The Entrepreneurial Guide to Entertainment with Sandy McKee
Most people (my creditors in particular) would be surprised to learn that I am, in fact, a gazillionaire. I run a successful interplanetary commodities business based in the galaxy kingdom of Kukubia. Here on Earth, I run a chocolate empire which produces $551,618,624 per week and has assets of $351,932,678,144. In the western part of the United States, I own a rustic, thriving town that throws off so much gold I had to build extra banks just to hold it all.
All of this is true. Unfortunately, it is not real. (sigh) It is a summary of a few of my accomplishments playing video games in the genre called “Tycoon.” I love this type of game because it teaches important financial management and business principles in a fun, entertaining manner. The general principle of “buy low, sell high, and invest the profits” seems to make more sense when it is advocated by a green alien with a high, squeaky voice.
Thus, when I saw that Facebook has a game entitled “Tycoons” I had to check it out. The teaser promised: "Build an empire and dominate your friends and enemies!” Since world domination is a hobby of mine, I decided to start playing the game and see where it would lead me. It’s early days yet, but I’ve managed to quintuple my net worth. I have a few supply/demand issues to iron out; but, I think I can get on track.
An interesting element of the game (and yet another life lesson) is that you can’t get far without the right business partners. My real friends and family are not interested in the game, so I have had to go on the Forum message boards to seek out like-minded strangers to work with. My goal is to have reliable partners in every time zone so the sun will never set on my empire.
“Tycoons” came along at just the right time. Facebook was beginning to get boring (my apologies to anyone who considers this heresy); and, I’m awaiting new releases of my other games. I needed a challenge and this complex, real-time strategy game fits the bill.
I’d be tempted to brag that it’s only a matter of time before I add another gazillion dollars to my net worth; however, the memory of two 8-year olds beating me at Robert Kiyosaki’s board game “The Cash Flow Game” still stings. I’ll approach this with cautious optimism.
For those who are interested in playing Tycoon games, I recommend these sites:
iWin – http://www.iwin.com – and be sure to visit their Hotel iWin, a virtual reality world where you can decorate hotel rooms using Opals you earn playing the games. The All Access program with unlimited game play is well worth the $9.99 per month price.
Lavamind – http://www.lavamind.com – producers of “Gazillionaire”, “Zapitalism”, and “Profitania”.
PlayFirst – http://www.playfirst.com – producers of the Chocolatier series.
SandLot – http://www.sandlotgames.com – producers of the Westward series. Ironside – http://www.ironsidegames.com – producers of “Tycoons” on Facebook.
Lest you think my mind contains only thoughts of greed, let me assure you that I have a healthy view of money. It is a tool…an essential tool, nothing more. Still, as Zig Ziglar once said, "Money's not the most important thing in life, but it ranks right up there near oxygen! If you don't believe it, try living without it for a while!" Amen, Zig.
