I'm a very proud Dad as I write this. Earlier today we went with our daughter to her school to get her GCSE results. GCSEs are the exams taken by 16 year olds in UK secondary schools. Success means another 2 years studying for A Levels to be able to get to University. Emily got excellent results and was one of the students mentioned in the local paper - 'Malmesbury celebrates best ever GCSEs'. The results were no accident. They were the result of setting goals, reviewing progress, re-setting targets and hard work.
More and more people in the UK are setting out to work for themselves for the first time. Many as a result of redundancy. The Liquidity Crisis of the Banks started three years ago. Over 2 million people have lost their jobs in the UK in that time. Some have been re-employed, but many have not. The number of people re-employed within 3 months has dropped from nearly half to just over a quarter.
I meet many such people new in business who seem to have forgotten that their educational and career successes came from applying themselves in the way the GCSE students above did. The most important thing for these people is building the right network for their new enterprise. They don't have the old Corporate Support Structures any more so they need to build a network to enable them to do what they do and to find business. Instead of doing this many waste time searching for the silver bullet to immediate success or endlessly developing their offerings.
I try and encourage these people to get proactive and concentrate on building the network they need. I have a simple equation for successful networking:
plan + structured approach = successful networking
First of all you need to know what you actually want and then you can do the things that will ensure you achieve your goals. At NRG-networks we encourage people to use the NRG Advocate Marketing System. The 5 simple steps include the essential components in this equation - your plan and a structured approach. Then just like the GCSE students it takes application and work:1. Set your networking objectives
2. Identify your target market
3. Develop your proposition
4. Define your inner network
5. Build your advocates
Until next time...
Good Networking!
