THE SLOGANATOR: Remember, It’s Passion That Propels Performance

Rhonda L.Sher
Great networkers possess an uncanny ability to recognize business opportunities. Whether it’s discipline, experience or talent, great networkers all share something in common. They seem to have a highly developed sense of timing of when their prospect is at their highest level of interest and at their weakest point of resistance. When these two important variables intersect ... the successful networker is in control.

A good networker knows that a great introduction doesn’t just create one emotional high, but rather many. And, in each and every case, every opportunity encountered should be viewed as an opportunity to sell oneself. The challenge lies in knowing how to do that without dominating the conversation. The greatest networkers know that success is built not by being interesting … but being interested.

Developing your networking ability lies in determining when your prospect’s resistance is overcome by their emotions. Successful networkers understand this principle. They know that to create interest they need emotion. To accomplish that, they need to stimulate a dialogue which invites and inspires their prospect to talk about themselves, revealing important fact about the challenges and opportunities they face. Remember, people who attend networking events are networkers themselves. So, just as you are interested in gaining their trust and confidence, they’re also interested in gaining yours.

Successful networkers also know that once a connection is made, the future of that connection is in the follow-up. Because networking professionals also know that interest becomes diminished over time. Not to mention that other business providers may also be in competition for the prospect. So respond quickly, by e-mail, letter, phone call and most importantly, personal contact.

Monetizing your network connections should be your first priority. After all, isn’t that why you invested your time in making the connection in the first place?

Surprisingly, the follow-up is the area where most networkers fail, because while they may be successful presenters, have an interesting product or service or a compelling story, they fail to follow-up quickly. Remember, unsuccessful follow-up is like a great football team that never scores. While they may have a great offense and defense, they’re incapable of crossing the goal line and no one wants to play for or with a team that never scores.

Your follow-up is your “touchdown.” It’s where your time, effort and energy are converted into business opportunity. It’s where prosperity is created. So, strike while the emotion is high. Keep your passion going … because it’s passion that propels performance!
