THE SLOGANATOR: You are Just Two Minutes and Two People from Your Next Referral

Rhonda L.Sher

A Simple Hello Can Propel You To Stardom

If you could choose the perfect place where you were most likely to meet your perfect client, where would it be? Obviously, to answer that question you have to know who your perfect client is, but assuming you do, where is he or she most likely to be?

Most of us know the traditional places and ways to meet people. We’ve joined the networking clubs, trade associations, church, community and civic groups. In fact, unless these groups are constantly recruiting new members, we may have exhausted the prospecting opportunities our affiliations provide. Nonetheless, we continue to participate in these groups because of what they do for the community and not necessarily what they can do for us. We also value the fellowship with other members and the personal relationships which occur as a result of that fellowship.

One of the newest methods of networking are the social media networks like Facebook and LinkedIn. These media giants provide great networking possibilities and entry into a global marketplace … a smorgasbord of opportunity. What makes these mediums so appetizing is that their universe of members is huge, and for the most part, membership is free. Yet, despite the massive opportunity these social networks provide, most people have yet to learn how to exploit those opportunities.

Both Facebook and LinkedIn have tens of millions of subscribers, a very appetizing entrée, but because of its size, they’re also networks that are easy to become lost in rather than linked in. Remember, to stand out from the crowd you have to be identifiable and different. Moreover, just like any other networking tool, to be successful you must be pro-active, which sadly most people aren’t.

Interestingly, one of the most common and yet seldom practiced methods of networking occurs in our everyday interaction with people. Surprisingly, gas stations, grocery stores, coffee shops, airports, etc. can be a rewarding and inexhaustible source of new business opportunity. How many times have you spent your time day dreaming while pumping gas or waiting in the check-out line? Statistically, we’re exposed to hundreds of people while just going about our daily activities, and each person we casually encounter yet fail to approach, represents a missed opportunity … perhaps the missed opportunity of a lifetime. What if you took two minutes to talk to that person next to you and asked for their card to follow-up? Perhaps that simple act could open doors you never imagined.

There are simple skills you can learn which will help you become a master of the casual encounter. Comments about something as simple as the logo on someone’s shirt can become the icebreaker that paves the way to prosperity, yet most of us let these wonderful opportunities pass us by. Check out Rhonda's Rules on You Tube to learn 12 simple rules that can take your networking to the next level.

Your networking activities should include a mix of traditional and contemporary communication techniques. Mastering “the art of the introduction,” can open doors which were previously unnoticed. Sometime a simple hello can propel you to stardom. Remember, your mother was wrong, you should talk to strangers and master the "f" word, follow-up. Then you will always be two minutes and two people away from your next referral.
