BLUE THING #5: Featured Company of the Week

KENOVA TECHNOLOGIES Partners with DSI, LLC to Develop a Unique Process of Assisting Start-Ups by First Helping Them to Move Into Revenue

James Naylor, co-founder and CEO of KENOVA Technologies, a custom software consulting firm that specializes in start-up projects and fledgling companies is taking another step to open new markets. With over 20 years of experience in the IT business (e.g., software development, operations, sales, support, training and strategic marketing), James and KENOVA have developed procedures and practices for the special needs of start-up businesses. KENOVA's methods are optimized for shorter lead times, early revenue, creative solutions, high quality, reduced cost and risk. The procedures used are based on the success of hundreds of projects. Procedures that have been proven to work.

Three years ago James attended his first CEO Space forum. As a software developer he had many approach him with potential projects. After just a couple of days he recognized that start-ups were often so early in the development of their businesses that they were far from being prepared for his existing services. He also recognized that they would need much assistance to get to that stage which included a firmer strategy to attract investors to their projects.

Having worked with so many start-ups before, he quickly began to organize a process to address these needs. His method began from the ground up, brain storming with the early stage entrepreneurs developing a strategy that was worthy of software assistance that could help them immediately by prioritizing what they wanted to accomplish, starting with those ideas that could generate revenue most quickly and then moving down their list.

When a start-up comes to James they don’t have a clue as to what it truly takes to develop the software programs that they need including the cost which can be $15,000 to $30,000 per month depending on the size of the software team necessary. The teams can often include a project manager, a program manager, one to two programmers, and a quality control engineer.

KENOVA Tech has teamed with DSI, LLC to develop a package which offers their services to the startups for a reduced cash expenditure on the front end in an exchange for company equity. This allows the early stage entrepreneur to move the business forward much more quickly. This also places KENOVA Tech in a position where it is to their benefit to move the early stage business into higher revenues as rapidly as possible. James understands that when the startup brings in partners that have “skin in the game”, a vested interest in the success of the company, this produces a great scenario for a win-win where all parties will work harder to advance to company’s revenue streams.

When a given circumstance arises where there is a need for change in the software to assist in increasing revenues other software companies will just say “Sorry, it is not in our existing contract.” For KENOVA, it is to their best interest to accommodate and make it happen. James will always work from the client’s perspective and then view it from the software developer’s point of view to see if it is plausible. He sees this as a successful mindset developed within CEO Space that has allowed him to develop greater empathy for the client. With a more cooperative/ collaborative environment all are more willing to put their best efforts into a project to make it as successful as possible. He views this as very unique to his industry. James has actually accepted this as his mission in life… to work with startups with an extraordinarily different business model from any of the other software developers… partnering and accepting early stage risk in start-up projects.

KENOVA Tech and DSI have teamed up to develop a free introductory webinar to assist start-ups in understanding two major elements necessary for their business success… issues a start-up faces in raising capital in general and the nuances involved in technology projects. On Thursday, September 16, 2010 from 4:00pm to 5:00pm EST KENOVA Tech and DSI will be offering this introductory webinar to business start-ups across the country.
