BEYOND THE CUBICLE – CORPORATE CULTURE: The Value of Authenticity

Beyond the Cubicle - Corporate Culture with Teri Aulph

Never in the history of man has more information been readily available for free. If you are out of a job or have a job you are trying to hold onto, there are a million suggestions at your fingertips.

Some advisors have deep expertise, some decided yesterday they would be experts, some are over zealous and some are doom and gloom. How do you know what is real and what has no substance when all are veiled in the truth?

We are all hoping for something new that we can believe in as we set our sails on the seas of our careers. I am fortunate to have over 10 years of good experience, solid credentials and have been in the right place at the right time to afford me some semblance of success…even though we all know the measure of success is relative.

All that being true, here is what I do know:

Be honest with yourself regarding your strengths and what you don’t do well. Maximize your strengths without overusing them and be careful to manage/minimize what you don’t do well. You will never make your weaknesses your strengths.

Believe in yourself. Yes, it’s a cliché’ and corny, but confidence in who you are – good, bad or indifferent – is your most attractive trait. Self-esteem without arrogance will draw people to you and allow you to learn from others. That is how we become stronger.

Avoid trying to be something you are not. One of the downfalls of having too many people telling us it is critical that we do too many different things in order to succeed is the risk of losing sight of who we are and what we want. We are all unique and bring different talents to the game. Be yourself. Being someone you are not is not sustainable and may come crashing down around you.

Choose your relationships carefully. The old adage, “Lie down with dogs and you wake up with fleas”, is true. The people with whom they spend time affect everyone. Why not leverage your relationships to your advantage? This means surrounding yourself in people who are credible, honest and have high integrity.

If you feel in need of advice, turn to a voice you trust. If people are nothing more than megaphones for other people’s information, avoid them. They may be filtering out the good stuff. Be smart and trust your instincts.

While this may appear simplistic, for those of you seeking a job, it is important that you find the job you want and one that is a good fit for your talents. If you are in a job and trying to move up, to sustain your success, you must know your strengths and believe in yourself.
