While bankrupcy is in fact a means of pushing the reset button, it has gotten significantly more difficult due to recent changes in the US Bankrupcy law. These changes were made on the behalf of the large banks that issue credit cards to protect their ability to get repaid on their credit card debt.

Bankrupcy is intended for people who have gotten themselves into a bind due to situations beyond their control (significant health bills, prolonged unemployemnt, etc.)

And there are ramifications. A bankrupcy will stay on your record for 10 years. It will make it difficult for you to get credit and will increase your credit costs for many years to come.

When talking to a professional about bankrupcy, make sure you understand all of the ramifications of your actions. In other words, look before you leap.
