Jerry Hickman and his 911 Locator System Win at INPEX
In June of 2009, Jack Markell, the Delaware Economic Development Department and the Delaware Workforce Investment Board hosted the 2009 Governor’s Entrepreneurial Business Conference, “Your Business 2009.” “This conference served as a ‘small business success road map’ to all attendees; a roadmap that clearly identified small business resources, support entities and their core competencies, and all who have a renewed pledge to offer support and assistance to Delaware’s small businesses both now and in the future,” said Ken Anderson, Director Entrepreneurial & Small Business Support of the Delaware Economic Development Office. At the conclusion of the conference the award for the Best Overall Business Plan was presented to Jerry Hickman of 911 Locator Systems. The 911 Locator Systems business was already generating revenues and even in this challenging economy, was well-positioned for growth.

How did Mr. Hickman come about inventing this award winning 911 Locator System?
“Whether it’s a fire, a burglary or a medical emergency, every second that the fire department, police or EMS crew spends locating your house is critical,” says Jerry Hickman, inventor of a simple locator system that’s easy to install and use. “Sometimes, just a few seconds can make the difference between life and death, minor damage and catastrophe.” In any event, every minute that the responders spend looking for a location, is a minute lost in delivering the help needed in an emergency.”
Hickman, President and CEO of 911 Locator Systems Inc., should know. As a young volunteer for a Fire/EMS service, following in the footsteps of his father, he quickly learned how difficult it can be to locate a house in the event of an emergency, especially at night. “I will never forget the night we got a call about someone suffering a heart attack,” he recalls. “We were out of the station within a minute, but then spent precious minutes driving back and forth looking for the house because it was too dark to see the address. When we finally found it, we were a few minutes too late. That night changed my life forever.”
After a long and successful career in the stage/concert lighting/electronics industry, during which he continued to volunteer as an EMT and firefighter, Hickman launched a second career as an EMT/firefighter and soon thereafter an EMS instructor. At the same time, combining his knowledge of electronics, lighting and emergency response, he invented the 911 Locator System™, which helps emergency crews locate their destination quickly and accurately.
How does the 911 Locator System work?
“It’s really a simple concept,” he says. “When you dial 911, it activates a high intensity strobe that alerts the emergency crew that this is their destination. The strobe can be on your mailbox or a yard post, if it is located at the end of your driveway, or a strobe light mounted directly to your house, or both if desired. Either way, they make it very easy for the responders to locate you.”

Once the emergency responders have arrived and taken control of the situation, the strobe light can be deactivated simply. “But activating the strobe light is not the only thing the 911 Locator System™ can do,” Hickman says. “By initially programming another number in memory, users can direct the system to activate from triggers such as 1-800-Medicalert or 1-800-MyAlarm, in addition to 911.
The 911 Locator System™ also functions as a security system. “Let’s say, for example, that you are home alone when you hear a noise in the front yard,” Hickman explains. “By dialing a different code, you can activate the strobe light to frighten away the intruder without alerting the emergency services.
Available shortly will be a “Next of Kin” feature, in which relatives or other persons can be alerted in the event of an emergency and called automatically with a pre-recorded message, as well as the integration of the system with temperature sensors. Basically, we can configure the system in whatever way best suits the homeowner’s needs.”
