04/09/2007ITHACA, NY—A talk by Women’s Sports Foundation chief executive officer Donna Lopiano, a golf tournament and an awards ceremony will all be held as part of a weekend networking event organized by students in the Department of Sport Management and Media at Ithaca College. Lopiano’s presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Friday, April 20, at 4 p.m. in Textor 101.
Lopiano was recently named one of the “10 most powerful women in sports” by Fox Sports, while “The Sporting News” listed her as one of the “100 most influential people in sports.” As a student-athlete, Lopiano participated in 26 national championships in four sports and was a nine-time All-American in softball. She has been a college coach of men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s basketball, and softball and she served for 17 years as director of women’s athletics at the University of Texas.
The focus of the Women’s Sports Foundation is on empowering girls and women through mentorship, leadership and engagement not just in sport but in their communities as well. Ithaca College graduate Tuti Scott ’84, chief external affairs officer for the foundation, will join Lopiano to speak about strategic career planning for women aspiring to pursue careers in the sport industry.
The Sport Event and Networking Club (SENC)—an organization of students majoring in sport management and media in the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance—is sponsoring Lopiano’s talk as part of its Fourth Annual Hole-In-One Weekend. The program provides the students with opportunities to network with professionals as well as to gain firsthand experience in event management, sponsorship coordination, sport publications, sales, advertising and promotions.
A number of alumni and other professionals will be participating in the awards ceremony. Lopiano will be presented with the Distinguished Sports Industry Leader Award, while Scott will be honored with the Sports Industry Professionals Founder Award. Others being recognized include Michael Perman ’96, director of international programming for the NBA; Jon Rothstein ’04, anchor for 1050 ESPN Sports Radio in New York City; John Brunner ’01, assistant director of athletic game operations for the University of North Carolina; and Clive Russell, director of sponsorship, sales and broadcast rights for Major League Baseball in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and a faculty member at the Ithaca College London Center.
The golf tournament will be taking place on Saturday, April 21, at the Hillendale Golf Course on North Applegate Road in Ithaca. The tournament promotes a sense of camaraderie while also giving students a chance to network with successful graduates in the sport management and media field.
