Friends:
As you may or may not know, a Lingovation is a newly-created, freshly-coined word, often comprised of a hybrid or contraction of several existing words, which comes into being when no other single existing word or word combination (and sometimes not even an entire paragraph!) can precisely express the thought. They are not nonsensical terms, and must indeed be taken very seriously.
WHINERY – A lingovated noun used to describe a group meeting wherein the attendees complain and argue without either reaching a consensus or deciding upon any productive course of action. Many Boards of Trustees, Boards of Directors and other officially formed and formalized bodies (especially ones which are titled “Committees,” “Subcommittees,” or “Blue Ribbon Panels”) rapidly deteriorate to whinery status given either one or a combination of the following factors: 1) a failure of the air conditioning or ventilation system in the chamber where the meeting is being held; and /or 2) a lengthy encounter where no refreshments are being served; and/or 3) the subject matter involves accounting for a shortfall of proceeds or the allocation of extra proceeds in excess of those already budgeted.
