In today’s technological age, the way in which we network has changed dramatically. In the “old days,” networking was about personal contact. Relationships were built, ideas were birthed and business was built through personal experience, and as a result, it was easier to build that necessary bridge of trust and confidence that is at the core of all networking principles. Of course the difficulty, in the “old days” was that networking was more labor intensive than it is today.
That’s not to say that the old fashioned way of meeting people has disappeared, it’s just become a less frequently used way of meeting people. Nonetheless, it’s just as important today as it was in the past.
In today’s electronic age … networking is the purpose behind many internet businesses and all of the social media giants. Applications like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have become a super highway for personal and professional introduction, which is not to say that personal connections aren’t still important, they’ve just become a smaller part of our marketing mix.
Most every fortune 500 company has a presence on LinkedIn. In fact, more than 70 million subscribers use LinkedIn every day. Yet, despite this immense universe of prospects and the power of the engine behind it, most of us misunderstand how to use LinkedIn and as a result fail to exploit its potential.
A simple question we might ask ourselves is “how could even 1/10th of one percent of those 70 million prospects influence your bottom line?"
Regrettably, with the explosion of the internet, wi-fi applications, texting and growth of the social media providers, we’ve traded quality for quantity. We assume because creating our profile, requesting recommendations or searching potential prospects in cyberspace is easy, that it’s the preferred path to an introduction.
The problem is that anyone can promote themselves or exaggerate their experience or credentials while hiding behind the curtain of protection that comes with the creation of a great profile or website. So, In this week’s column I’m simply asking you, how can you differentiate yourself from everyone else? How can you create a personality behind your profile? In fact, a face behind your message or offer? Think about that for a moment, then I’ll give you the answer.
Video! Today, most every digital camera comes with a digital video recorder. More importantly, you can hire professionals to create a customized video message that is specifically tailored to you … easily and inexpensively. What used to cost thousands of dollars to produce is now affordable for everyone.
Your video message bridges the gap between technological contact and personal contact, and can lay down the foundation of reliability, credibility and trust which is essential in every relationship. Because your video message specifically talks to them, even though it’s directed to a universe that is 70 million strong!
In my next column, I’m going to show you how easily you can do this, and how dramatically posting video on your profile can impact your future business opportunities.
