Business Network International CEO Ivan Misner

joins The National NetWorker as contributing writer

The National NetWorker, a free monthly online publication covering all aspects of networking in the U.S., has a new contributing writer: Ivan Misner, founder and CEO of Business Network International (BNI).

"We're absolutely thrilled to be able to offer Ivan's perceptive thinking to our readers," said Adam J. Kovitz, CEO and editor-in-chief of The National Networker. "He has inspired a lot of what we're doing, and it's an honor to have him on board."

Many times in my career I have been asked to join a Board of Trade. About ten years ago, I even attended one even—and was quite disappointed. My ideal customers were large corporations, and it seemed that the only attendees were real estate and insurance agents and tiny one-person companies. I didn’t bother perusing it further—a big mistake. Real estate and insurance agents are common in Boards of Trade, but as with an iceberg, only a tiny part shows on the surface.


Visit a town of any size and you’re likely to find a Young Professionals Group. YPGs have begun to spring up everywhere, and their popularity is growing. It just makes sense. Like-minded groups of individuals have always found ways to come together to make their voices heard and their talents known.

In many communities around North America there are examples of great business roundtables. We'll focus on three that are happening in the Greater Seattle area – for various business professionals and executives. Let's define the term first. A business roundtable is a way for same-level peers in various non-competing companies and organizations to share knowledge, ideas, and learn from each other. Typically there is a facilitator, and often meetings rotate from one member's company to the next.


Through my networking, I met a wonderful woman named Mary Kavanagh whose company, Pure Global Energy, is working on reducing wasted energy. She’s marketing a product—the Power Mender—that can save you up to 25 percent on your home and business electric bills. With several other people, we’re creating a network of electricians and other construction contractors who install the Power Mender.

I’m going to put interviewing of people in politics on hold for a month and talk about some of the unique ways that political people are networking and reaching out for votes. Some of this is happening now, and some will be happening in the near future.


Last month I described the first strategy—“live life purposefully”—in The Power is in the Connection, which I wrote with Jane George Surges. This month I’ll explore the second strategy. Strategy two: Develop a relationship mindset & Become a relationship-builder.
